Where Sacred Well Sits in Suzanne Sterling's Arc

Released on October 15, 2025, Sacred Well: Ritual Music from Reclaiming is a fifteen-track compilation, and that word matters. It is not a solo studio statement in the way a chant album like Kirtan: The Bhakti Yoga of Chanting Mantras is. It gathers music from the world of the International Reclaiming Community, with which Suzanne Sterling has worked for more than 25 years, co-creating public ritual and training teachers in earth-based spirituality.

Most listeners know Sterling through kirtan and bhakti, but this album shows the second strand of her work: the earth-based, ritual-circle side. It sits alongside Wyrd Vibrations: Future Sounds of Paganism from Reclaiming Tradition and Deep Repose: Meditation Music from Reclaiming and Friends as part of a community-built body of work. Her catalogue's most recent collected release, it reads less like a career peak than a record of the circles she has helped hold.

Sonic Character

I can't offer a track-by-track account of instrumentation, because the available record does not include one or a personnel list, and I won't guess at who plays what. What can be said comes from how Sterling's work is described. Her sound is built around the human voice, mantra and rhythm rather than dense orchestration. Pacing leans on repetition: a phrase returns, a melody settles, and the listener is invited to stay with it rather than wait for a climax.

Because this is a ritual compilation, expect the communal texture that defines her live practice. Voices are likely to feel conversational and shared rather than soloist-driven, with production in service of breath and chant. The mood to anticipate is grounded and ceremonial, closer to a gathering than a concert. Listeners wanting fast tempos or layered electronic arrangements will find this kind of material spare and slow-moving.

Tracks Worth Naming

Here I have to be candid: the information available to me doesn't include the album's track titles or descriptions, and naming songs I can't verify would do you a disservice. Rather than invent highlights, here is how to find your own.

Preview the album on Spotify before using any piece in a class or ceremony; the record itself advises this. Listen first for the opening piece, which sets the room's tone, and for any track where voices build from a single line into a group sound. Listen also for the shortest tracks, which tend to work as openings or closings in ritual. Sterling's recent singles Hole in the Stone, Open All the Doors and Songspell are separate releases, not part of this album, but they show her current song-forward writing and are useful context.

Place in Its Tradition

Sterling's work sits primarily within bhakti, the Indian devotional path in which song and repeated sacred names become a direct route to the divine. Sacred Well belongs to the other strand of her practice. Its tradition is Reclaiming-influenced, earth-based spirituality, a pagan and ritual frame in which music serves group ceremony. Her bio also lists shamanism and ceremonies among her subjects, so her lineage is better read as a set of practices than a single guru line, and no formal teacher succession should be assumed.

That makes the album different from ambient or meditation music. Its purpose is participation. It is devotional in spirit, communal in construction, and rooted in ritual use rather than background listening.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album lands hardest for people already comfortable with pagan and Reclaiming-influenced language: practitioners, circle-goers, ritual leaders and those curious about earth-based spirituality who want music built for the purpose. It also suits someone at a threshold, such as a season change, a loss, a beginning, or a need to feel held by other voices.

It is a weaker fit for listeners skeptical of devotional or ritual frames, since the spiritual language is central rather than decorative. It is also not the place to start if you are new to Sterling. For a first listen, Kirtan: The Bhakti Yoga of Chanting Mantras is the more direct entry. And if you want something purely secular or ambient, the Chill Yoga Music or Trip Tracks compilations are closer matches.

How to Listen

Choose an evening, and give it the whole sequence. Dim the lights, use headphones if you are alone, and let the repetition do its work rather than skipping ahead for something that peaks. Sterling's own practice asks for participation, so sing along under your breath, or hum, even if you don't consider yourself a singer.

If you have a ritual practice, play it as part of one: at the opening of a circle, at a seasonal marking, or as a closing. Preview the tracks first so you know which fit which moment. Afterward, notice what lingers. Since her work is built for community, the natural next step is to bring the album to a room of other people.
