Illuviation Dreamsketches: Perfectionism, Sketches, and Touch

Ludvig Cimbrelius
Ludvig Cimbrelius
Nov 17, 2018
6 min di lettura

Illuviation is a 2018 collection of songs and sketches by Ludvig Cimbrelius, released on November 13 of that year and gathered from roughly the previous ten years of work. The artist describes the pieces as "aural photographs," some more developed than others, each one capturing a glimpse of an emotional realm he has passed through. The record's subtitle, Dreamsketches, sets the terms: these are not finished monuments but traces of states of mind, kept as they were. Behind the music sits a small, very human note. In the release notes, the artist recalls writing a line to help himself out of perfectionism, and then placing it beside his bed: "I don't want to be flawless, I just want to touch people." The record grows out of that sentence.

Where does the idea of an "aural photograph" come from?

A photograph does not reconstruct a scene. It freezes one moment, with its light and its accidents, and leaves the rest out. Cimbrelius borrows that logic for sound. In the release notes he calls these pieces "aural photographs (some more developed than others), capturing glimpses of emotional realms traveled." The parenthetical matters. It admits that some of the material is closer to a rough print than a gallery piece, and it refuses to pretend otherwise.

That refusal is the spine of the whole project. Most recorded music arrives with an implied promise that everything has been resolved: the tempo is locked, the take is the best take, the mix has been argued over until it stopped moving. An aural photograph makes a different promise. It says this is what the feeling sounded like at the moment I caught it, and that is enough to share. For a listener, that shifts the job. You are not auditing the production. You are looking at a series of frames and asking what they show about the person who made them.

Why do sketches matter more than finished work?

There is a long tradition in painting and drawing of valuing the sketch above the completed canvas. The sketch shows the hand moving before the artist has begun to second-guess it. Music has its equivalents: the demo that sounds more alive than the album version, the voice memo recorded on a phone that catches a melody before it was polished into something defensible. Illuviation puts that impulse at the center. Its title word, which points to the layering and deposit of sediment over time, suggests accumulation rather than a single decisive act. Ten years of material is not a body of work built to a plan. It is what remained after a decade of making things and not stopping.

The title itself deserves a moment. The word "illuviation" is a term from soil science, describing the process by which fine material washes down through the layers of ground and settles into a lower horizon. Whether or not that was the artist's intent, the image fits the record's method: things carried downward over years and deposited into a shape you can only see in retrospect. Treat the reference as an invitation rather than a key. The release notes do not explain it, and nothing in the description tells us how the artist arrived at the word.

What does perfectionism do to a creative life?

The release notes name the problem directly. The line about flawlessness was written "to help me get out of perfectionism." That is a plain admission, and it is more useful than most artist statements, which tend to speak of vision and mastery. Perfectionism in creative work usually does not look like laziness. It looks like never finishing, never releasing, or releasing only what has been sanded so far that nothing of the maker's voice remains. It can also hide inside endless revision, where each new version feels like a fresh excuse to delay.

Cimbrelius's counter-statement is modest and specific. He does not claim that imperfect work is better in some abstract sense. He says he wants to touch people, and he treats flawlessness as beside that point. The shift is from a standard of execution to a standard of contact. Did the thing reach someone? That question is easier to answer honestly than whether it is perfect, and it leaves room for the rough edges that make a sketch recognizable as human.

What is the note by the bed teaching us?

Small reminders are an old practice. Writers have pinned quotations above their desks, and musicians have taped lyrics or setlists to amps and monitors. What makes this one notable is its candor. The artist writes that the note is a thing he should read more often. The release notes end there, with a line that is almost a confession: "I should read them more often." It reads as an ongoing practice rather than a solved problem.

That honesty is worth borrowing. The sentence on the note is not a slogan about success. It is a working instruction, the kind a person writes for themselves on a bad week and rereads when the old pull toward polish returns. For anyone who makes things, the lesson is less about this specific record than about the habit of keeping a tether to the reason you started. Touching people is a goal you can measure in a single listener. Flawlessness is a goal that keeps moving.

How should a listener approach Illuviation?

Go in expecting frames rather than a finished narrative. Listen to individual pieces as glimpses, and let the uneven development between them be part of the experience. The release describes emotional realms traveled, which suggests a journey, but the order and the texture of each piece carry that journey, not a plot. The record runs roughly across a decade, so it also rewards a second listen once you know the arc of the notes around it.

The record's own words set the bar. It does not ask to be judged as a perfect object. It asks to be received as a set of photographs from someone who wanted, above all, to reach another person. That is a modest ambition, and it is also one that many more polished records never quite manage.

Where to go from here

If the idea of an unfinished but honest record appeals to you, spend time with the release notes on the artist's Bandcamp page, where the full statement about aural photographs and the bedside note appears in the artist's own words. From there, listen to Illuviation as a sequence of snapshots rather than a single argument. If you make things yourself, consider writing your own version of the sentence the artist kept by his bed, something short enough to read on a bad day, and test it against the work you are doing now.

Illuviation is a 2018 collection of songs and sketches gathered from roughly the previous decade, released November 13, 2018. The artist describes the pieces as aural photographs that capture glimpses of emotional realms he has traveled through. Its subtitle, Dreamsketches, signals that the work is meant as traces rather than finished statements.
The artist uses the phrase to describe recordings that freeze a moment of feeling, much as a photograph freezes a scene. He notes that some pieces are more developed than others, which admits that the material ranges from rough sketches to fuller pieces. The idea asks listeners to receive the work as glimpses rather than polished objects.
According to the release notes, he wrote the line to help himself get out of perfectionism. He kept it on a note beside his bed as a reminder. The sentence shifts the goal from flawless execution to making genuine contact with a listener.
It is both in the sense the artist intends: a collection of songs and sketches from the past decade, with the subtitle Dreamsketches emphasizing the unfinished quality. The release notes say some pieces are more developed than others, so listeners should expect variation in finish. The record is presented as a set of snapshots, not a single resolved statement.
The release notes suggest that meaning comes from contact rather than polish. If a piece reaches one person honestly, it has done its job, even if it carries rough edges. This is the reasoning behind valuing sketches and unfinished recordings alongside finished work.
Illuviation is a term from soil science describing fine material washed downward through layers of ground and deposited in a lower horizon. The release notes do not explain the title, so this connection is an interpretive reading rather than the artist's stated intent. It fits the record's theme of accumulated material gathered over years.
