Slow Down to Speed Up: Online Hatha Yoga, Explained

Annemaree Rowley's introduction to her online Hatha yoga series runs just under three minutes, and it is nearly all voice. In that short span she makes an argument that cuts against the way most of us were taught to measure productivity: that slowing down does not drain your power, but restores it. She frames the series, called Cool, Calm and Collected, as a set of deeply restful practices open to anyone, with nine short sequences and a fifteen-minute yoga nidra session that together make up a full class of roughly an hour and a quarter. The premise is simple, and it deserves a closer look than a three-minute intro gives it.

What is Cool, Calm and Collected, and who is it for?

The series is built around classical Hatha yoga, the branch of yoga most associated with postures and breath. Rowley describes it as an online practice that she hopes will "assist others to lead a more fulfilling serene and purposeful life." The structure is modular. The nine sequences are each short enough to fit a busy schedule, and they can be done one at a time or strung together into a single session. The deep relaxation at the end is yoga nidra, a guided practice of lying still and withdrawing attention from the body and the day, which is a useful thing to have in a series meant to calm people down.

Rowley is explicit about her audience, and she names it broadly. At 0:46 she says that "people from all walks of life, ages, disposition, shapes and sizes can do yoga." She gives three examples that would be hard to serve in a conventional studio: young parents who cannot leave the baby, executives who cannot leave the office, and people who are ill and need to practice privately at home. The description adds that no experience is needed, and that the series suits beginners as well as people refreshing an established practice. In the transcript she also credits her teacher, whom she names as Shanti, with a saying she repeats: that you can do yoga "from the cradle to the grave."

Does slowing down really make you more effective?

This is the claim at the heart of the video, and Rowley states it directly. "Many believe that when you slow down you lose your power and punch to operate effectively," she says, "when in fact the opposite is true." Her list of what changes when a person is cool, calm and collected is worth reading in full: they are, in her words, "far more effective productive efficient creative confidence and much more aware." The point is not that rest is pleasant. It is that a mind operating from a settled place makes better decisions and notices more than one running on adrenaline.

That is a claim practitioners across many traditions have made, and it is easy to nod along to and then forget. What Rowley adds is a practical sequence for testing it. Her series asks you to slow down on purpose, in a defined container, and then notice what happens to your attention on the other side. The invitation, as she frames it, is to "learn to slow down, to be still, calm your mind, to breathe with ease, to expand your heart, to be kind to yourself and kind to all others." Those are not abstract virtues in her telling. They are the working parts of the practice.

What does slowing down do for sleep, the body, and fear?

Rowley lists specific effects, and they are the kind a reader can check against their own experience. She says that "sleeping comes more easily," that "body aches dissolve," and that "fear dispel[s] and anxiety goes away." She is not offering a clinical promise, and it would be a mistake to read her as one. What she is describing is what regular stillness tends to feel like from the inside: the body loosens, the sleep-wake cycle steadies, and the mind stops rehearsing worst cases.

The remedy she proposes is withdrawal, not escape. "In this world of busyness and mayhem," she says, "we need to withdraw a little, go deep within to that place of quiet, for all knowledge resides and serenity reigns." The phrase "withdraw a little" matters. She is not asking anyone to leave their responsibilities or their families. She is asking for a few deliberate minutes a day in which the outer noise is set down, which is the entire design logic of a short-sequence series.

Why does the format matter as much as the message?

A class built in nine parts is an unusual choice, and it reflects the same idea as the message. Most people do not fail at yoga because they lack commitment. They fail because a ninety-minute session is too large to fit a Tuesday. By separating the practice into short, independent pieces that can be combined or taken singly, Rowley makes the commitment smaller and more repeatable. Her description calls the full set "a full 1¼ hour class," but the design lets a reader begin with five minutes and build from there.

The video also teaches by example. Its tone is unhurried. The sentences are plain, the pacing is even, and the speaker never raises her voice to sell the idea. In a feed full of urgent calls to optimize your morning, that restraint is itself the argument.

Where to go from here

If the three minutes left you curious, start with the thing Rowley asks for first: a small, specific act of slowing down. Pick one of the nine sequences, or the fifteen-minute yoga nidra, and treat it as an experiment rather than a discipline. Notice what your attention does afterward, whether you sleep differently that night, and whether the next decision you make feels clearer. Rowley's claim is that you will find more power in stillness than you expected. The only way to check is to sit with it for a while.

The video has been viewed about 3,200 times since its December 2013 upload, which means it has found a small, steady audience rather than a viral one. That modest reach suits the material. This is a quiet piece of teaching meant to be done, not just watched.

It is a series of online Hatha yoga sequences made up of nine short individual sequences and a fifteen-minute yoga nidra deep relaxation session. Combined, they form a full class of about an hour and a quarter, and each piece can also be practiced on its own.
No. The series description states that no yoga experience is necessary and that it is designed for beginners as well as people who want to refresh an existing practice. Rowley also says people of all ages, body types and walks of life are welcome.
Yoga nidra is a guided deep relaxation practice in which you lie still and withdraw attention from the body and daily concerns. Rowley includes a fifteen-minute session as the closing piece of the series, giving the sequences a restful finish.
Rowley argues that it can. She says many people believe slowing down costs you power, but that people who are cool, calm and collected are more effective, productive, efficient, creative, and aware. The video presents this as her view and a reason to try the practice, rather than as a measured study result.
In the video, Rowley says that sleep comes more easily, body aches dissolve, and fear and anxiety ease with regular practice. These are her descriptions of what she has observed and what she invites viewers to test, not clinical promises, so anyone with a medical condition should check with a healthcare provider.
The nine sequences are described as short, and the series is designed so they can be done independently or combined. The full set adds up to about an hour and a quarter, which makes it practical for people who cannot attend a studio, such as parents or people with busy work schedules.
