Descrizione
Imagine stepping away from the constant pull of daily life and into a profound weekend of inner discovery—where an ancient Buddhist concentration practice, refined over 1,500 years, becomes your direct pathway to equanimity and clarity. Stages of Tranquility and Insight invites you to learn Asanga's Nine Stages of Staying, a classical meditation system known as the Elephant Path, taught this October 16–18 at the renowned Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California.
This is not a retreat about learning about meditation; it's an intensive training in a time-tested method that uses your own body as the primary anchor for attention. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone seeking deeper structure in your practice, this weekend distills centuries of Tibetan Buddhist wisdom into clear, practical instruction. By harnessing the nine progressive stages of concentration and receiving an introduction to foundational insight practices, you'll leave with a complete roadmap for establishing a sustainable meditation practice—and direct experience of the peace and mental clarity these teachings cultivate.
Set against the dramatic cliffs and redwood forests of Big Sur, Esalen's contemplative environment becomes part of your practice. Here, away from ordinary distractions, you'll discover how focused attention naturally reveals the nature of your own awakened mind.
What to Expect
The weekend begins with foundational instruction in how to work with the Elephant Path—a system designed to gradually stabilize attention and deepen concentration through nine clearly defined stages. Rather than chasing exotic experiences, this practice is grounded, methodical, and deeply effective. You'll learn how to use the body as your meditation object, receive detailed guidance on common obstacles and how to move through them, and be introduced to the basic stages of insight practice that complement concentration training.
Throughout the retreat, you'll alternate between guided instruction, group practice sessions, and individual meditation time, allowing teachings to integrate into lived experience. The atmosphere balances scholarly depth with genuine spiritual warmth—this is rigorous training offered with genuine care for your learning.
By the weekend's end, you'll have received complete instructions for maintaining a dedicated home practice, the confidence to navigate the early stages of concentration meditation, and a direct taste of the equanimity and mental spaciousness these teachings promise. No prior experience necessary.
