Descrizione
Life's greatest passages often arrive unannounced—a relationship ends, a role dissolves, a new calling emerges. In these liminal spaces, we are tender, unmoored, and oddly alive. This weekend retreat, held at Esalen Institute in Big Sur during Halloween weekend, gathers those navigating significant life turning points to learn what facilitator Day Schildkret calls "threshold literacy"—the art of meeting life's passages not as disruptions but as initiations.
Suspended on the cliffs of Big Sur, surrounded by redwoods and the Pacific, you'll slow down to tend what is tender and mark the sacred ground beneath your feet. Rather than rushing through change, this retreat invites you to dwell in it: to cherish what has been lost and what remains, to inventory what is still alive and what has outlived its purpose, to remember what has shaped you, and to orient toward what matters most. The program weaves together nature-based ritual, altar-making, reflective writing, and collective witnessing into a structured, deeply supported experience of transformation.
Using Schildkret's Morning Altars practice, you'll forage for meaning in the natural world surrounding you—gathering stones, plants, and found objects to construct personal ritual altars. These altars become mirrors, anchors, and witnesses to your own passage. The container is both intimate and communal; you will be held by the group and the land itself as you move through this threshold.
What to Expect
Each day unfolds in rhythm with the natural world and the four-fold practice: honoring what has been; releasing what no longer serves; remembering your shaping story; and declaring what calls to you next. Mornings begin with altar-making in nature, afternoons with reflective writing and guided ritual work, and evenings with group witnessing circles where your experience is witnessed and held. Day Schildkret's gentle, grounded facilitation creates safety for the vulnerable work of initiation. You'll leave with a deepened capacity to metabolize change, concrete ritual tools you can return to again and again, and the knowing that your passage is sacred.
