Descrizione
Step into a five-day immersion where plants aren't metaphors for healing—they're living teachers inviting you into reciprocal relationship. Held at the legendary Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, The Plants Who Know Us gathers seekers to restore an ancient kinship with six pan-culturally significant botanical allies: oak, nettle, mint, mugwort, elder, and rose. These plants have whispered their wisdom across continents and millennia, appearing again and again in the mythologies and healing traditions of diverse peoples. Modernity has largely severed this thread. This retreat invites you to reweave it.
Led by Fletcher Tucker, co-founder of Wildtender, and somatic practitioner Ariel Johnson, you'll move beyond intellectual knowledge into embodied kinship—learning to craft herbal medicines, natural pigments, fibers, and tools through reciprocity rather than extraction. Working directly in Big Sur's wildlands, you'll engage your senses, your hands, and your heart in ways that modern life rarely permits. Ceremony will illuminate the archetypal dimensions of these botanical teachers, grounding you in the felt experience of what it means to truly know a plant. Held on Esselen tribal land, this retreat honors the original stewards of this landscape and the deep relationship with plants that predates Western separation.
What to Expect
You'll arrive in Big Sur and immediately begin. Each day weaves together hands-on herbal medicine crafting, natural dye and fiber work, somatic practice, and ceremonial exploration. Mornings might find you harvesting nettles or rose petals in the coastal chaparral; afternoons, you'll be at the mortar grinding pigments or tending medicines with intention. Evening circles and ceremonies—led by Tucker and Johnson—open the mythological and archetypal dimensions of each plant, creating space to understand why these species show up across human cultures.
This is embodied learning. You'll leave with practical skills (herbal tinctures, natural dyes, fiber preparation) and something less tangible but more precious: a sensory-somatic relationship with plants that shifts how you move through the world. Expect to be challenged to think beyond extraction, to practice reciprocity, and to experience the aliveness of botanical kinship firsthand.
