Descrizione
Imagine your hands moving through dye baths infused with the essence of plants you've gathered yourself—yellows drawn from goldenrod, deep reds emerging from madder root, indigo shifting from green to blue as it meets oxygen and intention. This five-day immersive workshop at Esalen Institute invites you into a practice where creativity becomes medicine, where slowing down reveals the living colors hidden in the natural world, and where your own hands become a bridge between earth and art.
Led by natural dyer and creative guide Kristin Arzt, Wild Color is not simply a technical workshop—it's an invitation to restore balance through sensory engagement and mindful making. Set against the dramatic cliffs and gardens of Big Sur, you'll spend five days learning to wildcraft and forage across Esalen's legendary grounds, transforming whole plants into luminous dyes and applying them to fabric through resist techniques and surface design. Each morning begins in stillness with a grounding meditation, anchoring your creative work in presence and intention.
Whether you're a textile artist seeking deeper plant knowledge, a creative practitioner yearning to slow down, or a seeker looking to weave mindfulness into your hands' work, this workshop offers genuine transformation. You'll leave with hand-dyed textiles you've created, new technical skills rooted in traditional and contemporary methods, and simple daily practices to integrate creativity and connection into your life long after you return home.
What to Expect
Your week unfolds with intention and rhythm. Mornings begin with meditation to ground your awareness. You'll move into the gardens and surrounding land to forage and wildccraft plants for dye—learning to harvest respectfully, prepare baths, and understand the chemistry and soul of color. One focused session guides you through indigo dyeing and clay paste resist techniques; subsequent days explore the warm spectrum of yellows, oranges, and reds through different plant materials and methods.
Throughout, you'll engage resist techniques and surface design to create patterns and texture on natural fiber fabrics. The pace is slow and sensory—you'll listen to the plants, observe color shifts in real time, and notice how this practice quiets the mind and opens creative channels. By week's end, you'll have a collection of hand-dyed textiles that reflect both technique and your own creative voice, plus practices and knowledge to continue this work at home.
