Oshun: A Water Chant That Crosses Languages

"Oshun" is a live performance captured for video in which Mirabai Ceiba sings a short, looping refrain about water, washing the eyes and washing the heart, over a band of violin, guitar and sitar. Recorded at the Auditorium Barcelona and posted to YouTube on February 12, 2014, the eight-minute clip has drawn more than 755,000 views. Its power comes from almost nothing happening on purpose: a handful of phrases, returned to again and again, shifting between English and Portuguese while the instruments hold the room open. What follows is a close look at how the piece is built, what the credits tell us about who made it, and why a chant this simple keeps finding listeners.

What happens in the first twenty seconds of "Oshun"?

The video opens on instrumental texture. The first audible words do not arrive until roughly twenty seconds in, when the caption reads "washes my eyes" at 0:20. That delay matters. Before a single lyric, the listener is placed inside a sound field, and the voice enters as one more layer of it rather than as a lead line stepping forward. For a chant-based performance, that is a deliberate kind of framing: the audience is asked to settle before anything is asked of them.

By 0:47 the refrain has its shape, "Wash my heart," and it stays there for most of the running time. The song does not build toward a bridge or a key change that the captions reveal. Instead it deepens. The same few images circulate, and each return sounds slightly different because the context around it has changed.

Why does one water refrain carry an eight-minute performance?

Repetition is the engine of this kind of music, and "Oshun" shows how much a small vocabulary can hold. Read through the captions, the lyrical material is almost entirely water and washing: the eyes, the heart, the rain, "flower of the waters," the instruction to "pull all the waters." At 2:46 the captions render "Flower of the waters, wash my heart," and at 3:43, "Flora as águas," which places the same image in Portuguese a few seconds later.

The craft lesson here is about subtraction. A performer who wanted to sustain eight minutes with words alone would need a narrative or a growing argument. Mirabai Ceiba instead works with a single image set and lets intensity do the moving. Each time "wash my eyes" returns, it lands a little differently than before, because the listener has spent longer in the water.

"Wash my eyes, you will wash my heart." (sung line, captioned at 2:29 in the video)

That line is a good example of how the song turns a command into a kind of promise. The phrasing is simple enough to be sung by anyone in a room, which is part of what makes chant work as a shared practice rather than a performance for spectators.

How do the languages move through the song?

The most striking structural choice in "Oshun" is the crossing between English and Portuguese. The early verses sit almost entirely in English. Around 1:07 the captions show "O chur meu coração," a Portuguese phrase, and from there the two languages trade places. By the later section, the captions read "lava meu coração" and "lava meus olhos," which are the same images as the English refrain carried into Portuguese.

Because the captions are automatically rendered and imperfect, some words come through garbled. The transcript reads "olos" where the Portuguese word for eyes would ordinarily appear, and "chou" in a line that is hard to make out. These are artifacts of the captioning, not choices made by the singer, so it is worth listening directly rather than trusting the text. What the captions do make clear is that the song does not treat Portuguese as a translation of English. The two languages sit side by side as equal carriers of the same wash.

Around 4:59 the captions render a short vocal call in Thai script, "เฮ," and repeat it at 5:29. The captions do not translate it, and this article will not guess at its meaning. What it does is change the texture: the song briefly leaves its lyrical language entirely and moves into a sound that works more like a call than a sentence.

What do the violin, guitar and sitar contribute?

The credits name three instrumentalists: Bogdan Djukic on violin, Jesus Mejia on guitar and Leonardo Nieto on sitar. The description does not break down who plays what part, so any claim about the arrangement has to stay within what listening can confirm. What is clear is the combination itself. A bowed string, a plucked guitar and a sitar sit in different acoustic families, and the sitar in particular is an instrument whose sustained, resonant tone suits the kind of held atmosphere this song creates. The effect is less a band accompanying a singer and more a single sustained space that the voice moves through.

Pay attention, when you listen, to the moments when the voice drops out and the instruments carry the pulse alone. Those gaps are where the refrain keeps sounding after the words have stopped.

Who made the video, and how was it put together?

The credits lay out a small, specific production chain. Ismael Joyera directed the video, and the company credited is Inhala Produccions. Moshik Kop engineered and recorded the audio, and Jamshied Sharifi edited and mixed it. The event itself was organized by Shunia Yoga. That last credit places the performance inside a yoga-community setting, which helps explain the room-filling, participatory quality of the song. It was not a studio construction assembled from fragments; it was captured in a live hall and then shaped in post.

That origin is worth remembering when you hear the recording. The reverb, the room, and the small imperfections of a live voice are part of the piece, not noise to be removed.

Why has "Oshun" kept finding an audience?

As of the figures available here, the video has been viewed 755,750 times. A number like that says something about a recording that is nearly all repetition. Eight minutes of a single refrain asks a great deal of a listener, and the people who stay are often the ones who are looking for exactly that kind of sustained, unhurried sound. The video is also easy to return to: you do not need to know Portuguese, follow a plot, or learn a complicated form to enter it. You need to be willing to be washed.

Where to go from here

If "Oshun" has caught you, the best next step is to listen to it again with headphones and attend to one thing at a time: first the eyes, then the heart, then the rain. Notice where the Portuguese arrives and how it changes the weight of a line you already know. You can follow Mirabai Ceiba through her official website at mirabaiceiba.com and on her Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts, all listed in the video description. For the performance itself, the credits name the Auditorium Barcelona and Shunia Yoga, and they are the places to look for more context about the evening the recording came from.

Yes. The captions show Portuguese lines such as 'O chur meu coração' and 'lava meu coração' alongside English lines, with the two languages trading places across the song. Some Portuguese words appear garbled in the automatic captions.
The video was published to YouTube on February 12, 2014. As of the figures provided, it has more than 755,000 views.
Repetition lets a small set of images deepen rather than develop like a story. In Oshun, the water refrain returns with different weight each time, and the listener is drawn further into the same space. The approach suits chant as a shared, participatory practice.
