The Cost of Perfection: Beyond Non-Duality Dogma

Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen master, once said something that cuts to the bone: "The real miracle is not to walk on water. The real miracle is to walk on the earth." That single sentence contains everything—or nearly everything—about what's gone wrong with how we practice spirituality in the modern West, and everything about how to find our way back. It's a sentence that explains why a man who spent years identifying as a non-dual teacher had to step away from that label entirely, and why his journey backward is, paradoxically, a leap forward.

For decades, spiritual seekers have been told that enlightenment means transcending the human condition—shedding the body, quieting the mind, escaping suffering, ascending beyond the realm of thought and feeling and ordinary life. The allure is seductive. It promises an end to pain, a glimpse of something vast and eternal and untouched by the messiness of being alive. But there's a dark side to this promise, one that often goes unnamed in spiritual circles because naming it requires admitting that the very teachings meant to liberate us can become chains.

How Spiritual Seeking Becomes Obsession

The journey into spirituality often begins with genuine hunger—a sense that something is missing, that beneath the surface of ordinary consciousness lies something more real, more true, more worth having. For many years, this hunger drove the search. Meditation cushions, retreats, teachers, altered states, the intoxicating taste of transcendent experience. The teachings promise that if you look deeply enough, you'll find that what you really are is not a separate self struggling through life, but pure awareness itself—pristine, unchanging, untouched by doubt or fear or the ravages of time. On one level, this teaching points to something real. Look for yourself through meditation, and you may indeed discover that the solid sense of "me" becomes less solid, that awareness itself has a quality of vastness and stillness. The words don't matter—"pure awareness," "Brahman," "the Godhead," "Buddha-nature"—they're all fingers pointing at the moon, as the Zen saying goes.

But fingers aren't the moon. And herein lies the problem: when a living truth hardens into dogma, when an opening becomes a cage, when a metaphor gets mistaken for reality itself, something corrupts. What began as an invitation to look directly at your own experience transforms into an identity, another resting place for the ego to lodge itself. "I am pure awareness," the seeker declares. "I am not my thoughts, not my body, not my story. I am untouchable consciousness itself." There's a beautiful truth buried in that statement. There's also a dangerous lie.

The Identity Trap Inside Non-Dual Teachings

The danger emerges quietly, almost imperceptibly. A spiritual seeker who has glimpsed or deeply experienced the spacious awareness that non-dual teachings point toward begins to identify with it. The ego—that mechanism that creates a sense of separate self—doesn't disappear when you recognize pure awareness. It simply finds a new identity to cling to. "I am pure awareness," becomes the new ground, the new superiority, the new way of being special. The teachings that were supposed to dissolve the separate self instead furnish it with a more refined disguise, one that feels more spiritual, more evolved, more immune to criticism than the ordinary ego ever was.

The problem then becomes brutal: if you are pure awareness, if enlightenment is your true nature, then what do you do with doubts? What do you do with fears? What do you do with the very human feelings of rage, grief, jealousy, insecurity that still arise in your body and nervous system? The non-dual framework, when it becomes dogmatic, offers only one answer: deny them, transcend them, recognize them as illusion. Call them ego. Call them mind. But under no circumstances truly feel them, because that would contradict your new identity as perfect, pure, and awakened.

This is where the spirituality becomes toxic. Trauma gets suppressed rather than healed. Genuine human struggles get labeled as "spiritual bypassing" or "ego," as if naming the pathology magically resolves it. Students and partners of spiritual teachers who claim perfect enlightenment end up holding space for all the shadow material the teacher has disowned. The whole system becomes a kind of mutual agreement to pretend, and the cost is paid in human connection, in authenticity, in the very capacity for genuine love that most spiritual paths claim to be cultivating.

Meeting Enlightened Teachers and Finding Them Human

The reckoning comes when you finally spend unguarded time with the people who are supposed to embody these teachings. Not on stage, not in the formal teaching setting where image is carefully managed, but in the green room, at the dinner table, in the hours when no one is watching. What emerges is both humbling and strangely liberating: they're human. All of them. Every single one, without exception—the most famous, the most successful, the ones with the most devoted followings. They have doubts. They have fears. They get triggered. They carry unresolved trauma. Some of them are generous and honest about it. Others perform perfection so relentlessly that their partners and students absorb all the emotional toxicity they refuse to acknowledge in themselves.

This isn't meant as judgment. It's meant as medicine. Because once you realize that even the people who've taught non-duality to thousands still struggle with being human, something cracks open in you. You begin to see that the struggle itself isn't a sign of failure. That imperfection isn't a spiritual defect. That vulnerability isn't something to transcend but something to honor, even to revere. The irony becomes obvious: in the name of non-duality, many spiritual teachers were actually becoming deeply dualistic—separating themselves from ordinary humanity, creating a hierarchy where enlightened beings stood above normal people, claiming immunity from the very emotional and relational struggles that define being alive.

The Unraveling: When Teachings Don't Match Living

This gap between the teaching and the lived reality is where genuine transformation begins. Because no matter how sophisticated your spiritual concepts are, no matter how many retreats you've done or how deeply you've meditated, if you're not actually embodying those teachings in your daily life—in your relationships, your conflicts, your moments of fear—then what do those teachings really mean? If you believe in non-duality but treat your partner with contempt when you're triggered, you're not living non-duality. You're just performing it. If you teach that all thoughts are illusion but you're secretly consumed with anxiety about your image and reputation, you're not teaching non-duality. You're teaching dissociation dressed up in spiritual language.

The question that finally cuts through all the abstraction is this: where does spirituality actually live? Is it in the peak experience, in the profound meditation, in the concept you can articulate? Or is it in the way you show up when you're afraid? Is it in how you handle conflict? Is it in whether you can stay present with your own pain without bypassing it, and whether you can do the same for someone you love?

Reclaiming the Sacred Within Imperfection

There is no transcendence of humanity that doesn't also include a passionate embrace of it. True spirituality isn't about eradicating vulnerability. It's about giving yourself—moment by moment—permission to be beautifully, wonderfully human. To have doubts and still be whole. To struggle and still be worthy. To make mistakes and still be divine. The ocean of awareness may be undying and unchanging, but you appear as a unique wave, with a particular body, a particular nervous system, a particular history. Those aren't obstacles to spirituality. They're its very substance.

This is where non-duality can finally breathe freely, when it stops being in war with duality. Yes, on the deepest level, we are all expressions of the same consciousness. And yes, you are also an individual human being having a unique experience that matters. These aren't contradictions. They're the paradox that life itself is built on. The sacred isn't somewhere else, some realm of pure awareness you have to escape the body to reach. It's here, in the earth, in the breath, in the ache in your chest when you're afraid, in the joy of connection when you let someone truly know you.

Thich Nhat Hanh understood this. Walking on the earth, feeling the ground beneath your feet, that's the miracle. Not because the earth is illusion and consciousness is real, but because consciousness is expressing itself as earth, as body, as these imperfect, struggling, beautiful human beings. When spirituality finally stops being at war with humanity, when it stops pretending that enlightenment means transcending our vulnerability and starts meaning that we can meet our vulnerability with love—that's when the real transformation begins. That's when the teaching becomes alive.

Where to go from here

If you're drawn to spiritual practice, the question worth asking is not "How do I transcend my humanity?" but "How do I fall more deeply in love with my humanity?" This shifts everything. It means your doubts become valuable information, not spiritual defects. Your relational struggles become sacred ground for practicing presence and compassion, not shameful proof that you haven't awakened. Your body, with all its appetites and sensitivities and needs, becomes a temple to inhabit consciously, not a prison to escape.

The work then becomes not about achieving some future state of perfection, but about meeting what's alive in you right now with curiosity and kindness. That's where the real miracle is. That's where spirituality finally becomes useful—not as a way to transcend life, but as a way to be fully alive.

[0:00] it was the spiritual teacher tikat Han

[0:02] who said the real Miracle is not to walk

[0:05] on water the real Miracle is to walk on

[0:08] the earth and I love that because to me

[0:11] it speaks to the heart of what true

[0:14] spirituality really is you know when we

[0:16] get into all these spiritual teachings

[0:18] and we' become spiritual Seekers like I

[0:20] was for many years I was like the

[0:22] world's most obsessed spiritual Seeker

[0:24] it's so it's so easy to get mesmerized

[0:27] by all these teachings about pure

[0:29] unadulterated Perfection and the end of

[0:31] suffering and transcending the world and

[0:35] getting into Altered States that it it's

[0:38] so easy to forget that we are also human

[0:43] beings we have these animal bodies we

[0:45] also walk on the earth we are also

[0:48] wonderfully fallible imperfect

[0:51] vulnerable

[0:53] sensitive human beings as much as we are

[0:57] pure and perfect and divine and and and

[0:59] pure conscious and pure awareness and

[1:02] all of that so I think there is a shadow

[1:06] side to spirituality and and in

[1:08] particular my experience has has been

[1:10] with nonel teachings I mean for for many

[1:13] years I was considered to be a nality

[1:16] teacher whatever that means and I kind

[1:19] of had to quit a few years ago to resign

[1:23] from being a nality teacher only because

[1:26] I found that this word

[1:29] nity was confusing so many people and um

[1:33] it was becoming I speak really honestly

[1:35] I feel like it was becoming a kind of

[1:37] cult like I'm nonel and you're not or or

[1:41] like

[1:42] non-duality is the true truth is the

[1:45] absolute truth and all all other

[1:47] viewpoints are are less than uh I felt

[1:50] like it was for many people it was

[1:52] becoming a Dogma so there is a beautiful

[1:56] beautiful truth to the non-el

[1:59] teachings you know on on one level we

[2:02] are and and this is and this is

[2:04] something you don't have to believe this

[2:07] is something that you you can look for

[2:08] you can look for yourself and this is

[2:10] what meditation is great for looking for

[2:13] yourself you know on on one level when

[2:15] we really look what we find is that deep

[2:17] down we are this awareness this again

[2:22] call it what you want the words don't

[2:24] really matter they're all fingers

[2:25] pointing to the Moon you are this vast

[2:29] ocean of of pure awareness unchanging

[2:32] undying you are Timeless you are ages

[2:35] ageless you are pure Spirit pure

[2:38] Divinity uh on the deepest level I am

[2:41] what you are you have your life story

[2:44] and I have my life story but but

[2:46] underneath both we are the same

[2:48] awareness the same presence the same

[2:50] Consciousness the same ocean we appear

[2:53] as separate waves but we are the same

[2:56] ocean so there is a beautiful um of

[2:59] course I'm massively over simplifying it

[3:00] but that's that's the basic truth of

[3:02] nality is is is that you who you really

[3:05] are on the very deepest level is is this

[3:09] pure it's unspeakable of of course this

[3:12] this this pure awareness so the danger

[3:14] of nality and this is what I found over

[3:16] the years is there were people going

[3:17] around who were who were so

[3:20] identified with being pure awareness

[3:22] it's like that had become their new

[3:26] identity that their ego had latched on

[3:28] to this idea that they are

[3:30] pure awareness you know and I'm only

[3:32] exposing this because this is what I did

[3:34] for many years as well I was one of

[3:35] these people I I believed with all my

[3:39] strength and all my heart and all my

[3:40] mind that I am pure awareness I'm not a

[3:44] mind I'm not a body I'm I'm I'm Not My

[3:47] Thoughts I'm not my story I am pure

[3:50] awareness so there's a beautiful truth

[3:53] to that statement but the danger is the

[3:55] danger is and I've just seen this saw

[3:57] this happen in myself I see this happen

[3:59] in non students I've seen this happen in

[4:01] non-dual teachers it just becomes a new

[4:04] resting place it becomes a new Dogma it

[4:06] becomes a new

[4:08] identity I am pure awareness and and you

[4:11] kind of the danger is you fall into this

[4:13] kind of

[4:15] Untouchable place you become this

[4:19] Untouchable pure awareness and of course

[4:21] that's not what you really are deep down

[4:24] you still have all these kind of human

[4:26] feelings and doubts and fears and you

[4:29] still have

[4:31] trauma but you are denying all of that

[4:34] suppressing all of that because your new

[4:35] identity is that you are pure I am pure

[4:38] awareness so it starts off as a

[4:40] beautiful living truth but the danger is

[4:42] that it it just becomes a Dogma it

[4:44] becomes another resting place it becomes

[4:47] um a kind of I'm special thing and you

[4:52] know I I being part of the nonel teacher

[4:55] club for many years I went around the

[4:58] world and I met a lot of these non-dual

[5:01] teachers spiritual teachers Awakening

[5:03] teachers um you know at conferences and

[5:05] hanging out with them and going staying

[5:07] at their houses

[5:08] and um I probably shouldn't say this but

[5:12] I will um you know I was I was mostly

[5:15] very disappointed over the years meeting

[5:18] these these spiritual teachers and and

[5:19] let me explain that I think I had this

[5:21] idea that they were all perfect human

[5:24] beings so it was actually very beautiful

[5:26] to to one by one to meet them and be

[5:28] disappointed because you know and this

[5:31] was behind the scenes spending time with

[5:33] them when they weren't on stage when

[5:34] they weren't being watched all of them

[5:36] Bar None and I met some of the you know

[5:38] the most famous spiritual teachers on

[5:40] the planet most successful most famous

[5:43] they all every single one of them they

[5:45] all had doubts they all have fears they

[5:47] all got triggered

[5:49] sometimes um they all had trauma that

[5:53] they were struggling with um they they

[5:56] all um well I mean there there there was

[5:59] there was a whole range that I saw but

[6:01] you know at the very worst I saw them

[6:04] take out their stuff on their Partners

[6:06] on their

[6:07] students um but look this is not to

[6:11] judge anyone I'm not saying this to

[6:12] judge what what what I'm saying is we

[6:15] are all so deeply human as much as we

[6:19] are pure presence pure awareness Divine

[6:23] we are also human beings we are also

[6:26] infallible fallible imperfect

[6:30] human beings not infallible fallible

[6:34] imperfect human beings um so it was

[6:37] actually a blessing that my my my

[6:40] expectations my my projections one by

[6:42] one were completely shattered and I

[6:44] started to realize oh my goodness we're

[6:46] all just human beings doing our

[6:50] best and it was very enlightening

[6:54] actually and I came to realize very very

[6:57] very

[6:58] deeply that you know

[7:01] we may believe all these things all

[7:03] these spiritual Concepts and ideas but

[7:05] what does it all mean if we're not

[7:07] really really truly living it in our

[7:09] daily lives so that's what really

[7:11] interests me now is really living these

[7:12] teachings in our daily lives and not

[7:15] trying to be perfect not trying to be

[7:17] the most enlightened but

[7:20] really embracing our deep Humanity

[7:23] embracing our imperfections embracing

[7:25] our doubts these aren't shameful things

[7:27] things we need to hide you know with

[7:30] these spiritual teachers I met you it's

[7:31] like you know some of them bless them

[7:33] were really

[7:35] open uh about their imperfections about

[7:38] their doubts about their things they

[7:40] were still struggling within their lives

[7:41] the relationship conflicts and dramas

[7:44] that they had problems with with family

[7:46] that they had um um and some of them

[7:49] weren't some some of them you know no

[7:52] matter what you said they were just

[7:54] pretend to be perfect and oh I never

[7:56] suffer I never feel pain I never feel

[7:58] doubt I never feel anger that's all ego

[8:01] that's all illusion blah blah blah blah

[8:03] blah blah blah but you know you know we

[8:05] we defend ourselves in so many ways

[8:08] don't we so again this isn't to judge

[8:10] anyone you know I've I've been just like

[8:12] that I was one of them I you know I I've

[8:14] talked about this many times for years I

[8:16] believed I was the most perfect human

[8:18] being on the planet I believed I was the

[8:20] most enlightened human being on the

[8:22] planet I believed that I had no

[8:24] egoo the the that I was pure awareness I

[8:28] was

[8:28] Untouchable uh

[8:30] and I had truly truly truly truly

[8:32] realized that and everyone else hadn't

[8:35] so it was it was ironic you know in the

[8:37] name of non Duality I was separating

[8:39] myself from everyone else it was

[8:41] actually very very

[8:44] dualistic so um yeah this is just this

[8:47] is just to remind to remind you that

[8:50] it's you know it's okay to

[8:53] be imperfect and and human and and

[8:56] struggle and spirituality non duality

[8:59] andl whatever you want to call it it's

[9:01] not about it's not about eradicating all

[9:03] of our human

[9:05] vulnerability it's about um giving

[9:08] ourselves deep deep deep permission

[9:10] Moment by moment to be beautifully

[9:12] wonderfully human and and sensitive and

[9:15] vulnerable to make

[9:17] mistakes um to screw up sometimes to

[9:21] forget who we are sometimes to to you

[9:25] know have have wounds that hurt and to

[9:29] learn to turn towards those instead of

[9:31] pretending that we're perfect and

[9:32] pretending that we have no wounds and

[9:34] pretending that we are pure awareness

[9:37] and pretending that the the body isn't

[9:39] real all of these con they're all just

[9:41] Concepts they're all just Concepts

[9:45] and what what I've learned is the the

[9:47] true freedom and the true joy and the

[9:49] true peace has come from letting go of

[9:52] even the non-dual concepts I am pure

[9:55] awareness you know all of that

[9:58] stuff and just surrendering to the to

[10:02] the present moment as it is you know

[10:03] letting myself be imperfect there's been

[10:06] such relief and joy in just allowing

[10:09] myself to be imperfect and ironically

[10:12] and

[10:12] paradoxically that's where you find the

[10:15] true

[10:16] non-duality which is not at war with

[10:19] Duality it's not opposed to the

[10:21] appearance of Duality it doesn't say oh

[10:24] Duality is Just an Illusion you know

[10:26] human stuff is just an illusion it's

[10:28] less than there's no superiority in it

[10:30] it's it's the

[10:32] ocean not at war with its waves not

[10:34] rejecting its waves not saying oh all my

[10:37] waves are an illusion or trying to get

[10:38] rid of all of its waves none of that

[10:41] it's the ocean deeply in love with all

[10:44] of its waves embracing all of its waves

[10:46] at one with all of its waves ultimately

[10:49] the ocean is not separate from it is its

[10:51] wav so nonduality

[10:54] ultimately is not separate from the

[10:57] appearance of Duality it's it's all one

[10:59] movement so then that's why I had to

[11:01] quit that's why I had to quit as a

[11:02] non-el teacher it didn't make any

[11:05] sense you know so these days I'm just so

[11:08] deeply in love more than ever more than

[11:11] ever with our wonderful fleshy earthy

[11:14] muddy

[11:16] sensual uh imperfect

[11:19] vulnerable

[11:21] Humanity with our beautiful doubts with

[11:24] the mistakes that we make you know are

[11:26] trying bless us all we try so hard we

[11:29] try so hard to do it right we CH try so

[11:32] hard to be good to be to be all these

[11:35] things and um for me you know my i' I

[11:40] found spirituality spirituality not not

[11:43] separate from the world non-duality not

[11:46] separate from Duality but but deeply in

[11:49] infusing my my Divinity deeply

[11:53] infuses the Earth it's there in a in a

[11:57] in a dog poo on the pavement it's there

[11:59] in the face face of my child in face of

[12:01] my my partner it's there in a cloud in a

[12:03] blade of

[12:04] grass it's it's there in a tree it's

[12:07] it's there in the the sound of the cars

[12:08] beeping their horns outside it's here in

[12:10] the body in the flesh in the in the in

[12:14] the joy and the sorrow and the boredom

[12:16] and and the clarity and the

[12:18] doubt in all of it all of it it's all

[12:23] sacred it's all

[12:25] sacred and

[12:27] um so I just wanted to make this video

[12:29] about

[12:30] the just pointing out the the shadow

[12:34] side

[12:35] of spirituality or the shadow side of

[12:38] nality is that the the danger is we

[12:41] become less than human we forget our

[12:44] Humanity we become very very serious and

[12:46] and nality becomes a new dogma and we

[12:50] start pretending to be perfect and that

[12:52] becomes the goal is being perfect and

[12:55] never

[12:56] suffering and and then we we just end up

[12:58] becoming cold and robotic and it's it's

[13:02] exhausting and we do damage to each

[13:04] other because when we forget our own

[13:05] deep Humanity we we forget the Deep

[13:08] Humanity of the one who's in front of us

[13:09] so the more we can fall in love with our

[13:11] own deep

[13:13] humanity and and and and and open to our

[13:17] wounds and and and admit to our doubts

[13:20] and our fears then we can more deeply

[13:23] meet the one in front of us and how very

[13:26] paradoxical we're one but we're not the

[13:28] same as as as you two sang in their song

[13:31] one we're one but we're not the same we

[13:33] are we are all the

[13:35] ocean but at the same time we are these

[13:37] unique waves these unique expressions of

[13:40] the ocean and I think sometimes the

[13:42] danger with nality is that we we become

[13:45] so mesmerized by our

[13:47] sameness We're All Pure awareness that

[13:49] we end up missing or dishonoring or at

[13:51] worst discounting or Worse

[13:55] shaming our wave likee nature shaming

[13:59] our

[14:00] differences shaming our

[14:02] individuality our Humanity so this video

[14:05] is really a a

[14:07] call to forget all the concepts about

[14:10] nality and just let yourself fall in

[14:13] love with your deep humanity and there I

[14:16] there I believe you'll find the the true

[14:19] um nality the true the true spirituality

[14:21] and we don't even need to use those

[14:23] those

[14:24] words the real Miracle is not to walk on

[14:28] water

[14:30] the image of perfection the real

[14:32] Miracle is to walk on the earth thank

[14:36] you for listening if this video has been

[14:37] helpful anyway um feel free to subscribe

[14:40] uh to my channel I'll be making more

[14:42] shortish shortish videos like this in

[14:45] the future lots of love to you

No—non-duality points to something real about consciousness and interconnection. The danger lies in making it dogmatic, using it to deny human emotions and trauma, or allowing the ego to latch onto 'pure awareness' as a new identity. The teaching becomes harmful when it's used to transcend humanity rather than integrate it.
Often because their identity has become fused with the teaching that enlightenment means being untouchable and beyond human struggle. Admitting doubts feels like contradicting the whole path they've built. It's a form of spiritual bypassing—using spiritual concepts to deny the actual human vulnerabilities that still exist in their nervous system and relationships.
Absolutely. The idea that awakening means being free from all human difficulties is a myth that creates shame and denial. Even teachers who've deeply realized non-dual truth still navigate conflict, triggers, and relational challenges. The real work is learning to show up to those challenges with presence and compassion rather than pretending they don't exist.
Transcending ego doesn't mean becoming a perfect being without doubts or fears—it means recognizing those patterns without being controlled by them. Denying humanity means using spiritual concepts to suppress actual feelings and relational struggles. True integration meets both the vastness of awareness AND the validity of human experience.
Stay grounded in daily life. Ask yourself: Are my teachings changing how I actually show up in relationships? Can I be honest about my doubts and struggles? Do I use spiritual concepts to avoid feeling difficult emotions? The measure of any practice is whether it makes you more present, more honest, and more capable of genuine connection—not how transcendent your experiences are.
It means recognizing that spirituality isn't about escaping into some realm of pure awareness but about fully inhabiting your life right now—your body, your relationships, your doubts, your humanity. The miracle isn't transcendence; it's presence. It's falling in love with the sacred ordinariness of being alive in a human form.
Yes—that's actually the mature integration of the teaching. Yes, on the deepest level we're all expressions of the same consciousness, but you're also a unique individual wave with particular experiences and expressions that matter. True non-duality doesn't erase individuality or vulnerability; it includes it and honors it.
