[0:06] I wanted to talk to you about this great
[0:08] teacher and about my retreat which um I
[0:12] did for about three or four days I
[0:14] stayed kind of really deep in these
[0:16] practices around this great teacher
[0:19] named Shanti
[0:21] DEA now Shanti DEA wrote one of the most
[0:26] important texts in the whole of the
[0:28] Buddhist tradition
[0:30] all of the great Traditions rather it's
[0:33] Zen or Tibetan Buddhism or Thailand or
[0:37] anywhere in the world this text is
[0:41] beloved and this particular teacher is
[0:44] one of the most important and beloved
[0:46] teachers okay and I wanted to share a
[0:49] little bit about his life and then share
[0:51] a little bit about the co the core of
[0:54] what he was teaching because his book
[0:57] that he wrote was published in the 8th
[1:00] century in Northern India so just
[1:03] imagine that we're in what the 21st
[1:05] century so this book has been carried
[1:09] since the 8th Century ancient India
[1:13] right and it was written down at a
[1:15] college called Nanda University which
[1:18] was a very very famous college where a
[1:21] lot of great yogis and Scholars and and
[1:26] people who are
[1:27] practicing
[1:29] Awakening this is is the key
[1:32] Awakening and what are the paths what
[1:36] are the mechanisms toward Liberation you
[1:39] know because that's the road that we're
[1:41] we're traversing right now what is
[1:44] freedom what is real freedom I don't
[1:47] want that temporary Freedom anymore
[1:50] right the freedom of a nice meal the
[1:53] freedom of a short vacation I want
[1:56] something that's
[1:58] lasting right what is what does real
[2:01] freedom mean and so these are what these
[2:03] Scholars were debating where's the end
[2:06] of suffering right where's the end of
[2:08] suffering found in the midst of these
[2:11] tsunamis of greed hatred and delusion
[2:13] what is Ultimate
[2:15] Refuge right what is lasting refuge and
[2:19] these were the questions that I've been
[2:21] grappling with in the midst of the great
[2:24] turning right now because not only it's
[2:26] like where is my own Refuge but how do I
[2:30] provide that for others what are what
[2:33] are the paths that we have available and
[2:36] so a lot of us we go back in order to go
[2:39] forward we look at these texts and one
[2:42] thing about me and that my friends know
[2:44] is that I love to study it's something
[2:47] that I've done since I was a child even
[2:49] when I was six years old do you know I
[2:52] had a memory I was talking to my mother
[2:54] my first self-help book was a book by
[2:57] Wayne Dyer I was in the fourth grade it
[3:01] was called real magic and I remember
[3:04] actually trying to meditate because I
[3:06] was at home from school my mother was
[3:09] always at work I was sick that day and
[3:12] she had taken it from the library you
[3:14] know rented at the library and I
[3:16] remember being like this is a very
[3:17] important book and sitting down reading
[3:19] it all day I didn't know what it was
[3:22] about but I liked it and I remember even
[3:25] trying to meditate on her bed counting
[3:27] down from 10: to 1 and I was like wow
[3:30] this is really hard not to think about
[3:33] things and I was trying even then to
[3:36] make sense of the suffering in my own
[3:38] family so this topic of suffering and
[3:42] Liberation this is the real heart's
[3:45] journey the Heart Wants to Be Free right
[3:49] the heart is boundless right it's
[3:51] infinite and so it longs to be free and
[3:55] it knows the way to
[3:57] Freedom so that's why love the Buddhist
[4:01] tradition and I I love all Traditions
[4:03] but I like some way that Buddha talked
[4:06] about the path because it's so laid out
[4:10] it makes sense but I also love the babad
[4:13] Gita as many of you know I'm going to be
[4:15] giving a series of talks on the Baba
[4:17] Gita because that text is also
[4:21] incredible and it starts with Arjuna and
[4:23] Krishna on a battlefield that's where
[4:26] the whole text opens up and arjuna's
[4:29] having to to fight his people that are
[4:32] against him and they're on a battlefield
[4:34] but God is there and the whole text is
[4:37] this dance of this battlefield moment so
[4:40] that also feels very relevant to right
[4:43] now right so so I encourage you that we
[4:47] go and we look at these ancient texts
[4:49] and we start thinking about the messages
[4:51] of what they're teaching us so Shanti
[4:55] DEA was this incredible teacher from the
[4:58] 8th century and he had a life very
[5:01] similar to the seda's life he was born
[5:04] to a very wealthy family in Northern
[5:06] India the highest class of people you
[5:10] know there was that cast system always
[5:12] going he was like the highest Brahman
[5:14] and he was the heir to a throne in a
[5:18] dynasty and they say that on the night
[5:21] before he was going to get married Tara
[5:24] came to him and said
[5:26] run don't even get married and get in to
[5:30] this Palace life and politics and run
[5:34] and then they also say that as his
[5:37] mother came to give him a ceremonial
[5:39] bath she scalded him with hot water and
[5:42] he said why are you scalding me and she
[5:45] said if you think this hurts try being
[5:47] the king and she also encouraged him run
[5:51] and so they he left he left in the
[5:54] middle of the night took off right
[5:56] before all his enthronement and all
[5:58] these things are and you know all of
[6:00] that stuff before the job started you
[6:04] know that feeling we get when we get a
[6:05] job we're like maybe I don't know I
[6:07] should run away from this and before we
[6:10] get locked down into the program right
[6:14] and so he runs away and he he ends up at
[6:18] this
[6:19] incredible college and the college was
[6:22] all monastics practicing it was all a
[6:25] college of male monastic
[6:27] practitioners and he begins to practice
[6:31] there but here's the funny part about
[6:34] the story he's practicing there but
[6:37] everybody turns against him because he
[6:39] never goes to classes and they start
[6:42] saying he never even studies and they
[6:45] said he mastered these Arts of sleeping
[6:47] eating and going to the bathroom right
[6:51] they would tease him they would say
[6:52] that's all you ever do here you know
[6:54] you're not a real scholar so one day
[6:57] they asked him to give a talk and so
[7:00] they all underestimated him I guess
[7:02] that's the that's the uh the funny thing
[7:05] about this right so they say that they
[7:08] asked him to give a talk and they were
[7:10] teasing him they thought they were going
[7:11] to humiliate him a little bit right oh
[7:14] he hasn't studied anything sure you give
[7:16] the big talk tell us everything you know
[7:18] and so he sits up on the stage and for
[7:21] the next hours he gives this particular
[7:25] teaching called the bodh SATA way of
[7:29] life and this teaching is reported for
[7:32] those who read it those who study it is
[7:35] the direct path to Liberation it's the
[7:38] mind of a Buddha it's the mindset so
[7:41] this book that they said as he was
[7:44] giving the talk they they wrote that he
[7:46] was elevating in the air as he was
[7:48] ending it right he was elevating in the
[7:51] air and then at the very last word they
[7:54] just heard the sound and he
[7:57] disappeared and so talk about like a
[8:00] drop moment right he
[8:02] disappears and they all went oh my gosh
[8:05] and they had been writing it down and
[8:07] then later some Scholars from the school
[8:09] they went and found him in a cave and
[8:11] asked him is this exactly the text and
[8:14] that particular text has been translated
[8:16] all the way to this day and so the bodh
[8:20] for way of life as its core message
[8:24] which is what I want to bring to you all
[8:26] tonight for those of you who have not
[8:28] studied this great text is
[8:30] complicated it is it's been translated
[8:33] and so it is it it it's vast I've read
[8:37] it probably 400 times and now I went
[8:40] back to the beginning again and that's
[8:43] the kind of repetition that we need
[8:46] right
[8:47] now these voices and this tsunami is so
[8:52] distracting it's so allc consuming and
[8:56] it's so
[8:57] delusional that we naturally when we're
[9:00] standing in front of it for five minutes
[9:02] we forget all the things we know right
[9:04] it's such a it's just like a
[9:06] rainstorm right and if you go out in the
[9:09] rain no matter how many umbrellas you
[9:11] have and how many uh you know jackets
[9:14] and waterproof boots you have you get
[9:16] wet still there's a certain amount of
[9:19] you that will get wet just from the rain
[9:22] coming down so hard so no matter what we
[9:25] do we're going to get wet by this this
[9:28] storm it's it's get our clothes right it
[9:31] gets in our gets in our bones so we have
[9:34] to constantly be kind of drying it out
[9:36] shaking it out putting it outside do
[9:40] people know what I mean by this right we
[9:42] have to constantly kind of combat the
[9:45] energy of that and so this particular
[9:49] text lays out the practice of
[9:53] Awakening and how to practice because
[9:57] what we really want to do with our heart
[9:59] medit is we're not just sitting around
[10:01] for thousands of years just doing meta
[10:03] for ourselves there's a moment where
[10:06] we're activated out into the world right
[10:09] this isn't meant to be a practice that
[10:11] we do for just ourselves alone right we
[10:14] will we're doing it now but eventually
[10:17] that's the love that carries us out into
[10:19] the world right to be of service to
[10:23] others without service to humanity our
[10:26] compassion is not really fully complete
[10:29] right we practice so that we can go out
[10:32] and be a light in the world we practice
[10:35] we find our freedom and then we go out
[10:37] and when we're ready we can then help
[10:40] other people we awaken we guide and then
[10:45] we build this is what's going to be
[10:48] needed in 2026 right I feel like first
[10:51] what we're doing is Awakening man this
[10:53] storm is going to go on all year and
[10:55] we're going to just
[10:56] be kind of trying not to get wet go out
[11:00] we have our rain hats on boots you know
[11:02] some of us will be better equipped than
[11:05] others but we stay dry and we awaken
[11:09] this quality that Shanti David talked
[11:12] about the awakened mind Bodhi means
[11:15] Enlightenment and chitt means mind the
[11:19] enlightened mind what is the enlightened
[11:22] mind it's this idea that we become
[11:25] Buddhas not just for ourselves but for
[11:28] the benefit of all being
[11:30] and this is also something I want to
[11:32] share with
[11:33] you is that even though we what's so
[11:36] hard I think for us to grasp and I've
[11:39] been in this tangle with Harriet Tubman
[11:41] over this Harriet and I go round and
[11:44] round and round because she always is
[11:49] reminding me that human beings are so
[11:51] much more powerful than they know right
[11:55] and the way we give up power is
[11:56] believing we don't have any right
[11:59] believing that we're small we don't
[12:01] believe that we have the seed of full
[12:03] Awakening in us we kind of think it but
[12:07] we don't we're like well I have a lot
[12:08] you know all we see is the neurotic side
[12:12] but that's just
[12:14] temporary right those are just habits of
[12:16] mine that's not the true nature of our
[12:19] hearts our hearts are infinite but we
[12:21] don't see that and I keep wondering how
[12:26] it is that we can together see each
[12:28] other's life and and and help to amplify
[12:32] that right how do we begin to see our
[12:36] power in each other cultivate that with
[12:39] a lot of wisdom and Clarity not in a ego
[12:42] way but in in a truthful way that we are
[12:46] all Buddhas and bodh safas that's what I
[12:49] used to love so much about the Dharma we
[12:51] are all Buddhas and bodh safas but we
[12:53] just forgot we're in a state of
[12:55] sleepiness we're in a frozen State we're
[12:58] remembering but this remembering is so
[13:01] hard when there's a tsunami of delusion
[13:04] every second that's telling you to
[13:06] forget that's what is so challenging
[13:09] about this moment for all of us
[13:12] everybody this massive amount of like
[13:15] erasing who we are it's just greed a
[13:17] hatred delusion and and it's raining
[13:20] down it's hard to remember and hear
[13:23] ourselves if our true nature was being
[13:26] Amplified hour after hour just think how
[13:29] easy it would be we' all be like oh
[13:30] right we're all compassionate beings
[13:33] we're here to love and care for each
[13:34] other you don't even hear this in school
[13:36] you know this is something you have to
[13:40] seek
[13:41] out right this is something we we seek
[13:44] out because humanity is in this you know
[13:47] there is a real Tipping Point here
[13:49] everybody right there's going to be this
[13:51] dividing like two tectonic plates right
[13:56] and this side is going to go to that end
[13:58] and this side is going to go to the and
[13:59] at least on the 3D level Consciousness
[14:03] wise so we need to think about the
[14:07] practices of
[14:08] Liberation and Shanti DEA lays out in
[14:12] this book The it's a short book of
[14:15] chapters each chapter grows and each
[14:19] chapter talks about the path of the
[14:21] Bodhi SATA and the bodis Safa makes a
[14:24] vow that they will practice Awakening so
[14:28] that they can be true guide for others
[14:32] right it's almost like I said I'm going
[14:33] to go to medical school and I'm going to
[14:35] study and I'm going to study so that I
[14:37] can be a great doctor and then go out
[14:39] and help people but there's a period
[14:41] where we have to undertake a kind of
[14:44] study and I want to talk about these six
[14:48] practices of the bodh SATA I'm going to
[14:51] mention them here because I'm going to
[14:52] start to unpack them on Tuesday nights
[14:55] for the next six nights I'm going to
[14:57] take on a different aspect of the heart
[15:00] but the practices that we undergo and
[15:03] they call them Perfection practices so
[15:06] we perfect these six
[15:08] qualities
[15:11] generosity ethical
[15:13] conduct
[15:15] patience joyful effort right diligence
[15:20] but a kind of effort that's Joyful We
[15:23] call meditation and
[15:26] wisdom right and they and and what's
[15:28] laid out out in this text is that these
[15:32] six qualities they become
[15:35] superpowers right it's not just the
[15:38] power of generosity but it's the huge
[15:40] power of generosity it becomes a
[15:43] superpower right it reminds me a little
[15:46] bit about like Jesus in the Bible where
[15:48] you know he was like feeding the people
[15:52] jumping
[15:53] into the the river to feed the people
[15:56] fish but then there like a endless
[15:57] bouncy comes out right he can Manifest
[16:01] this huge amounts right of generosity
[16:04] and then we think about ethics how
[16:06] important ethical conduct is right now
[16:08] how that becomes the
[16:10] superpower patience diligence meditation
[16:14] and wisdom right these are all when
[16:18] we're rooting them in the heart they
[16:19] become
[16:21] superpowered so this is the thing we are
[16:23] mixing our hearts we are creating a
[16:26] strong heart so that we can go out and
[16:28] be agents of change in the world we can
[16:31] be a light onto the world we can
[16:33] actually carry a movement forward of
[16:37] love and compassion everybody this is my
[16:41] my dream is to help people together we
[16:44] access this this heart energy that
[16:46] Harriet said fueled her that all these
[16:49] great Masters that dror King that Soul
[16:52] Force right and what we do is we create
[16:55] a Lane right through that cuts through
[16:58] this delusion
[17:00] right and we we open the road up for
[17:02] many beings to come through many beings
[17:06] to take refuge the heart itself is a
[17:09] great light they always talk about in
[17:11] these texts it's like the
[17:13] Sun so this Shanti Deva Retreat that I
[17:16] was doing I was practicing and
[17:18] remembering and writing down even more
[17:21] my understanding and studying and
[17:23] clarifying and meditating on it that's
[17:26] what I was doing you take the text you
[17:28] study you you recite and then you pray
[17:33] over it you you you kind of allow it to
[17:36] come come into your body this higher
[17:39] wisdom and and we make vows may I get on
[17:43] the path of Awakening even a vow like
[17:46] this may I heal my heart so that I can
[17:49] be of benefit to other beings that's a
[17:52] beautiful vow that's like an
[17:54] aspirational vow of the bodh Safa may I
[17:57] awaken my good heart till that I could
[17:59] be a light in this world I love that vow
[18:04] right may I awaken my heart so that I
[18:06] may be a light onto others in this world
[18:09] and you don't have to try to do it now
[18:11] you can but what we're doing right now
[18:13] is we're in the Awakening of it
[18:16] Awakening to the true power of the heart
[18:19] right and that we have to see it we have
[18:20] to feel it we have to root down so that
[18:23] when we go out into the tsunami we're
[18:26] not swept up in the flood right that we
[18:28] got everything we need we're walking out
[18:31] and we got a
[18:32] superpowered device surrounding us we
[18:34] have
[18:35] protection you know so we head out right
[18:38] into the storm and we can sail against
[18:40] it and we don't get wet and we're not
[18:42] falling down and we're not getting swept
[18:44] away we awaken our hearts for that there
[18:49] are beings who need our light right now
[18:52] and I think so much about these young
[18:54] people caught up in all of The Madness
[18:58] of of the what these Elders are doing
[19:01] right and the sadness I see in so many
[19:05] eyes and and right now that is my
[19:08] motivation may I awaken my heart and
[19:11] that is what the buddhis SAA way of life
[19:13] is we use our own Awakening and we
[19:17] motivate ourselves with the vow for the
[19:21] benefit of others I will awaken and then
[19:23] we take as long as we need if you need
[19:26] to go to five more years of therapy do
[19:28] it whatever ever it is that you need but
[19:30] you dedicate it to that you dedicate
[19:34] everything to this this this path and
[19:37] and with that it becomes a very powerful
[19:40] doorway we cross over into the energy
[19:44] with the other bod side for us and every
[19:47] action then becomes a blessing every
[19:50] time you need to take a break may I may
[19:52] I pause and rest for the benefit of all
[19:54] beings may I drink this green juice for
[19:57] the benefit of all beings you know you
[19:59] everything becomes like a mantra right
[20:02] every practice you're honing for that
[20:05] moment may I my heart one day fully open
[20:07] so that I can be led out and be of of
[20:10] support to Awakening Humanity again
[20:14] everybody we are preparing for when
[20:18] they're going to you know as we know
[20:19] that this tsunami is going to go on for
[20:21] some time but it will stop and then who
[20:24] will be there we want our Fierce Hearts
[20:27] to be there to pick up the pieces to
[20:30] build new systems right so it's easy to
[20:33] tear down that's easy destroy something
[20:37] right but hard is to build something new
[20:41] based on this love and compassion and it
[20:43] needs The Visionaries and the good
[20:45] hearts of many of us working together to
[20:48] to create this this new world this great
[20:51] shift into something that's life
[20:54] sustaining right that's what we're
[20:56] moving into is the life sustaining era
