About Vicki Richards

Vicki Richards has worked as a professional musician for more than four decades. Her roots and training span traditional North Indian raga, classical European music and electric fusion. She began playing professionally with an orchestra while also playing electric avant-garde fusion.

She started in her public school's instrumental program at the age of nine, encouraged by her musical father, and at fourteen knew that music was her calling. She later commissioned a custom-built solid-body electric violin. Her study of Hindustani music took her to Banaras, India, where she became a disciple of Pt. Amarnath Mishra and also studied with the violinist Dr. N. Rajam and with Pandit Sharda Sahai. Grants from the American Institute of Indian Studies and the Smithsonian Institution supported her time in India, and she later toured for the Festival of India.

That mix of raga discipline, Western classical training and improvisation shapes how she plays and teaches, and it is the reason to seek her out if you are drawn to Indian classical music or to a practice that listens as much as it moves.

FAQ

Vicki Richards draws on three strands: North Indian raga, classical European music and electric fusion. Her work is built around improvisation, so expect music that unfolds in the moment rather than a fixed set. The event is listed under the yoga genre, so the setting is likely meditative, though the organizer hasn't published a program.

She began studying Hindustani music in Banaras, India in 1979 as a disciple of Pt. Amarnath Mishra. That training is the foundation of her raga playing, and it is worth knowing about if you want to hear the tradition behind her improvisation.

She plays both worlds. Her background includes acoustic classical European training, and in 1976 she commissioned a custom-built solid-body electric violin. Which instrument she brings to Zen Village hasn't been announced, so check with the organizer if it matters to you.

No background is required, though a little familiarity with raga helps. Ragas are improvised melodic forms developed over time, so listening patiently to how a mood builds is the best preparation. Her fusion and Western classical side may also give you other ways into the music.
