Michael Singer, the author of The Untethered Soul, The Surrender Experiment, and Wisdom Untethered: A Time for Questions, sits down for a short conversation with Tami Simon and asks his listeners a question most of us never think to ask ourselves: did you enjoy what happened to you when you were five, or ten, or fifteen? Almost nobody says yes. So why, he wants to know, did you decide to keep it? The seven-minute exchange that follows is a compact map of his whole approach to inner freedom, built around one stubborn idea. Experience that we resist does not disappear. It gets stored, it keeps circling, and it blocks the light we are reaching for. Along the way Singer takes on the charge of spiritual bypassing, explains the yogic concept of the samskara, borrows an old line about darkness from Yogananda, and makes a case that real purification has less to do with clean living than with having less stuff inside.

The conversation opens in a rhythm familiar to anyone who has heard Singer speak. Simon raises the question of whether his teaching is a way of checking out. Singer answers, and the answer is the hinge for everything else.

Is letting go just a form of spiritual bypassing?

Simon brings up a common misreading of his work: that he teaches a kind of spiritual bypassing, a way of stepping around painful material rather than facing it. Singer rejects the framing outright. "Yeah, literally the opposite," he says in the clip at 1:00. The bypass he has in mind is specific. Something difficult or uncomfortable comes up, and rather than deal with it, a person builds a spiritual surface over it. "I'll wear white clothes," he says. "I'll serve. I'll do things that look spiritual. While really what's going on inside is anything but that."

The distinction he draws is between fixing and letting go. Bypassing treats the discomfort as something to be avoided. Singer's method treats it as something to be allowed. "You don't have to fix it," he says at about 1:34. "You should let it go. It's very different." The crucial phrase comes a little later, at 1:48: "You don't go down to it. You let it come up to you." In his telling, the material will surface on its own unless we push it away, and the practice is to receive it, not to hunt it down and not to hide from it.

"So it's not bypassing. It's inviting it to come up and letting it pass through." (Michael Singer, speaking with Tami Simon, Sounds True, approx. 2:00)

That sentence carries the whole argument. Bypassing keeps the thing out of view. Singer's approach lets it move through the system so it can finish its course. The difference matters because the two approaches can look identical from the outside. Someone sitting quietly, serving others, and speaking calmly may be doing either one.

What exactly is a samskara?

The word samskara comes from the yogic tradition, and Singer is careful to define it in terms a newcomer can follow. He credits modern psychology, and specifically Freud, with surfacing an idea the yogic traditions already held: that we push things down. "He was not an enlightened spiritual being in any way, shape, or form," Singer says of Freud at about 3:25, "but he brought to the surface that, you know what? You shove stuff down in there. That's a samskara."

The key distinction Singer draws is between a memory and a samskara. A memory is ordinary. It arrives, it leaves, and you can summon it back without any charge attached. "It's fine," he says. "You should remember things. They pass through and then you can bring them back." A samskara is a memory that did not pass through. Something came in, it disturbed you enough that your will pushed it away, and it stayed.

He also makes clear that a samskara is not a mystical object. It is a pattern in life that actually happened. Something was said, something was done, or something was not said or not done, and it "hit you wrong." Singer puts it plainly: "It's not even a thing. It's just energy at that point." The event is over, but the energy of the reaction was never discharged. That unfinished energy is what he means by a samskara.

Why does energy move in circles?

This is the image in the video's title, and it is the most original piece of the argument. Singer's reasoning runs like this. Energy has to keep moving. But when we resist an experience, the energy has nowhere to go, and so it does what energy can do in a closed system. "The way that energy can move and stand still is in a circle," he explains. "That's why the circle is such an important shape in our universe. Planets, this, that, everything." A circle is the shape of motion that stays in one place. What you refused to let through is still in you, moving around itself.

That is why Singer frames the stored material as a blockage. The energy is not gone; it is looping. And a loop inside the body and mind is not neutral. "Those blockages that you shoved down there are blocking the light," he says. Here the teaching becomes practical. You can sit in meditation and reach for the light, and he says plainly that doing so is "wonderful by all means." But the light cannot fully come in while the loops are still turning. Letting go of the blockage is what allows the light to arrive.

"Every single thing that's down there, no matter how dark it is, no matter when it happened, no matter how long it's been in there, is capable of turning into light as you let it go." (Michael Singer, Sounds True conversation, approx. 2:07)

Singer's word for this is transmutation of energy. He does not describe it as a technique you perform. "It happens naturally as you let go," he says. The stored energy does not need to be interpreted or dramatized. It needs to be allowed to complete its movement.

What does "darkness is the absence of light" have to do with it?

Near the middle of the exchange, Singer turns to a line he likes. The video's description attributes it to Yogananda: darkness is only the absence of light. Singer uses it to shift the frame. The stuck material is not some solid evil lodged in us; it is the lack of light where energy has stopped flowing. Once the blockage clears, what is underneath, in his words, "is God, is shakti."

This is a subtle point, and it changes how the work feels. If darkness were a substance, we would need to fight it. If it is an absence, the work is to remove what is obstructing the light. That is a gentler, and in Singer's view more accurate, account of what happens in inner work. It also explains his insistence that you do not need to go digging for your worst experiences. Dig too hard and you are back to the old pattern of gripping. Let it come up, and let it go, and the light does the rest.

What does real purification look like?

Singer ends his answer with a line that will surprise anyone who has equated purification with strict conduct. "Real purification doesn't mean you don't swear," he says. "Purification means you don't have all that stuff in there." It is a deliberately earthy correction. He is not asking students to become polished or pious. He is describing an interior condition: how much unfinished charge you are carrying.

This reframes a lot of spiritual striving. A person can be scrupulous in behavior and still be full of samskaras, reacting to every old wound with a sealed-off intensity. Another person can be plain-spoken and still be light inside, because nothing is lodged in there resisting the flow. Purification, on this account, is about emptying, not about appearance.

How do you actually let it come up?

Singer admits that the natural impulse runs the other way. "The natural impulse is to push it away, to protect yourself, and then try to create an environment outside which doesn't hit your stuff." That is the default strategy of a lot of people: arrange your life so nothing touches the bruise. He suggests that this works for a while and then stops working. "Eventually, you'll catch on," he says. And then comes his almost comic summons, delivered as a kind of open invitation: "Come and get it. You want a piece of me? Take it, because I don't want it. I don't want that stuff in there."

The practical implications are simple to state and hard to live. Notice when something hits you wrong. Recognize that the reaction is energy, not a verdict on who you are. Do not protect it, and do not chase it. Let it pass. Singer's claim is that this is the path, and that every teacher he draws on points in the same direction: you can learn to be more open, to deal with what arises, and to let it go, even if you do not know how yet.

Where to go from here

If this exchange pulls at you, the most direct next step is to sit with the question Singer opens with and not rush the answer. Ask what you have been keeping, and why. Notice the difference between a memory you can hold lightly and a samskara that still hums when touched. For a fuller treatment of his approach, the conversation draws on his book The Untethered Soul, and his later titles The Surrender Experiment and Wisdom Untethered: A Time for Questions. Sounds True also offers a wider library of teachers and recorded classes for anyone who wants to keep exploring the territory Singer maps in these few minutes.

[0:00] I was asked people

[0:02] did you like that experience you had

[0:03] when you were 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 and

[0:06] different things happened? No. Then why

[0:08] did you choose to keep it?

[0:10] It's already over, right? Well, I mean

[0:12] they're they're gone and then

[0:13] everything's over from your childhood.

[0:15] Why did you decide that because I don't

[0:18] like it, I'll keep it?

[0:24] >> You

[0:26] mentioned as you were talking about this

[0:28] path of letting go that early in your

[0:30] life you wanted to quote-unquote get out

[0:33] and then you discovered this art and

[0:37] one of the misunderstandings, I think,

[0:40] of your work that you address right

[0:43] early on in Wisdom Untethered is is this

[0:47] approach that you teach a type of

[0:50] spiritual bypassing?

[0:52] Let's get out or not. And you're very

[0:54] clear that it's not spiritual bypassing.

[0:57] So, can you explain that?

[0:59] >> Yeah,

[1:00] literally the opposite.

[1:02] Spiritual [clears throat] bypassing

[1:03] means what are you bypassing? The what

[1:06] came up that was difficult. What came up

[1:08] that was uncomfortable. I don't want to

[1:09] deal with that, so I'll have a spiritual

[1:11] ego. I'll I'll serve. I'll I'll do

[1:13] anything I can do. I'll wear white

[1:15] clothes. I won't pick anybody.

[1:17] I'll I'll do things that look spiritual.

[1:21] While really what's going on inside is

[1:23] anything but that. That to me is what's

[1:26] meant by spiritual bypassing, all right?

[1:28] If when it comes up you're willing to

[1:31] address it, not address it mean fix it.

[1:34] You don't have to fix it. You should let

[1:36] it go. It's very different. So, you're

[1:38] not avoiding it. And the way I tell it

[1:41] ultimately, I think, the clearest is

[1:43] you don't go down to it.

[1:46] You let it come up to you.

[1:48] And that's very deep. It will come up to

[1:50] you unless you push it away. So, it's

[1:52] not bypassing. It's inviting it to come

[1:55] up

[1:56] and letting it pass through. All right?

[1:59] So, it's it's literally lifting

[2:01] you know, bypassing it. And all the all

[2:03] the stuff down there is called

[2:04] transmutation of energy. Every single

[2:07] thing that's down there, no matter how

[2:08] dark it is, no matter when it happened,

[2:10] no matter how long it's been in there,

[2:11] is capable of turning into light as you

[2:14] let it go. But, you don't do that. It

[2:17] happens naturally as you let go. All

[2:19] right? Uh you got to know once said,

[2:21] which I really like, he said, "Darkness

[2:25] is the absence of light."

[2:27] And that's the basic is the absence of

[2:29] light. So, if you're willing to let go,

[2:32] really let go, then what's underneath it

[2:34] all is God, is shakti.

[2:36] So,

[2:38] I'm glad people talk about spiritual

[2:39] bypassing cuz some people do that. This

[2:41] is the opposite. This is welcoming it to

[2:44] come up and relax through it so that it

[2:47] can make its way completely through and

[2:49] not be bypassed.

[2:51] >> So, to to get a little bit more precise,

[2:54] often when you talk about what it is

[2:56] that we're letting come up, you describe

[2:59] this using language from the yogic

[3:02] tradition as our samskaras

[3:06] have been triggered by XYC event, and

[3:09] that's what's coming up. So, explain

[3:11] samskaras, particularly for people who

[3:13] are hearing that word for the first

[3:14] time.

[3:15] >> Well,

[3:16] actually, [clears throat] fortunately,

[3:17] it feels very easy because of modern

[3:19] psychology and psychology altogether.

[3:21] Like, I love Freud.

[3:23] Okay? Like, he was not an enlightened

[3:25] spiritual being in any way, shape, or

[3:26] form, but he brought to the surface

[3:29] that, "You know what? You shove stuff

[3:31] down in there."

[3:33] That's a samskara.

[3:35] It's not a memory. Memories come and go.

[3:37] You can have a memory, you can bring it

[3:38] back. It doesn't do anything. It's fine.

[3:40] You should remember things. They do.

[3:41] They they pass through and then you can

[3:43] bring them back. A samskara is one that

[3:45] didn't pass through.

[3:46] That basically it came in and you

[3:48] couldn't handle it. It disturbs you so

[3:50] much that you you in there, your will in

[3:53] there, you pushed it away. Okay? And so,

[3:57] that's what a samskara is. It's a

[3:58] pattern that was

[4:00] a pattern in life that happened. If it

[4:02] didn't happen, don't worry about it. But

[4:04] it obviously happened, so a reality, and

[4:06] it didn't make it through you.

[4:08] Everything will make it through you.

[4:09] If you let it, if you let go. So, you

[4:12] didn't let go. So, now you stored this

[4:14] stuff inside, and that's where all the

[4:16] negativity comes from. That's where all

[4:17] the darkness comes from. That's you

[4:18] know, it it it literally those blockages

[4:21] that you shoved down there are blocking

[4:23] the light. So, to sit there and have all

[4:25] the blockages and then reach for the

[4:26] light, that's it's wonderful by all

[4:28] means. Do everything you can. But let If

[4:31] you let go of the blockages,

[4:33] it naturally comes in it turns into

[4:35] light.

[4:36] >> [clears throat]

[4:36] >> So, basically,

[4:38] that is what an samskara is. Not a

[4:40] difficult concept. It's basically

[4:42] something that came in. How do you know?

[4:44] You know.

[4:45] You You really do know if it didn't come

[4:46] in, right? It came into your inside.

[4:49] Happened outside.

[4:51] Happened inside, too. But happened

[4:52] outside, let's say. Somebody said

[4:53] something, somebody did something, and

[4:55] they didn't say something, didn't do

[4:56] something.

[4:57] It up It came in and it hit you wrong.

[5:00] And what do you do? You attempt to

[5:02] protect yourself from it. It's not even

[5:04] a thing. It's just energy at that point.

[5:06] It comes in and it's energy inside. If

[5:09] you protect yourself from it, what

[5:11] you're doing is resisting the energy,

[5:13] and it will stay blocked in there. It

[5:14] was What I teach is it is circles around

[5:17] itself. Energy Energy has to keep

[5:19] moving.

[5:20] Well, the way that energy can move and

[5:21] stand still is in a circle. That's why

[5:24] the circle is such an important

[5:26] uh shape in our universe. Planets, this,

[5:29] that, everything, all right? It's

[5:30] because energy can stay in one place and

[5:34] still be moving. But you don't want that

[5:36] energy in there. I I was asked people,

[5:39] "Did you like that experience you had

[5:40] when you were 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 and

[5:43] different things happened?" No. Then why

[5:45] did you choose to keep it? Right? It's

[5:47] already over, right? Well, I mean, dad

[5:49] and all gone and everything's over from

[5:51] your childhood. Why did you decide that

[5:54] because I don't like it, I'll keep it?

[5:56] So, an samskara is something you kept.

[5:59] You pushed it away, which I understand.

[6:02] Things are difficult to deal with. But

[6:04] you'll see it through this talk that the

[6:06] essence of all my teachers are you can

[6:08] learn

[6:09] to be more open. You can learn to deal

[6:11] with it. You can learn to let it go. You

[6:13] don't know how to now. The natural

[6:15] impulse is to push it away, to protect

[6:17] yourself, and then try to create an

[6:19] environment outside which doesn't hit

[6:20] your stuff.

[6:22] Eventually, you'll catch on.

[6:24] Come and get it. You want a piece of me?

[6:27] Take it cuz I don't want it. I don't

[6:28] want that stuff in there. So, that's

[6:30] what a scar is, and that's what the path

[6:32] of of purification. Pure Real

[6:35] purification doesn't mean no swear.

[6:37] Purification means you don't have all

[6:38] that stuff in there.

Singer describes a samskara as an experience that came in, hit you wrong, and did not pass through because you pushed it away. Unlike an ordinary memory, which can come and go freely, a samskara stays in the system as unfinished energy. He emphasizes that it is not a mystical object but a real pattern from life that was never released.
Singer says spiritual bypassing means avoiding something difficult by covering it with spiritual appearances, such as serving or wearing white clothes while avoiding what is actually happening inside. Letting go, in his view, means you do not go down to the difficulty but let it come up to you and pass through without being fixed or pushed away.
Singer explains that energy has to keep moving, and the only way it can move while staying in one place is in a circle. When you resist an experience, the energy stays blocked and loops around itself inside you. Letting go allows that circling energy to complete its movement.
No. Singer says real purification does not mean you never swear. He defines it as having less unfinished material stored inside you, so purification is about what you carry internally rather than outward conduct.
Singer credits Freud with bringing to the surface the idea that people shove things down inside. He notes Freud was not an enlightened spiritual being, but says the psychological insight about suppressed material parallels what the samskara concept describes.
The video attributes this line to Yogananda, and Singer uses it to explain that blockages are not a solid substance to fight but a lack of light where energy has stopped flowing. Clearing the blockage lets what is underneath, which he calls God or shakti, become apparent.
Singer suggests you do not need to go digging for difficult experiences. He says the material will come up to you on its own if you do not push it away, and the practice is to let it pass through rather than to chase or dramatize it.
