Kirtan at London's Eventim Apollo: A Night of Shared Song

Da Radhika Das

A kirtan concert is a room full of people singing the same sacred words back and forth until the distinction between performer and listener begins to dissolve. That is the idea at the center of a short clip from the teacher and kirtan artist Radhika Das, posted after what she described as one of London's biggest kirtan concerts, held at the Eventim Apollo. The video runs only 26 seconds. It opens on the words "Take it away" over music, and its real content lives in the caption, where she thanks the audience for "showing up, singing your hearts out and making a little bit of history with us."

What does a kirtan night at a venue this size actually mean?

Kirtan is devotional call-and-response chanting, most often rooted in the bhakti traditions of India, in which a leader sings a line and the gathering answers it. The form has no stage-and-audience division at its core. The leader's voice carries the melody, the room carries the repetition, and the repetition is the practice: the same names and phrases sung again and again until the mind slows and attention settles into the sound.

That is why the scale of this night is worth noticing. The Eventim Apollo is a large London performance hall, and filling it with people who sing rather than spectate turns an intimate devotional form into a collective event. Her description calls the evening "a little bit of history," and the phrase is telling. Kirtan has moved for decades from temples, living rooms and small gatherings into concert halls, and each full house is a test of whether the practice survives the move. In this case, by her account, it did: the audience sang, and sang loudly enough that she felt the need to say so.

The clip itself is brief, and it would be a mistake to read more into it than the material supports. It does not show the music, the setlist, or any teaching. What it offers is a moment of gratitude from a teacher to the people who sang with her, and a reminder that in kirtan the audience is not a passive part of the performance. Their voices are the performance.

Where to go from here

For the fuller picture of Radhika Das's approach to chanting, devotion and the practice of kirtan, her YouTube channel holds longer teachings and performance material beyond this short clip. Watching a full kirtan, rather than a 26-second moment, is the best way to hear how the call and the response build over time.

Kirtan is devotional call-and-response chanting, rooted in bhakti traditions of India, in which a leader sings lines and the gathering sings them back. Its power comes from repetition, which is meant to quiet the mind and draw attention into the sound. This context is general background rather than something the clip itself explains.
According to the video's description, the concert took place at the Eventim Apollo in London, which the description calls one of the city's biggest kirtan concerts. Radhika Das thanked the audience for singing along and making what she called a little bit of history.
In kirtan, the crowd is part of the practice rather than a spectator to it, since the call-and-response structure depends on everyone singing. Radhika Das's thanks to the audience for singing their hearts out reflects that participatory core.
