Christmas Eve Celebration

The Christmas Eve Celebration is a gathering at Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, California, in the mindfulness tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, whom the community calls Thầy. It is an evening observance for anyone who wants to spend the holiday in a monastic community, whether or not they have practiced Buddhism before. The monastics of Deer Park host it.

What to Expect

The celebration is one of several seasonal observances the monastery keeps each year. Others include a Day of the Dead celebration, a Day of Gratitude at Thanksgiving, a New Year's Eve celebration, Vesak for the Buddha's birthday, and Lunar New Year ceremonies. Together they show how Deer Park marks the turning of the year: with practice, in community, and open to guests.

The monastery has not published a program for the evening, so no schedule is given here. Deer Park's gatherings are rooted in the practices of its tradition, such as sitting and walking meditation, chanting, and shared presence with the monastic and lay community. Its Days of Mindfulness, held most Sundays, run from morning into early afternoon. The Christmas Eve celebration is a separate event with its own arrangements.

Deer Park will not host a Holiday Retreat in 2026, which makes this celebration and the New Year's Eve gathering the monastery's marks of the season.

The Setting

Deer Park Monastery sits in Escondido, in northern San Diego County, Southern California. It is a practice center and a home for a monastic community, and it welcomes visitors during retreats and Days of Mindfulness. The monastery describes itself as a refuge, and it is currently inviting support to renew the grounds so they can serve future generations.

Deer Park offers both in-person and online events through the year, and its Southern California sangha, the local community of practitioners, gathers here for occasions like this one.

Before You Go

No prior meditation experience is stated as a requirement. A monastery has its own rhythm and etiquette, so it helps to arrive unhurried and ready to follow the lead of the monastics and the community around you.

Because schedules can change, check the monastery's calendar of events shortly before you travel for the current time, arrival guidance and any practical details. Donations are the monastery's main source of support, and offerings help keep it open to guests throughout the year.

For anyone searching for a Christmas Eve gathering that is quiet, communal and grounded in practice, this celebration at Deer Park Monastery offers a mindful way to spend the evening.
