Nature's Way: Letting a Yearly Theme Crack You Open

It is the last episode of the year, and the recording space is busy. Kat John apologizes in advance for the interruptions: three dogs share the room, including Daisy's boyfriend Teddy, who is staying for three weeks over the holidays. Between the dog updates and a cheerful run through the usual year-end questions (what did you learn, what surprised you, what didn't work out but turned out to be a blessing), she gets to the real subject. Twelve months earlier she had picked a word to lean into, "Nature's Way," and she spends the rest of the episode describing how that word kept working on her in places she had not been paying attention to. The result is a candid account of a practice many people half-attempt: set an intention, then loosen your grip on how it has to turn out. Her video description frames the year as "cracking, openings and widenings," and the episode is worth a close look for anyone who has set a theme and watched it rearrange their life.

What happens when a yearly theme refuses to behave?

Kat John's practice is simple to state. Each year she chooses "a word or a question or something to lean into," and she has done so long enough that her listeners know the routine. The trouble, as she tells it, is that the words rarely do what she expected. The year before this one, her theme was "flourish," and she had finances in mind. What arrived instead was a flourishing in her femininity, and only after that did her finances start to shift, through a new sense of balance. She put the pattern plainly:

"It turns out that I learned something and it's completely different."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (2:23)

The pattern matters because it changes what a theme is for. If you treat a word as a target, a year that delivers something else looks like failure. If you treat it as a lens, the unexpected result becomes information. The theme did not fail to flourish; it pointed somewhere she had not planned to look, and the planning was the thing that needed adjusting.

Why do intentions keep sliding into the areas you ignored?

The video description makes the same observation in tighter language. In earlier years, she writes, she "had hopes for the word and theme I set, often having in mind what I wanted it to do for me." What she found was that the theme "worked its way into other areas of my life that I'd left unattended and didn't give much attention to."

There is a useful idea buried here. A theme that is chosen with an outcome already fixed tends to stay inside the outcome. You pick "abundance," picture a bank balance, and work the problem you already know about. A theme held more loosely can go looking for the things you have been avoiding, and those are often the things that matter most. Kat John's year did not stay in her finances or her work. It moved into her body, her family, and the way she speaks, which are areas she had, by her own account, left unattended.

What does it actually mean to say "show me the way"?

This is the center of the episode, and it is easy to misread. "Nature's Way" was not a plan with a deadline. The description says the aim was "placing greater trust and faith in the great force and allowing it to crack me open where necessary." Within the episode, she describes what that looked like in practice: she stopped specifying the outcome and started asking.

"Show me the way, show me the way, show me the way, show me what you'd like for me to see... bring to me what I'm ready to meet and face and release."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (7:28)

She is explicit that she did not name what she wanted to release. Instead she "parked what I thought I wanted" and stayed in what she calls communication with the natural force. Her description puts the stance in a single sentence: "you do what you gotta do and what is necessary for me to open my eyes and heart."

It would be a mistake to hear this as passivity. Asking to be shown is an active form of attention. It means reviewing your life for what is asking for your notice, then being willing to act on what surfaces, even when it is not what you had scheduled. The surrender is not of effort. It is of the script. For a reader who has tried to control the outcome of a goal and felt the goal slip away, the distinction is practical: you keep the intention and let go of the particular route you had mapped out to reach it.

Why did the body come up before anything else?

One of the most concrete moments in the episode is not about spiritual philosophy at all. It is about shorts. Kat John describes avoiding shorts at the gym or in fitness classes, because she watches the other people's legs and starts comparing her own, imagining they can see the cellulite she is worried about. Then, at a dance class on a hot night, she decided to wear them.

"Last night I was like nah I'm wearing shorts... didn't give a [expletive], afro beats, chucking my booty up in the air and just loving it."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (6:19)

She is candid that this may sound small. She says it felt like a big deal for her, and she connects it directly to the larger shift she was noticing that year: "I'm done giving a [expletive] about how my body looks." The shift is not that she stopped noticing other people. It is that the noticing lost its authority over what she chose to do. That is a useful test for any theme. Growth often shows up first in the small, embarrassing daily decisions, the ones where an old story makes the choice for you.

What old stories are you still carrying, and what happens when you set them down?

Across the episode, she lists the stories she has decided to stop carrying. She names the belief that she must "work like super freaking hard in order to earn money." She names the sense that she is separate from her family. The second one carries the most weight. She talks about her bonus daughters, Ali and Mia, and admits that her ego loves to keep her apart from the family. "This year," she says, "has really shown me that I have such great capacity to love my self, to love my body, to love my life, to yeah love my family like even call them my family."

"My ego loves to battle that one out in trying to keep myself separate from the family."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (5:18)

This is where the theme's "cracking open" becomes concrete. A story of separateness is a kind of protective shell, and the shell is often defended more fiercely than the wound it was built for. Naming the story out loud, to the audience and to yourself, is how the shell begins to give. Kat John does not present the change as tidy. She speaks of tears, of getting emotional mid-sentence, and of needing to pause. The emotion is part of the evidence that something is moving.

What does freed-up energy feel like once you stop spending it?

The episode's most vivid image is financial, and it is worth quoting at length because it captures something many people feel after a long release. Kat John describes the sensation of "free" energy as if she had won the lottery:

"It's like I've won the lottery and I've collected my winnings and I've got all my [expletive] here and I'm just holding them for a little bit. Don't want to spend them right away on, all right, let's spend them on this, let's spend them on that, and then I'm broke again."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (9:45)

She then lists what she means by winnings: "time, energy, life force, head space, heart space, freedom." The image is useful because it names the risk. Freed-up capacity is easy to lose by immediately committing it to the next obligation, the next project, the next demand on your attention. Her approach is to hold it for a while before deciding how to use it. For a reader, that suggests a practical question to ask after any release: where does the energy I've just recovered want to go, and am I rushing to refill the space before I know?

Why does reflection gather at year's end, and does it have to?

Kat John is clear that the end of the year is a natural moment for reflection, and she places it inside a larger collective rhythm. "Depending upon your religion or your culture," she says, people around the world tend to look back and then ask what they want to do differently in the new year. She describes this as "a collective energy," and she links it to shared moments of sadness and grief she has seen in the world. "There is this potency in collectiveness," she says.

"Please know that you can reflect at any time of your life, right? It can be in January, October, mid-year, and you might be like, I don't like the theme of this year, I'm going to change it."

— Kat John, final podcast episode of 2023 (3:56)

That permission matters. A theme does not have to wait for January, and it does not have to survive the calendar once it stops being useful. The collective calendar gives a shared moment of attention, but your own timing is the one that counts for your life. Kat John's own year is a case study: a theme that began as a financial hope became a lesson in femininity, family and love, and she was willing to follow it there.

Where to go from here

The episode does not offer a method with steps, and it would be wrong to pretend it does. What it offers is a set of questions Kat John answered for herself across a year, and they are useful to anyone who wants to try her approach. Consider working through them with a notebook or during a quiet walk:

  • What area of my life have I left unattended that a theme might be asking me to look at?
  • If I wrote down the outcome I am gripping, what would I be willing to let go of to make room for something I have not planned?
  • Which small, everyday choice is my body, my schedule or my habits still making for me out of an old story?
  • Which story about who I am, or who belongs to my life, am I ready to stop defending?
  • When I free up energy, where am I tempted to spend it immediately, and what would happen if I held it for a while?

Kat John's episode is also a reminder that a year's theme is not a contract. It is closer to an invitation, and the invitation can be answered at any time. If you want to hear the full reflection in her own voice, including the moments where she stops to collect herself, the episode is the best place to start. Her closing line, as she signs off to her listeners, is an encouragement to keep doing the work at your own pace, and to take the year's surprises as part of the lesson rather than an interruption to it.

[0:00] it's the last episode of the podcast

[0:04] this year

[0:07] ding I'm gonna take a little

[0:12] break and enjoy my

[0:17] life it's the last episode of

[0:26] 2023 apologies in advance I have three

[0:29] dogs in my space Bailey Daisy and

[0:33] Daisy's boyfriend

[0:36] Teddy we have him for 3 weeks and I

[0:39] never asked Steve for permission when uh

[0:41] we walk along the beach and I meet these

[0:44] people and I love their dogs and their

[0:46] dogs love me and I'm like hey if you

[0:48] ever need someone to look after your dog

[0:51] just let us

[0:53] know we've looked after Teddy many times

[0:55] before and um yes Steve found out that

[0:58] we were looking after Teddy for three

[1:00] weeks over Christmas and he loves him

[1:03] though he loves him he's a very cute

[1:04] little chicken nugget him and Daisy play

[1:07] all day he's pretty cute they're

[1:08] actually taking a rest right now anyway

[1:12] final episode of the year I'm sure

[1:15] you're listening to everyone else's

[1:17] podcast and they're doing the same

[1:19] [ __ ] thing Reflections what did you

[1:22] like about this year what did you learn

[1:23] about this year what you take away from

[1:25] this year what turned out for you this

[1:27] year that was a surprise what didn't

[1:29] turn out for you but turned out maybe to

[1:31] be a blessing all of it

[1:33] right welcome to your next part of

[1:37] adding to the reflection but I'm

[1:39] actually going to share uh I'm going to

[1:41] share about my Reflections so as you

[1:43] know if you listen to this uh podcast

[1:47] religiously um each year I set up a

[1:51] theme for the year in terms of a word

[1:54] you know a word or a question or uh

[1:57] something to to lean into and and the

[2:01] past 12 months uh my theme for this year

[2:04] is was Nature's

[2:06] Way and um it was really kind of playing

[2:11] with every year that I have set an

[2:15] intention or I have said a word out I've

[2:18] always thought it to

[2:20] be always thought that it would turn out

[2:23] a certain way and then it turns out that

[2:27] I learned something and it's completely

[2:29] different you know you know so if I

[2:31] think that I want to flourish which is

[2:33] my year before this one in finances it's

[2:37] I end up flourishing in my

[2:39] femininity and then that might lead on

[2:41] to okay well I can flourish in my

[2:43] finances now because I've got more

[2:45] balance or I've got more this I've got

[2:46] more that but I just thought you know

[2:49] what [ __ ] it I'm going to let nature

[2:51] take take its course and

[2:56] um

[2:58] allow nature or the you know the natural

[3:02] force Nature's Way to step into my life

[3:07] and show me the way and direct me and I

[3:11] got to say oh kind of almost got a bit

[3:13] emotional

[3:15] there um where nature had me focusing

[3:19] this year kind of without me knowing it

[3:22] until now upon reflection this is why

[3:26] end of year is good for reflection and

[3:27] we can reflect throughout the entire

[3:29] year right you know that I bang on that

[3:31] drum

[3:33] but as a collective legitimately all

[3:36] over the world typically all over the

[3:38] world um depending upon your religion or

[3:41] your culture um it is mass people in

[3:45] ending the year reflecting and then in

[3:47] the new year what do they want what do I

[3:49] want what do I want to do different what

[3:51] do I um not want to do

[3:54] anymore uh how am I going to change

[3:56] things right it's it's a collective

[3:57] energy no different to when we were all

[3:59] experienced ing Co it was a collective

[4:01] energy when we all are seeing war in

[4:04] front of us there's a collective sadness

[4:07] when Australia was on fire a few years

[4:09] ago um there was Collective grief you

[4:13] know there is this potency in

[4:16] collectiveness um but please know that

[4:19] you can reflect at any time of your life

[4:22] right it can be in January October mid

[4:25] year and you might be like I don't like

[4:26] the theme of this year I'm going to I'm

[4:28] going to change it you can really do

[4:30] whatever the [ __ ] you want to your

[4:32] life but yeah for me nature had me

[4:37] showing that oh again I want to cry

[4:41] keeps getting me

[4:45] emotional that I

[4:48] have far greater capacity in me to

[4:53] love that's it o sorry I'm I'm having a

[4:57] bit of a moment here um to

[5:02] love

[5:04] myself to

[5:06] love my bonus daughters Ali and

[5:09] Mia for those again who have listened to

[5:12] this religiously you'll know just how

[5:15] much uh my ego loves to battle that one

[5:18] out in trying to keep myself separate

[5:21] from the family

[5:23] um yeah this year has really shown me

[5:27] that I have such great capacity to love

[5:30] my self to love my body

[5:34] um to love my life

[5:39] to yeah love my family like even call

[5:42] them my

[5:43] family

[5:45] um this year in terms of Nature and what

[5:49] it's wanted to what it has shown me uh

[5:54] particularly leading up to the end of

[5:56] this year is like oh my gosh there are

[5:58] so many things that I'm done giving a

[6:01] [ __ ] about like I'm done giving a [ __ ]

[6:04] about how my body looks you know I went

[6:08] to dance class last night it was hot

[6:10] last night and you bet your bottom

[6:12] dollar I wouldn't wear shorts there's no

[6:14] way I like go I don't like wearing

[6:16] shorts to the gym or to a fitness class

[6:19] because I see everyone else in their

[6:21] good legs and I start comparing mine to

[6:23] theirs and I think oh my gosh they're

[6:24] going to see all my

[6:25] cellulite whatever and last night I was

[6:28] like nah

[6:30] I'm wearing shorts you know and I know

[6:32] that sounds may sound really simple but

[6:34] that was like a cool deal for me to be

[6:36] like yeah shorts are going on there we

[6:39] go didn't give a [ __ ] afro beats

[6:41] chucking my booty up in the air and just

[6:43] loving it you

[6:46] know nature showed me just what I'm

[6:49] [ __ ] done carrying and I and you know

[6:51] that when I turned 38 that there were um

[6:55] some episodes there where I really

[6:56] shared that openly you know I'm done

[6:59] carrying the story I've got to do it all

[7:01] by myself done carrying the story that I

[7:04] have to work like super freaking hard in

[7:06] order to earn money um I'm done with the

[7:10] same thing the story of I'm separate to

[7:12] my family and um because this year has

[7:16] shown me that I've really needed to step

[7:18] into my family like a lot a lot a lot a

[7:21] lot which has then helped me step into

[7:24] my greater capacity to love and I guess

[7:28] that's been the beauty of Nature's Way

[7:30] you know I've I've I have

[7:35] parked what I thought I

[7:37] wanted um or even just what I

[7:40] wanted

[7:42] and and you know have been in

[7:45] communication with the Natural Forces

[7:48] Nature's Force Nature's Way and just

[7:50] said show me the

[7:51] way show me the way show me the way show

[7:54] me what

[7:56] you um would like for me to see

[8:00] uh show me what you'd like for me to

[8:04] hear uh bring to me what I'm ready to

[8:07] meet and face and release um so not

[8:13] being specific about what I want to

[8:15] release it's just show me the

[8:17] way show me show me and it's it's been a

[8:22] pretty gnarly year in terms of growth in

[8:25] terms of

[8:26] evolution of self um

[8:30] near now that we're at the end of this

[8:32] year there really is a level of uh I

[8:35] don't know I

[8:39] just stuff that I'm just done with you

[8:43] know um like I can just hear myself

[8:47] voicing what I actually want to say with

[8:50] greater

[8:51] ease and with a bit more bluntness and

[8:54] not being an

[8:55] [ __ ] but just saying that's that's

[8:58] I'm just sharing that and that's it

[9:01] and I don't want to have to constantly

[9:04] be like oh what are they going to think

[9:06] what are they going to say what are they

[9:07] going to think what are they going to

[9:07] say am I going to have their feelings am

[9:09] I going to say this if I say that always

[9:11] contorting myself like a cir to um what

[9:17] do you call them like a I know they're

[9:19] not a gymnast but they I mean they are

[9:21] an artist they are an artist done with

[9:25] that and there's just this I can't

[9:28] explain it there's no words around it

[9:29] it's an energy just like oh I've got

[9:32] some I've got some free [ __ ] now that's

[9:35] what it feels like if I can put into

[9:37] words I'm like who who girlfriend's got

[9:42] some freed up [ __ ] and I'm I'm I'm

[9:45] feeling just how much more I have within

[9:49] me and available and it's like I've been

[9:52] you know won the

[9:54] lottery and uh you know I've I've

[9:57] collected my winnings and I've got all

[9:58] my [ __ ] here and I'm just I'm just

[10:01] holding them for a little bit don't want

[10:03] to spend them right away on like all

[10:04] right let's spend them on this let's

[10:05] spend them on that let's spend them on

[10:06] that and then I'm [ __ ] broke

[10:08] again it's like oh no I just I just feel

[10:13] how powerful these [ __ ] are you know

[10:17] time energy life force head space heart

[10:19] space Freedom oh the freedom that comes

[10:23] with that you know just want to like

[10:25] want to be with that for a minute and

[10:28] hold that for a minute um and man it's

[10:33] like it's got so much energy it's got so

[10:36] much energy to it it's exciting you know

[10:39] it's exciting and I want to I want to be

[10:41] very respectful of them really

[10:44] respectful this year

[10:47] has um Nature's Way has shown me that I

[10:52] want more help you know I want to lean

[10:55] on I want to lean in and I want more

[10:58] support and and I've reached out to that

[11:01] support I've gotten that support and

[11:02] still still you know collecting the

[11:05] right people again like I'm going to use

[11:07] these [ __ ] for finding the right people

[11:11] to work with me to collaborate with

[11:17] um because that feels it's just like

[11:20] again it's Nature's Way ego's way if we

[11:23] look at a ego's way is I can do it all

[11:25] on my own and that leads to exhaustion

[11:28] tiredness

[11:30] um being

[11:31] resentful and then kind of wondering

[11:34] like oh should I even be doing this

[11:36] because it's so exhausting right so

[11:37] that's ego's way almost doing a really

[11:40] great sneaky job of of trying to take me

[11:43] out and uh stop doing this work you know

[11:50] ego's way is or has

[11:54] been um you only

[11:56] have this amount of love to give because

[12:00] if you give too much then you might get

[12:02] hurt you might get rejected you might uh

[12:04] have it thrown back in your face so just

[12:07] give this amount of love because that

[12:08] that's that's enough right yet Nature's

[12:11] Way is oh cat why can't it makes me want

[12:14] to cry I've had such an emotional year

[12:16] with my family you know I really have

[12:20] with Steve and with um my bonus

[12:23] daughters like I've really had we've

[12:25] we've all had an emotional year they

[12:27] have um Steve had and and I have um it's

[12:32] been a real lot to navigate and to

[12:37] have nature show me that you know

[12:40] Natural Forces show me oh come on girl

[12:43] come on you got so much in there gosh

[12:46] you've got so much in there and the the

[12:48] the twists and the turns of our family

[12:51] Dynamics has really like cracked all of

[12:53] that

[12:54] open but yeah ego's way has been um

[12:58] defend protect keep them away you

[13:03] know um ego's way has

[13:07] been uh you know again cap yourself

[13:11] financially cap yourself financially cap

[13:14] yourself with what you're what you can

[13:15] earn and again that comes down to doing

[13:18] things too much on my own and not having

[13:21] help getting tired getting exhausted to

[13:23] the point where I'm like I just I can't

[13:25] even think about talking about one of my

[13:26] services I'm just too busy in the back

[13:29] ground doing stuff about them um and in

[13:32] them you

[13:34] know um and so again Nature's ways like

[13:37] oh we've got some cool ways that you

[13:40] could just open up your eyes and open up

[13:44] your mind and approach money differently

[13:48] um and I've done a lot of healing this

[13:50] year uh next layers of healing with

[13:52] being an honorable custodian of money

[13:55] and now working with my current coach um

[13:57] to look at my business

[14:00] it's just you know what I've I guess if

[14:03] I can see the clarity now you're getting

[14:06] a Clarity you're getting my own Clarity

[14:08] session um I can see that ego's way has

[14:12] been to contain contain and to spend my

[14:16] [ __ ] doing that it takes a lot of

[14:18] energy to contain to hold in to keep

[14:21] small takes a lot of energy to do

[14:25] that Nature's Way has said

[14:31] expand

[14:33] open

[14:36] release you know and that's been my year

[14:41] in many many things um but there sort of

[14:44] the the key things that come to top of

[14:46] Mind as I share my reflections with

[14:50] you and like I said you're probably

[14:53] listening to many podcasts you're

[14:55] probably looking on lots of Instagram

[14:57] posts that say you know reflection

[14:58] pieces or reflection

[15:00] journaling um and I'm sure you're

[15:02] already doing it uh but if you're not I

[15:05] really would take a moment

[15:07] to um lean into it and if you did set up

[15:13] a word or a theme for this year look to

[15:15] see how that theme worked its way

[15:18] through you look to see how it worked

[15:21] you challenged you opened you cracked

[15:23] you made you break you know sometimes

[15:26] the themes that we set up make us break

[15:30] and that's pretty scary you know that

[15:32] can be a pretty scary feeling but again

[15:34] I always

[15:35] say I think we're all seeking to be

[15:38] cracked open and in that cracking o

[15:42] there's going to be resistance there

[15:43] going to be like oh this feels yuck this

[15:45] feels ick this feels yuck this feels

[15:48] ick but once we crack and once a bit of

[15:52] light gets to shine out and also shine

[15:55] in that's when we start to see

[15:58] differently feel feel differently hear

[16:00] differently approach differently do

[16:02] differently be

[16:04] differently uh and that's that is how we

[16:07] legitimately evolve you know we evolve

[16:10] through a lot of Darkness to be fair um

[16:14] can't can't have all the sunshine and

[16:16] rainbows without a a mud pit you know I

[16:19] guess I've spent a lot of time in the

[16:21] mud this year haven't we I feel like

[16:24] everyone's like I'm really done but I

[16:25] think that's the same with every year

[16:28] end of the year everyone's so done can't

[16:30] wait for the new

[16:31] year and uh refreshed energy but again

[16:34] like I said that can take place uh as

[16:37] often as you want um but when it's a

[16:40] collective energy there is some Fair

[16:43] juice with

[16:44] it so I've already um I'm kind of like

[16:48] fighting the word that has come to me

[16:51] for next year I think this is the word

[16:55] um it came came to me a few weeks ago

[16:59] it was actually around my birthday I

[17:01] feel like my year is not January to

[17:05] December I feel like it's going to be

[17:06] birthday to birthday that's just what

[17:07] happened when I turned 38 cuz it just

[17:09] something just clicked and

[17:12] shifted and um yeah the word receive

[17:16] came because I shared about my birthday

[17:19] that I'm a birthday Grinch and haven't

[17:21] celebrated my birthday since I was 30 so

[17:23] for eight years it's a long

[17:25] time um so

[17:29] and I re really did realize how

[17:32] difficult it is for me to just

[17:34] receive and be I'm very you know

[17:37] comfortable like going to someone else's

[17:39] birthday someone else's wedding someone

[17:40] else's this someone else's that when

[17:42] it's my own you know I'm always wanting

[17:44] to like is everyone okay is everyone

[17:46] okay is everyone okay and even actually

[17:47] I was making lunch before

[17:50] downstairs Steve and Mia were there and

[17:53] Steve just said what are you making me

[17:54] for lunch what are you making me for um

[17:57] oh was yeah was kind of like lunch br

[17:58] crunch sorry my dogs are barking just

[18:01] want to make sure he's not eating my

[18:02] clothes no um Daisy stop it Bobby stop

[18:07] stop stop stop being such a cheeky

[18:09] little girl

[18:12] um yeah he's like what are you making me

[18:14] for lunch I said you know what I am done

[18:19] I am done with thinking about other

[18:23] people right now I am thinking about

[18:27] myself and my high

[18:29] protein multigrain bread with my hummus

[18:34] my tomato my salt pepper avocado and the

[18:39] best [ __ ] chili oil on the

[18:42] planet that's what I'm focused on I'm

[18:44] focused on serving

[18:47] myself Steve and me were

[18:51] like Rio guess we'll be making our own

[18:54] lunch

[18:56] today um but yeah I've I've always been

[19:00] the and I you know I think this this

[19:02] runs in my bloodline on my Filipino

[19:05] side also I think it's a fairly natural

[19:08] trait as a woman um to put others before

[19:12] self and yeah since my birthday it's

[19:16] just kind of been like receive cat learn

[19:18] to receive because if you can give that

[19:21] big but you can't receive then what are

[19:23] you blocking what are you blocking what

[19:26] are you not allowing in whether it's

[19:27] opportunities whether whether it's a

[19:29] right person whether it's love whether

[19:31] it's money um what is it what are you

[19:34] blocking but you're so happy to just

[19:37] give it out to the point where you get

[19:38] become so

[19:39] exhausted um you only allow a little bit

[19:44] in so I'm pretty sure that's my word for

[19:48] the year to

[19:49] come and I my ego feels uncomfortable

[19:53] about it there's already some resistance

[19:56] kicking in uh granted

[19:59] but I am up for the challenge up for

[20:02] more mud but anyway I do I really do

[20:05] recommend that uh you take a moment to

[20:11] reflect and um just see what see what

[20:14] you know the year has brought you and

[20:16] like I said if you PL if you planted a

[20:19] theme at the end of at the start of this

[20:20] year how has it worked you challenged

[20:23] you opened you cracked you broken you

[20:26] even um and how are you better for it

[20:30] you know what have you learned because

[20:32] of

[20:34] that that's what I'm going to leave you

[20:36] with but also I'm going to leave you

[20:38] with down in the show notes a meditation

[20:41] a meditation um for you to do to help

[20:43] you reflect on the year that has been

[20:47] and you can plug it in your ears have a

[20:49] journal by your side um and I think you

[20:52] might enjoy that so from me to you thank

[20:56] you for having me in your earballs for

[20:58] for all of this year some of this year a

[21:00] bit of this

[21:02] year the real raw relatable show will

[21:05] continue um but yeah I appreciate you so

[21:09] very much and thank you for your love

[21:13] thank you for your messages thank you

[21:14] for your ratings and your reviews and um

[21:18] sharing this episode um sharing this

[21:22] podcast with your people uh it really

[21:25] means the world that I know this

[21:29] message of authenticity and being real

[21:32] raw and relatable through being

[21:35] authentic through being

[21:37] genuine um is being spread to the people

[21:41] who need to hear it

Kat John's practice is to pick one word, question, or thing to lean into for the coming year and let it guide her attention. She notes that the theme often turns out differently from what she first imagined, which she treats as information rather than failure. The point is to use the word as a lens for growth, not a fixed target.
Nature's Way was the theme she chose for 2023, described as placing greater trust and faith in a great force and allowing it to crack her open where necessary. In practice she stopped specifying outcomes and asked to be shown what she needed to see and release. She describes the approach as trust plus ongoing attention, not passivity.
According to Kat John, themes often move into areas of life that have been left unattended. Her year that began with a financial focus on flourishing moved into her femininity, her family relationships, and her body. A theme held loosely can reveal the places where attention has been missing.
Kat John distinguishes between keeping an intention and letting go of the particular route you had planned to reach it. She describes asking to be shown the way and then acting on what surfaces, even when it differs from the schedule. The surrender is of the script, not of effort.
Yes, according to Kat John, who says you can reflect at any time, including January, October, or mid-year. She explicitly notes that if you dislike the year's theme you can change it. Year-end reflection is a collective rhythm, but your timing is what matters for your own life.
Kat John compares it to winning the lottery and collecting winnings she is not yet ready to spend. She lists time, energy, life force, head space, heart space and freedom as what she feels returning. The practical lesson is to hold that capacity for a while before committing it to the next obligation.
