Kirtan at the Crossroads ofBhakti and Buddhist Practice

Krishna Das stands at the center of the stage, band arrayed around him—Genevie Walker holding down the left side, David Nictton powering the rhythm from behind, Mark Gorman and Arjent anchoring the sound. The setup is simple, the stakes enormous. What begins as a casual soundcheck—"Did everybody hear okay? Anything in the talking that was going on?"—is really a tuning of something deeper: the collective nervous system about to enter sacred space together.

This 2026 Summer Mountain Virtual Retreat carries a deliberate theme: "Where Love Meets Awareness at the Intersection of Bhakti & Buddhism." That collision point is not accidental. For decades, Krishna Das has occupied precisely that nexus, using the ancient devotional form of kirtan—call-and-response chanting rooted in Hindu and yogic tradition—as a vehicle for the kind of direct, non-dual awareness that sits at the heart of Buddhist practice. A two-hour kirtan session streamed live during the opening night of the retreat reveals how completely he has synthesized these lineages into something that belongs to neither and both.

The Invocation: Why Prayer Comes First

Before the band struck a single chord, Krishna Das paused to offer what he called "a short prayer"—an invocation of the love that lives within each person. "It's who we truly are," he said. That framing sets the entire event's spiritual compass. Prayer in this context is not petition or beseeching. It is remembrance. In the kirtan tradition, the opening moment establishes what Sufi teachers call niyyah—intention—but here the intention is not to ask for something external. It is to awaken to what is already present.

The mantra form that followed—structured call-and-response, repetition designed to bypass the thinking mind—belongs to a lineage stretching back centuries through India's devotional saints. Yet the underlying psychology aligns perfectly with Buddhist meditation technique: both use focused attention and rhythmic return to the present moment as the primary instrument of transformation. Where bhakti emphasizes love and surrender to the divine beloved, Buddhist practice emphasizes clear seeing and the dissolution of the separate self. In Krishna Das's hands, these become two paths up the same mountain.

The Band as Sangha: Community as the Container

The introduction of each musician—Genevie Walker, David Nictton, Mark Gorman, Arjent—was far more than logistical courtesy. It was a deliberate naming of the sangha, the spiritual community, as the actual foundation of what was about to unfold. Krishna Das's comment about Genevie Walker—"I've known her for 30 years and I don't know who she is"—carries the kind of paradox that points toward non-dual recognition. Long association does not necessarily bring conceptual knowledge of another person. Yet in the act of singing together, in the surrender required to follow and support a shared sound, something deeper than biography becomes known.

This is crucial to the bhakti-Buddhist synthesis Krishna Das practices. The group singing—the collective voice—is not a backdrop to individual spiritual experience. It is the primary teaching tool. When dozens or hundreds of people lock into the same mantra, the same rhythm, the same breath, the illusion of separateness begins to dissolve experientially, not theoretically. A Buddhist meditator might arrive at the insight that self is empty and constructed through sustained individual practice. A kirtan circle arrives at the same understanding through collective resonance.

Mantra as Both Devotion and Meditation

The bulk of the session consisted of extended chanting—mantras held over many minutes, sometimes building in intensity, sometimes deepening into whisper-soft repetition. The audio transcript captures fragments: "I'm a Christian," "Heat heat," "Oh my god," repeated over and over, layered with melody, punctuated by instrumental breaks and moments of silence.

This may sound incomprehensible to someone unfamiliar with kirtan, even mystifying. Why repeat "Heat heat"? What is gained by singing "I'm a Christian" 50 times in succession? The answer lies in understanding how mantra functions both as devotional technology and meditative tool. In the bhakti frame, repetition of the divine name or quality (heat, or warmth, or love, or consciousness) is a way of keeping the mind anchored in remembrance of the sacred. The repetition does not bore the mind into submission; rather, each iteration peels away one layer of habitual thought, opening new dimensions of meaning. "I'm a Christian" can be heard as personal identity claim, or as the recognition that in consciousness itself, separation dissolves into unity—the Christ principle of universal love.

From the Buddhist angle, the same practice is rigorous phenomenological investigation. As the mantra repeats, the meditator observes: What happens to my sense of self? To my breathing? To the boundary between my voice and the others' voices? Where is the "I" that is supposedly singing? This is direct meditation on emptiness and interdependence, with none of the austerity often associated with silent Buddhist practice. The heart opens while awareness clarifies.

The Switchback: Introducing Buddhist Mantra

Midway through the session, Krishna Das introduced a shift. "We're going to do some new recording in September," he said, "and this is a mantra from the Buddhist tradition." He then offered the full mantra: "Om Ah Vajuru Pad Siddhi Hum." He explained it was long—"only 5,000 words"—which the group would condense. Then he said the whole thing and invited the circle to join him in singing a portion.

This moment is a microcosm of the retreat's stated theme. The mantra belongs to Tibetan Buddhist practice, likely related to guru yoga or the invocation of enlightened qualities. Yet it was offered without doctrinal preamble, not as "Buddhism" in the sectarian sense, but as a phonetic technology for awakening. The 5,000-word reference (likely to a longer liturgical text) was mentioned and then dismissed—we condense, we take what serves. This is characteristic of how Krishna Das works: he honors the traditional forms while remaining pragmatically focused on direct experience.

The Alchemy of Sustained Chanting

What the transcript cannot fully convey is the texture of sustained chanting—how the sound itself becomes a kind of entity that holds and moves the collective mind. Descriptions from the session include moments of great intensity ("Heat heat heat!" repeated with building urgency) followed by gentle, almost whispered passages. This dynamic range is not random. It mirrors the arc of deep meditation: activation and stirring of energy, then settling and deepening, then another wave of movement.

The response captured in the transcript—cheering and applause after extended sequences—indicates participants understood the profound work occurring. Kirtan circles often generate their own momentum, a kind of collective trance state in which the boundaries between individual and group, singer and song, heart and breath, begin to soften. For a Buddhist practitioner, this is not escape into bliss, but a vivid demonstration of interdependence. For a devotee, it is love made audible.

Where to Go From Here

The 2026 Summer Mountain Virtual Retreat continued over several days with additional teachers and practices. But the opening kirtan session sets the key: love and awareness are not opponents. The heat of bhakti devotion and the clarity of Buddhist investigation are not contradictory paths. Sung together, in community, they reveal a single truth—that consciousness itself is both infinitely loving and completely awake. Krishna Das has spent decades developing the bridge between these worlds, and this kirtan demonstrates the bridge already built, already walking, already singing.

Kirtan is a form of call-and-response chanting rooted in Hindu and yogic devotional tradition. Unlike silent meditation, it uses collective singing of mantras as the primary tool for awakening. The repetition and group resonance create a shared experience that can dissolve the sense of separation experientially, while still training the mind in focused attention just as meditation does.
Bhakti emphasizes love, devotion, and surrender to the divine, while Buddhist practice emphasizes clear seeing and the dissolution of the separate self. Though they approach differently, both aim at transcendence. Krishna Das demonstrates they are complementary paths: the heart opens through devotion while awareness clarifies through investigation of emptiness and interdependence.
A mantra is a phonetic technology—a word or phrase whose sound and meaning anchor attention in the present moment and higher states of consciousness. Repetition is not monotonous; each iteration peels away layers of habitual thought, opening new dimensions of meaning while naturally deepening meditative states and devotional opening.
Kirtan is designed for all levels. There is no special knowledge or preparation needed—you simply arrive, listen, and join the singing when moved to do so. The collective resonance itself is the teaching; your nervous system learns through participation in the group field.
Extended chanting creates waves of intensity and softness, similar to deep meditation. Participants often report a dissolving of individual boundaries, a sense of being held by the group sound, and an opening of the heart alongside clarity of mind. It is both activating and deeply settling.
The theme acknowledges that these two major spiritual traditions—one rooted in love and devotion, the other in wisdom and insight—are not separate. Modern teachers like Krishna Das have synthesized them, showing that awakening requires both the warmth of the heart and the clarity of awareness working together.
