[0:17] Please stand for our service.
[0:23] Please close your eyes
and feel God's loving presence
[0:27] within us and all around us.
[0:31] Please pray with me,
Heavenly Father,
[0:34] Mother,
[0:36] Friend,
[0:37] Beloved God,
[0:39] Jesus Christ,
[0:41] Bhagavan Krishna,
[0:44] Mahavatar Babaji,
[0:47] Lahiri Mahasaya,
[0:50] Swami Sri Yukteswar,
[0:53] our guru,
[0:56] Paramahansa Yogananda,
[0:59] saints of all religions,
[1:02] we bow to you all.
[1:05] O Beloved God,
[1:08] I am a bubble of light
[1:12] floating in the ocean
[1:16] of your infinite consciousness.
[1:19] O Beloved God,
[1:22] I want to expand my heart
[1:26] that I may feel and know
[1:30] my true home is omnipresence.
[1:35] Aum.
[1:37] Peace.
[1:39] Amen.
[1:41] Please be seated.
[1:44] Good morning everyone.
[1:46] Thank you for joining us.
[1:48] I hope your summer is going well.
[1:52] One of the stories,
our favorite stories
[1:54] from the life of Paramahansa Yogananda
here at Lake Shrine
[1:58] is that he used to enjoy
swimming in the lake.
[2:03] And so he enjoyed the spring-fed
freshwater lake and he would go swimming.
[2:08] And the disciples said
that on one occasion at least,
[2:12] he finished his swim and he rolled over
onto his back and just floated.
[2:19] And he floated there
for the longest time.
[2:22] And then when he came in, he told everybody
he had a vision of Divine Mother,
[2:27] and Divine Mother blessed him.
[2:29] And he said, “Divine Mother blessed
Lake Shrine for the years to come.”
[2:34] So that's a beautiful image,
isn't it,
[2:37] of Paramahansa Yogananda
just floating in the lake?
[2:41] And sometimes when I'm taking
a walk around the lake on the pathway,
[2:46] I'll stop,
and I'll stop at a nice view.
[2:49] I'll put my hands on the railing
and I'll look out across the water
[2:53] and I'll just visualize
my Guru floating in the lake;
[2:59] and then I'll feel like
I'm floating there with him.
[3:03] And I close my eyes and I just float
in the lake with the Guru.
[3:07] It's a beautiful feeling.
[3:11] I'm just floating.
[3:12] So our conversation
today is about floating —
[3:18] learning to float in the, you know,
dynamic tides and currents of daily life.
[3:25] There is value here.
[3:27] So let us have a meditation
together and let's float.
[3:36] We can float in meditation;
it's a beautiful sensation
[3:41] when we relax all of our muscles
[3:45] and we enter into a state of relaxed
stillness, first within the body
[3:51] and then a deep, profound quietness
within the heart and mind.
[3:57] So we will be guided into meditation
after this chant,
[4:02] “I am the Bubble,
Make Me the Sea.”
[4:06] Page sixteen in the
little blue chant booklet.
[4:18] So do Thou, my Lord:
[4:24] So do Thou, my Lord:
[4:30] Thou and I, never apart.
[4:36] Thou and I, never apart.
[4:42] Wave of the sea,
dissolve in the sea!
[4:48] Wave of the sea,
dissolve in the sea!
[4:54] I am the bubble, make me the sea,
[5:00] I am the bubble, make me the sea,
[5:06] Make me the sea,
oh, make me the sea!
[5:12] Make me the sea,
oh, make me the sea!
[5:18] I am the bubble,
make me the sea.
[5:23] Oh, I am the bubble,
make me the sea.
[5:30] So do Thou, my Lord:
[5:36] So do Thou, my Lord:
[5:42] Thou and I, never apart.
[5:48] Thou and I, never apart.
[5:54] Wave of the sea,
dissolve in the sea!
[6:00] Wave of the sea,
dissolve in the sea!
[6:06] Oh, I am the bubble,
make me the sea,
[6:12] I am the bubble,
make me the sea,
[6:18] Make me the sea,
oh, make me the sea!
[6:24] Make me the sea,
oh, make me the sea!
[6:30] I am the bubble,
make me the sea,
[6:36] I am the bubble,
make me the sea,
[6:42] Make me the sea!,
oh, make me the sea!
[6:49] Make me the sea,
oh, make me the sea!
[8:01] Sitting straight and relaxed,
[8:07] your eyes closed
and lifted toward the
[8:11] point between your eyebrows,
the spiritual eye,
[8:21] and draw a slow,
gentle inhaling breath.
[8:26] Tense your body gently all over.
[8:30] Exhale and relax.
[8:36] One more time, inhaling deeply,
tense the body all over.
[8:44] Exhale.
[8:48] Feel the body deeply relax.
[8:51] Now with relaxation,
[8:55] deeply inhale the breath.
[9:02] Exhale; completely release.
[9:06] One more time;
[9:12] exhale.
[9:17] Now remain relaxed
and motionless.
[9:23] Keep your body relaxed
and don't move.
[9:29] The eyes are lifted
toward heaven.
[9:35] Feel the body
relaxing into stillness.
[10:00] Become aware
the thoughts are quiet;
[10:04] your emotions are at rest.
[10:21] Keep the body
relaxed and motionless,
[10:25] the mind free
of all background thoughts.
[10:39] Draw a slow,
gentle inhaling breath.
[10:46] Exhale and feel.
[10:56] Now feel that you're
a bubble of light
[11:01] floating on the
ocean of consciousness.
[11:09] Deeply enjoy
the relaxed stillness
[11:15] in body, heart and mind.
[12:05] Now feel vibrations of peace —
[12:10] peaceful contentment
and well-being
[12:16] flowing from
the stillness within.
[12:48] Feel yourself
as a bubble of light,
[12:53] free of all worries and concern,
[13:00] floating on a sea
[13:03] of infinite consciousness.
[13:28] Draw a slow,
gentle, inhaling breath.
[13:35] Exhale and feel.
[13:56] The quiet contentment
you feel now
[14:01] is the native state of your soul.
[14:06] It is always with you.
[14:13] We dive into it in meditation,
[14:19] and we draw our happiness
[14:23] from deep inside ourselves.
[14:47] Out of formless cosmic spirit
there flows a great song,
[14:52] ‘Music of the Spheres,’
the Aum, the Amen, the Amin,
[14:57] known as the Word of God
in all religions.
[15:02] We can feel this
great Aum vibration
[15:05] flowing all around us
and through us
[15:09] as we chant Aum together.
[15:18] Aum,
[15:24] Aum,
[15:30] Aum,
[15:36] Aum,
[15:41] Aum,
[15:47] Aum,
[15:53] Aum,
[15:59] Aum,
[16:05] Aum.
[16:37] Our guru,
Paramahansa Yogananda, greatly
[16:40] loved and appreciated
the beauty of nature.
[16:44] But he appreciated even more —
[16:46] He saw behind the beauty of nature
and felt the presence of God there.
[16:52] And he encourages us all
to do the same.
[16:54] He says there's more beauty
than we can even imagine.
[16:59] He gave a presentation
in Encinitas
[17:02] where he has a beautiful garden there
on the cliff overlooking the Pacific.
[17:06] And he told everyone
that morning,
[17:10] He said: “The flowers
outside are so beautiful,
[17:13] but behind them is
a garden still more lovely.
[17:17] Though it is very subtle
and hard to discern in the beginning,
[17:22] if you can penetrate to the inner realm
through the door of the spiritual eye,
[17:26] you will discover it.
[17:28] I live in that garden —
a region of exquisite qualities,
[17:33] of tender thoughts more sweet
and fragrant than any flower.
[17:37] There the bee of my mind is continuously
drinking the honey of God's presence.”
[17:44] Isn't that beautiful?
[17:46] We can discover the same
at the Lake Shrine.
[17:50] Gardens are beautiful right now.
[17:52] And as you walk around the gardens,
you can think,
[17:56] ‘You know, Divine Mother,
Lord, you are there.
[17:59] You are the light
behind the color.
[18:01] You are the life behind the, you know, the
growth and the liveliness of the plants.
[18:06] You are in the air;
You are in my heart.’
[18:10] Throughout His teachings, our Guru
encourages us to take quiet moments
[18:15] throughout our day, throughout our week,
to reflect in this way.
[18:19] He calls it
“cultivating inner spirituality.”
[18:23] Inner “spiritual culture”
is the phrase that he uses.
[18:27] And this is something
that if we are mindful,
[18:30] if we are intentional
about the way we are living our life,
[18:34] we can deeply enrichen
our experience.
[18:40] I once talked briefly with one of
our Guru’s first-generation disciples,
[18:44] a very dynamic woman,
Sailasuta Mata,
[18:49] and she spent years of her discipleship
in the ashram as a monastic.
[18:55] And we used to walk.
[18:57] Sailasuta Mata used to walk in
the gardens and at Mother Center.
[19:02] And I also used to walk
in the evenings.
[19:04] And we would pass each other silently
and quietly and give a ‘pronam’ and smile.
[19:11] And then one evening, we were walking,
and our paths crossed, and she came over
[19:16] and started talking with me.
[19:19] We walked a little bit through
the gardens together, talking, and then
[19:23] I asked her a question, I said,
[19:25] “Sailasuta Ma,
do you have a special
[19:28] memory of Guruji
that you hold in your heart?”
[19:32] And I'm always glad I asked that
question because she stopped.
[19:35] And she said: “You know, I do.
[19:38] And it's Guruji in the garden.
[19:40] After a busy day, He would walk
out of our headquarters building.
[19:45] We're at the Mother Center
now in downtown.
[19:48] And he would walk out of the building
and he would go over to a gardenia bush
[19:54] that grew near the entrance.
[19:56] And he would twist off and pluck
a little blossom of gardenia.
[20:01] And then he would hold it in his hand, and
I remember watching him from a distance.
[20:05] He, you know, would put it up to his nose
and he would take a deep inhaling breath
[20:10] and close his eyes and just
hold the gardenia flower and
[20:14] concentrate on the fragrance
that was coming through.
[20:18] And then she said he would continue
to walk around the gardens,
[20:22] kind of just enjoying the evening, and
he would be holding this gardenia flower.
[20:26] And every now and then
he would stop and close his eyes
[20:30] and he would take
a deep inhaling breath,
[20:32] smile as he was concentrating
on the scent,
[20:35] and then open his eyes
and walk some more.”
[20:38] And I think the quote
that we just read of him
[20:42] deeply appreciating God
behind the beauty of nature;
[20:46] he was having that experience.
[20:48] Isn't that a sweet memory, something that,
you know, disciple holds on to
[20:54] as the memory of her Guru?
[20:56] And of course,
I hear this story and I think,
[20:59] “Boy, I wish I had more time
for things like that.”
[21:03] And then I think,
“Well, if I stopped mentally complaining,
[21:06] I would have more time to enjoy.”
[21:11] There we are,
aren't we crazy creatures?
[21:15] We are, we complain
we have so little time,
[21:18] but we're not using the little
time we have very well.
[21:22] And that's what we want
to talk about today a little bit.
[21:25] That is, the universe
does give us time
[21:30] for inner development,
inner growth, appreciation.
[21:34] How well do we use it?
[21:36] We get so involved in what's going on
with the demands of outer life that we
[21:41] forget to even capture the moments
that are given to us.
[21:48] Yogananda has this
term ‘spiritual culture.’
[21:51] It's in the
“Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons”
[21:53] and throughout some
of his inspirational writings.
[21:56] And this means
cultivating happiness,
[21:59] a true contentment
within ourselves.
[22:02] If we are always dependent
on outer conditions
[22:06] for happiness and sense of well-being,
we are forever insecure.
[22:11] Outer conditions,
as we well know, are always changing.
[22:16] They can be very happy
and friendly, comforting
[22:21] for us one moment, and then
the next moment things shift and change.
[22:25] And if we are dependent on those outer
changing conditions for our inner happiness,
[22:31] it is very insecure.
[22:33] We don't know
how long it will last.
[22:35] And so, the teaching here is,
and the teachings of our Guru and
[22:39] way back into ancient times is,
[22:41] “Cultivate inner happiness
[22:43] that is independent
and free from outer conditions.”
[22:48] This is called contentment;
contentment of heart and mind.
[22:53] And yet we think we have no time,
but life does give it.
[22:57] I remember
talking with a man
[22:59] who said he was seeking
some spiritual counsel.
[23:02] He said, “I had a little
successful business.
[23:06] It was going very well.
[23:07] I decided it was over for me
and I sold it to my partner.
[23:12] I made a nice
little sum out of it
[23:13] and now I'm financially
secure for a few years.
[23:17] I'd like to talk a little bit
about what comes next.”
[23:21] I said, “What are you thinking
about? — he said, “Well,
[23:23] I think I'd like to start up a new
business and here's what I'd like to do.”
[23:27] I said, “Wait, wait, wait.
[23:28] Don't move so fast.
[23:31] You just got out of a business,
[23:33] you have some free time.
[23:35] It's given to you by the universe
and your own earnings.
[23:39] Why don't you take time,
perhaps several months,
[23:42] to start cultivating within you
[23:45] success and happiness?
[23:47] This is something that if you do it now
and you have the time for it,
[23:51] you'll never regret.”
[23:52] And so the conversation shifted,
[23:55] how he could use this time now
for inner culture.
[24:00] And he walked away
with a big smile on his face.
[24:02] And I'd like to think
that this was rewarding for him.
[24:06] I remember a conversation with a woman
who told me, she said, “I'm, you know,
[24:11] just out of a relationship
it’s a very painful breakup.
[24:16] I'm getting lonely,
[24:18] and I'm thinking of
starting up a new relationship.”
[24:21] I said, “Wait, wait, wait.
[24:24] Not so fast.
[24:26] I would suggest taking time
for yourself now.
[24:29] You can do it.
[24:31] Trying to fill that loneliness inside
with some other partner —
[24:35] it's not going to be satisfying for you
because you can't choose wisely yet.
[24:39] Take some time for yourself.
[24:42] Cultivate inner
source of happiness
[24:46] and you will never regret it.
[24:48] You may never be lonely again.
[24:51] Wouldn't it be wonderful
[24:53] to have the intimacy
with you all the time?
[24:56] This is what we want in God.”
[24:58] So you see, life provides
open space for us
[25:02] if we can recognize it,
if we can use it.
[25:05] And this is how we can cultivate
[25:08] an inner sense of well-being.
[25:11] So the discussion that we're having
this morning is about
[25:15] the events of life, the demanding
drama that is non-stop,
[25:19] how we become outwardly focused
[25:21] with solving problems,
improving outer conditions,
[25:25] and yet we overlook opportunities
to improve ourself within.
[25:30] And this inner self improvement is what
is going to make all the difference.
[25:39] More than ever before,
I see public guests coming in,
[25:43] visiting the meditation gardens
during the week
[25:46] and we see them come
for the first time.
[25:49] They've never been
to Lake Shrine before
[25:51] and they have
a sense of wonder.
[25:53] They are walking around
and even comment on
[25:55] the vibrations of peace
that they feel
[25:58] present in the middle
of Los Angeles.
[26:00] That contrast is, you know,
amazing to them.
[26:04] And then we see them
come back again.
[26:06] And when they come back a 2nd
and 3rd time, you know, they're prepared.
[26:10] They bring a little
meditation cushion.
[26:12] They bring a notebook
for their inspirational thoughts.
[26:15] They bring an inspirational
book they want to read.
[26:18] You can see that they're thinking
about how to spend their time here
[26:22] for nourishing
themselves inwardly.
[26:25] This is the spirit of Lake Shrine — it's
what Paramahansa Yogananda envisioned,
[26:30] and it's why he created
a space like this
[26:34] in the middle of Los Angeles,
so that people in the city —
[26:37] he said this himself — the people
in the city would not have to travel far
[26:42] to find a place of peace.
[26:47] Guruji encourages what he calls
the cultivation of heavenly qualities.
[26:54] In our Self-Realization
Lesson Study course he says,
[26:58] “Don't say you are
too busy with worry,
[27:00] and the care of just meeting
the necessities of life,
[27:04] to find time for the culture
of heavenly qualities
[27:07] through spiritual study
and meditation.
[27:10] Meditate even a few
minutes a day,
[27:13] but go deep and make
those minutes count.”
[27:18] And so this is what I call
contemplative activity,
[27:21] and we encourage it here among the guests
of Lake Shrine and at the temple also
[27:26] Spiritual meditation,
study of Scripture, truth,
[27:30] reflective thinking,
[27:32] reading inspirational poetry,
[27:34] this is inner culture
[27:36] that we can cultivate
within ourselves.
[27:39] And it creates
a dynamic resource
[27:43] that we can draw upon
[27:45] as life proceeds.
[27:47] You know, down at the beach
there are the tides.
[27:50] You're all familiar
and the tide comes rushing in,
[27:55] the strong current surging,
and then the tide goes out
[27:58] and it's surging again.
[28:01] We're all aware of the incoming
and outgoing tides,
[28:04] but you know,
there's a lull between the tides.
[28:08] There's a lull between.
[28:10] It's called the slack tide.
[28:12] And it's not very long —
it's about an hour
[28:15] between the incoming and outgoing
and the outgoing and incoming
[28:19] where the ocean is at rest.
[28:23] And I've lived near the ocean,
the Pacific, all my life.
[28:26] And so I've been tuned into
the tides for a long time.
[28:29] And I like to, you know,
check the tidal charts.
[28:32] And then I go down to the beach
for a walk at slack tide.
[28:38] It's very calming.
[28:39] It's almost — not just like a lake —
but it's very calm.
[28:44] And you can walk
along the water line,
[28:47] right at the water's edge.
[28:49] And the water is very calm —
it's kind of lapping in it.
[28:52] It's not yet changing.
[28:54] And you can feel
the restless ocean at rest.
[28:59] And when you do this
intentionally
[29:02] it is a wonderful experience.
[29:04] You tune in with the lull,
the natural lull in nature.
[29:09] And so this is something
that we can tune in
[29:12] in our own lives
[29:14] because we're aware of the tides
and how they flow.
[29:17] We're aware of the surging incoming tide
and the outgoing tide and all the changes
[29:21] that are created.
[29:23] And we are involved with it
and complaining about it,
[29:27] but we don't often capture
[29:30] the natural lull
that does occur.
[29:33] It's very short,
it's quiet, it's silent,
[29:36] it's almost a secret.
[29:38] But when you tune into it and begin
to feel it, you can capture and use it
[29:43] for your own self-improvement.
[29:46] I would say that
there's a — just like
[29:48] the ocean tides — there's
a couple of times a day,
[29:52] different in every life
because it's personal — but
[29:54] you can take a deep
breath and breathe.
[29:57] You can relax
[29:59] and you can float and tune in.
[30:03] So we want to discover and enjoy
these natural interludes,
[30:07] we might call them.
[30:08] They're given to us by life
and if we can learn to recognize them
[30:15] and to use them well,
[30:17] it enrichens our inner life
[30:20] and it produces a satisfying
contentment of heart
[30:24] because we are not
always concentrating
[30:27] on all the demands
and all the worries and concerns.
[30:31] This is something we can train ourselves
to just step back temporarily
[30:36] and with that sense of renewal
we can re-engage.
[30:42] The ancient scriptures of India
teach this concept of inner well-being
[30:48] and there's a Sanskrit
word called santosh.
[30:52] Santosh is Sanskrit, it loosely
translates in English as contentment.
[30:59] Now this is not
idleness or laziness,
[31:01] santosh is inner happiness
that is independent
[31:07] of outer conditions.
[31:10] That's kind of a cool concept
isn't it? — that there can be a
[31:14] state of being within us.
[31:16] We might call santosh
soul happiness.
[31:21] There is an ancient
sage, Patanjali,
[31:24] he lived and taught
2000 plus years ago.
[31:28] And one of his spiritual qualities
that he advises seekers to cultivate,
[31:35] niyama — quality
of santosh or contentment.
[31:40] And he teaches us
that this contentment
[31:44] has a power to transcend
all of the changes of outer life.
[31:52] And santosh is so fulfilling.
[31:54] It has a strength
and a power to it
[31:56] and it's so fulfilling that we don't
require the world to give us happiness.
[32:01] We become less and less
dependent upon outer conditions.
[32:05] It relieves us
of self-doubt and anxiety
[32:09] because we have begun
to shift our concentration.
[32:13] And as we shift our concentration,
then this sense of well-being
[32:16] begins to replace
the insecurities
[32:21] that are imposed by the world.
[32:24] So, santosh is a direct
product of meditation.
[32:29] And if you're walking around the lake,
let's say, and you find a little bench
[32:33] and you sit on the bench
and you just relax,
[32:36] there's nice warm sunshine,
and you look out over the lake,
[32:40] swans are kind of cruising around
looking for handouts.
[32:45] you kind of forget at first, don't you,
the worries of the day — concerns?
[32:52] You close your eyes, you're just sitting
in the sunshine, closing your eyes,
[32:56] deep breathe, exhale.
[32:59] There's a quiet feeling
within you
[33:02] and you realize this is really
a wonderful moment.
[33:05] Let me enjoy it.
[33:07] And as you enjoy this quiet moment,
there is a vibrational shift
[33:14] and it feels really, really good.
[33:17] Take another deep
breath and that
[33:19] inner well-being begins to grow.
[33:21] And by the time you get up
from your bench and you walk again,
[33:24] there is this kind of refreshing
strength within yourself.
[33:28] This is santosh — this is santosh.
[33:32] And it has the power
to increase.
[33:34] It has potential.
[33:36] The more we concentrate on it,
the more we cultivate it,
[33:39] the more it grows,
[33:41] and it has a expanding influence
[33:45] on the rest
of our consciousness.
[33:48] “The Bhagavad Gita” speaks
of this enduring contentment of heart.
[33:55] Chapter 2, verse 70,
Krishna says,
[33:58] “That one is full with contentment
who absorbs all desires within,
[34:04] as the brimful ocean
remains unmoved
[34:07] and unchanged by waters
entering into it.”
[34:11] “That one is full with contentment
who absorbs all desires within
[34:16] as the brimful ocean
remains unmoved
[34:20] and unchanged by waters
entering into it.”
[34:24] And our Guru comments
inspirationally, and he says,
[34:27] “As rivers flowing into the sea
keep it ever full
[34:31] but do not disturb
its changeless vastness,
[34:34] so the streams of desires
transmuted and absorbed
[34:38] within the changeless
oceanic self
[34:41] have no ripple effect
in the yogi,
[34:44] but keep him overflowing
with energy,
[34:46] contentment, and a peace
that never oscillates.”
[34:51] So we're kind of focusing on nature
today, aren't we? — of flowers
[34:54] and the beauty behind them,
the lake, the rivers, the oceans.
[34:57] But you know,
that's a part of our life,
[35:01] and the currents that flow
without also flow within.
[35:07] And a very important
message here —
[35:10] take away — is that
it's impossible
[35:14] to control the outer
events of life,
[35:18] but it is possible to control
our experience from within.
[35:24] So this is a good
take away message.
[35:26] We can't control life,
[35:28] life has its own dynamics
[35:32] but we can control our experience
of life from within.
[35:36] And this is
the spiritual approach.
[35:42] Back to the stanza of contentment,
[35:45] Paramahansa Yogananda refers to memories
[35:49] from his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar,
on my my far right.
[35:54] He says, “This stanza
of the "Bhagavad Gita”
[35:57] was a favorite with my great master,
Swami Sri Yukteswarji,
[36:01] and was oft quoted by him.
[36:03] He would experience
some new manifestation
[36:06] arising from his vast
inner ocean of peace;
[36:10] then he would express in a sonorous voice
[36:13] the realizations he was feeling within.
[36:15] His face shone
with a great inward light.
[36:20] At such times, those around him
who were spiritually sensitive
[36:23] could feel my Master's
overflowing perception of peace
[36:27] being transferred to them.
[36:29] I often inwardly hear him reciting
this “Gita” verse in Sanskrit,
[36:34] just as I used to in years gone by.”
[36:39] So, Sri Yukteswar is looking over my
shoulder now, and maybe he's smiling,
[36:45] and I think Guruji is
explaining to us that,
[36:48] that seemingly stern look
on his face is not judgement,
[36:52] it's not discipline.
[36:54] It is santosh,
[36:57] deep inner contentment of heart
and mind in Cosmic Consciousness.
[37:05] So it's impossible to control
outer events of life,
[37:08] but we can control
our experience from within.
[37:13] This is carpe diem.
[37:15] This is where we seize the day,
[37:18] how we interpret, how we respond,
[37:20] how we experience fully
the moments of our day.
[37:26] And I make a little journal entry
and I say, “Stop complaining,
[37:31] you will have more time for praising.”
[37:35] And it really is our choice, isn't it?
[37:37] It's our choice.
[37:39] We can hear all the truths in the world
and we can ponder them,
[37:42] but unless we make a choice
as to what we will do,
[37:46] how we will think,
[37:49] what thoughts we will entertain,
what thoughts we will release,
[37:54] this is where we can control
our experience of life.
[37:57] So when my mind cannot make sense
[38:00] of the chaos around me,
what's going on,
[38:03] we try to think it out,
we try to explain it to ourselves.
[38:06] We think that by understanding it
in some limited way
[38:08] we are going to resolve it.
[38:11] But it doesn't work, does it?
[38:13] And so I have learned,
just let it go.
[38:17] Let it go.
[38:18] Concentrate on the feeling
of inner santosh, contentment.
[38:23] And the feeling that comes then
from the heart needs no explanation.
[38:28] Everything gets resolved
in that feeling,
[38:30] and the more we concentrate on it,
the more expansive it becomes.
[38:35] This is very satisfying
[38:37] to be able to solve the complicated
problems of daily life
[38:41] without any mental explanation.
[38:44] This is the power of Yoga.
[38:47] I was having a spiritual conversation
with a woman from the East Coast,
[38:51] and she said, “Brother, I'm having
a late midlife crisis.
[38:56] I've lost the job that I love.
[38:57] I've lost the professional role
that I love.
[39:00] And to make things even worse,
[39:02] my 50th birthday is next month.
[39:05] I'm getting old. I'm lost.
I'm in crisis.”
[39:10] And so, I said, “Well, you know,
this is challenging,
[39:13] but you're talking with a swami,
so let me reinterpret for you.
[39:19] You have finished an important work.
[39:21] You're now a little older,
but you're much, much wiser.
[39:25] Now you're ready for something that
is even better than you did before.
[39:29] You have a new opportunity.
[39:31] Your wisdom can reinvent yourself
in new and exciting ways.”
[39:36] And she said, “Why do you have
to make everything so amazing?”
[39:42] “Well, okay, you can have your crisis
if you want it.” “No, no, no.
[39:46] I want amazing, and I want it now.”
[39:49] So, she's Miss Amazing.
[39:51] She's making it happen even now.
[39:54] This is what we can
recognize within ourselves.
[39:57] The mind goes south,
the emotions follow,
[40:00] and all of a sudden,
we have to resurrect our spirit.
[40:03] And we can do it from within
[40:05] by not depending on outer conditions
[40:08] to define who we are
and to define our happiness.
[40:12] We look deeper within ourselves
to that soul presence.
[40:17] With faith, we know it's there,
[40:19] and we use the methods our Guru
gives us to float in spirit
[40:25] and then draw from
the feeling of our heart.
[40:29] So, we're crazy creatures and we achieve
great things kicking and screaming,
[40:33] but here we are,
[40:35] and we can learn to make
the most out of it.
[40:38] I like a quote from the educator,
inspirational author, L.R. Knost.
[40:44] Listen to what she says. You'll like it.
[40:47] She says: “Life is amazing.
[40:50] And then it's awful.
[40:52] And then it's amazing again.
[40:54] And in between
the amazing and the awful,
[40:57] it's ordinary, mundane and routine.
[41:00] Breathe in the amazing,
hold on through the awful,
[41:04] relax and exhale during the ordinary.
[41:07] You are just living heartbreaking, soul-
healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life.
[41:13] And it's breathtakingly beautiful.”
[41:16] So that's quotable, isn't it?
[41:19] That's very quotable.
[41:20] And instead of complaining
about the contrast,
[41:23] she's embracing them.
[41:25] And I think there's a magic here
[41:27] in embracing the oppositions of life
[41:32] without having to explain them
or fix them.
[41:36] We can resolve the experience
and lift ourselves up from within,
[41:40] and there's this magic.
That's the solution.
[41:44] Paramahansa Yogananda on true happiness,
[41:47] one of my favorite quotes because
it's so clear and actionable.
[41:52] He says: “Many people doubt that
finding God is the purpose of life;
[41:58] but everyone can accept the idea
[42:00] that the purpose of life
is to find happiness.
[42:04] I say that God is Happiness.
He is Bliss.
[42:08] He is Love. He is Joy that will never
go away from your soul.
[42:11] So why shouldn't you try
to acquire that Happiness?
[42:15] No one else can give it to you.
[42:17] You must continuously
cultivate it yourself.”
[42:21] So, this is the message,
recognizing that that source is there
[42:28] and then beginning to
seriously cultivate it
[42:31] in the moments
that life gives.
[42:37] I think we can learn to be
interactively responsive to life.
[42:42] When the tides are flowing,
we have to engage;
[42:45] when the slack tide comes,
we can relax and release.
[42:50] And if we can feel this
rhythm and flow,
[42:53] we can find our way forward
the way God intends.
[42:58] So, through difficult experiences,
we are learning an important truth.
[43:02] We cannot control
the outer events of life,
[43:06] but we can control
our inner experience.
[43:11] Is this helpful?
[43:13] I think we have some things going here
that we can take forward with us.
[43:19] So, we can discover
an inner peace,
[43:21] and it can be a contentment
that is so strong and powerful
[43:25] that it consumes
fear and insecurity.
[43:28] And in the face of threats,
[43:32] we can be feeling that inner contentment
and a strength that comes from it.
[43:37] I think this is a goal
we're striving for.
[43:41] And we can make progress
with this
[43:43] because we are in this battle
every single day.
[43:46] Sometimes the day is good,
sometimes it's not.
[43:50] But if we have a source within us that is
not dependent on the changing conditions,
[43:56] victory is close.
[44:00] So, a little spiritual homework.
[44:02] I think you'll like the homework
for this week; it's fun.
[44:05] But first I'd like to read you
a quote from Paramahansa Yogananda
[44:09] where I think it's connected somehow
with his experience at Lake Shrine,
[44:14] floating in the lake.
[44:16] Listen to it and you can tell me.
[44:18] Guruji says:
"When you are struggling in the water,
[44:22] you are not so much conscious of the water
as you are of your struggle.
[44:26] But when you let go and relax,
you float;
[44:31] then you feel the whole lake
lapping soothingly around your body.
[44:37] That is the way God is.
[44:39] When you are calm,
you feel the whole universe of happiness
[44:43] rocking gently
beneath your consciousness.
[44:46] That happiness is God."
[44:49] He's reaching out in a very poetic way
and connecting with our hearts
[44:55] because this is something
we know we want.
[44:58] So, the homework is
do what I do.
[45:02] Try it anytime.
[45:04] Walk around the lake
and pick your favorite view.
[45:07] And you can stand at
the railing there and you can
[45:10] look out over the lake,
or you could sit on your favorite bench.
[45:13] Everybody seems to have
their favorite bench.
[45:16] And you just kind of
take in the view and the peace.
[45:20] And then concentrate on the lake
and visualize
[45:25] Paramahansa Yogananda floating
in the middle of the lake,
[45:29] just floating there,
and then float with him.
[45:33] Just kind of float.
[45:34] And when you feel yourself
floating with him, close your eyes
[45:37] and just feel that lake lapping and
the peace of relaxing into the floating.
[45:43] That's the homework;
how's that?
[45:46] We need that, don't we?
[45:48] We need this in our life.
[45:50] We struggle so hard to get it, and then
when we finally get it, it's gone.
[45:56] So, if we can learn
to go with the rhythms of life,
[46:00] the ebb and the flow
and the slack between,
[46:03] that we can
capture the interlude.
[46:06] And then we can
relax into it,
[46:08] feeling from within
the peace and the energy that comes.
[46:12] We will gradually be cultivating, along
with daily meditation, this experience.
[46:18] It's an experience
of Santosh — contentment.
[46:23] And the more we practice it,
the stronger it will become
[46:29] until it becomes
a natural reflex.
[46:32] And this is what we want.
[46:34] We want contentment
to become a natural reflex.
[46:37] You start to feel fear,
you turn toward contentment.
[46:41] You start, you realize
you're becoming anxious;
[46:44] you call up this feeling
from your heart.
[46:47] We can do this, and it will increase
and improve the quality of our daily life.
[46:53] This is what it means
to live a spiritual life.
[46:58] Guruji says, finally, "Those who
float on the still waters of inner peace
[47:02] never have to undergo
the pain of unfulfillment."
[47:07] That's because we are no longer
seeking ultimate happiness in the world.
[47:11] We are enjoying what life brings;
we are loving with our family and friends;
[47:15] we are celebrating our anniversaries
and birthdays.
[47:19] But we know that within us is the
only place we're going to find lasting,
[47:24] sustainable, ever-increasing happiness.
[47:30] Let us all now please stand
for our closing prayer.
[47:38] Folding your hands and feeling God's love
within you and all around you.
[47:42] Please pray:
[47:43] Heavenly Father, Mother,
Friend, Beloved God,
[47:50] Jesus Christ,
[47:52] Bhagavan Krishna,
[47:54] Mahavatar Babaji,
[47:57] Lahiri Mahasaya,
[48:00] Swami Sri Yukteswar,
[48:04] our guru, Paramahansa Yogananda,
[48:09] saints of all religions,
we bow to you all.
[48:15] O Beloved God,
[48:18] I am a bubble of light
[48:21] floating in the
ocean of your Infinite Consciousness.
[48:28] O Beloved God,
[48:30] I want to expand my heart
[48:34] that I may feel and know
my true home is omnipresence.
[48:42] Aum.
[48:45] Peace.
[48:46] Amen.
