Love as the Nature of Enlightenment: Direct Path Pointers

Fifty minutes of plain-spoken answers, delivered without a single cushion, can be a hard listen. The Medicine of One video built around selections from Self Love opens on a line that does not ask permission: "The intolerable makes you unhappy." It is the kind of sentence that stops a half-distracted viewer mid-scroll, and it sets the terms for everything after it. The selections are Nisargadatta Maharaj's direct pointers, translated from the Marathi book Atmaprem by Mohan Gaitonde, and they circle a small set of hard questions: what the knower is, why the body feels like the self, why fear of death arises at all, and what it means that enlightenment, as the video frames it, is love. This piece works through those ideas as a standalone guide, so that a reader who never presses play can still follow the argument, test it, and decide what to do with it.

A caveat on the source. The English is a translation, and the transcript carries a few garbled terms, so where the wording is unclear this article leans on the clearest lines and says so rather than guessing at the original.

What is the witness, and why does it come before everything?

The opening pointers are about perception. Everything visible, the teacher says, falls within the category of things that can be perceived. That sounds like a truism until he turns it around: "What cannot be perceived perceives everything?" The question points at the one thing you never observe as an object, the awareness in which objects appear. A few lines later comes the sharper version: "The seer has to be there even to see nothing." Even the experience of emptiness, of zero, requires someone who knows it.

This is the core move of the whole teaching. Nisargadatta is not asking you to adopt a belief. He is asking you to notice that every experience you have, every thought, sensation and memory, is known by something that is not itself an experience. Around the twelve-minute mark, in one of the video's clearest illustrations, he uses a dream: if you dream of Rama, the figures in the dream are passing events, and something in you is the witness to all of them. The point is not that the dream is unreal in a trivial sense. The point is that whatever appears, including the waking world, has the same relationship to the awareness that registers it.

From there the pointers ask you to examine the one thing you assume about yourself: "Whatever you know cannot be yourself as you are prior to all that is known." If the self were any object of knowledge, it would be one more item in the list. What you are, on this account, is the ground the list appears on.

Why does the teacher say meditation should end in forgetting?

Most readers arrive with a picture of meditation as effort: a technique, a seat, a timer, a mantra counted on beads. The selections push against that picture in a way that will feel either liberating or irritating. "You must meditate until you forget that you are meditating," the teacher says. "When you forget yourself, the real will manifest." He goes further in the mantra passage, saying the repetition should go on inside you and should happen "without any effort." He compares it to breathing, a process "which begins at birth and ends at death," and nobody has to manage their breath to keep it going.

This does not dismiss practice. The newcomers, he says, are told to repeat the mantra "for developing their worthiness," which places the practice as preparation. But the aim is a state in which practice dissolves into awareness. His most striking formulation is this: "Is it not meditation to be constantly aware that you are awake?" Read that slowly. The test of meditation is not how long you sat but whether awareness of your own being is continuous. He also says that one who has realized all this "will not need any further meditation," and cites Arjuna and Udhava as people who received knowledge directly from Krishna rather than through a long technical apprenticeship.

For a practical reader, the useful takeaway is a question rather than a method: when you are not doing anything, is there still a sense of being aware? Nisargadatta's pointers suggest that this simple, effortless awareness is closer to the thing than any elaborate procedure.

Is the fear of death really an illusion?

This is the section most likely to be quoted, and the one most in need of care. The teacher is not saying the body does not die. He is saying that the fear rests on a mistaken identity. "As long as you behave as the body, there is the fear of death when the vital breath leaves the body permanently." And then, more pointedly: "In reality, there is no death but only forgetting the body identity."

The argument has an emotional logic. If you believe you are your body, you must look to something outside you for protection, which he describes as relying on Atman as a protector from a position of separateness. The reversal he offers is that when you know yourself as "the bodyless consciousness, you see yourself as your own protector." Fear, on this reading, is not a problem to be solved by a better belief about the afterlife. It is a symptom of misidentification.

"The only way to be free of the fear of death is to meditate on your consciousness as your guru. Hold it like holding his feet."

— Nisargadatta Maharaj, Self Love, translated by Mohan Gaitonde from the Marathi Atmaprem, as presented in the Medicine of One video (approx. 2:58–3:10 of the selections)

The same logic runs through the teacher's account of happiness. What you cannot tolerate and cannot avoid makes you unhappy; what you enjoy makes you happy. He adds that the experience of pain and pleasure changes with physical health and the state of the mind. If happiness depends on those shifting conditions, then it is not the stable thing a seeker hopes to possess. The pointer is that real understanding "will realize yourself to be already free of all being and becoming."

Does a crowd of followers prove a guru is real?

The video takes a sharp turn into critique of the spiritual marketplace. "These days the greatness of a spiritual guru is decided by the number of followers," the teacher says. He then asks what happens to that measure if no one is ignorant and no one follows. He notes that the road beside his house carries millions of people, yet only a few gather to listen. "The customers for the truth are not many."

He is pointed about teachers who "attract masses by magic or tricks and who flatter the rich by sweet talk," calling their success temporary because the answers they give concern "the mundane affairs" and cannot give lasting happiness. For anyone who has sat through a crowded workshop and wondered what was actually being transmitted, this is a useful test: does the teaching leave you more available to your own awareness, or more dependent on the teacher's presence?

How does a pimple on the truth become a universe?

The most vivid passage is also the most speculative, and it should be read as a metaphor, not as a cosmology to be checked against physics. In the eternal, the teacher says, "a big blunder has occurred and that is the appearance of I am." Then comes the image: "A pimple appeared on the truth and its pain is our sense of being. From a hole in the pimple a light came out which was called the world. In scientific language the pimple is called as an atom."

The logic runs like this. Before any "I" appears, there is only the undivided truth. The first sense of being, the bare "I am," is the blemish. From that blemish comes the apparent world, with its objects and its duality. The teacher adds that "the feeling of a pain is due to the appearance of self-consciousness," so the discomfort of separateness is the same event as the birth of the individual. The image also explains the smallness he keeps returning to. He cites a verse describing God as having built a house "as small as a sesame seed" and living inside it, and says that consciousness, "as small as a sesame seed," occupies the whole universe. Smallness and totality are not opposites here; they are two ways of describing the same awareness.

"The consciousness as small as a sesame seed is occupying the whole universe."

— Nisargadatta Maharaj, Self Love (Mohan Gaitonde translation of Atmaprem), as presented in the Medicine of One video (approx. 47:14)

What separates knowledge from contentment?

The last thread is the one that gives the video its title. The teacher distinguishes sharply between the knowledge the intellect accumulates and the knowledge that actually satisfies. The first, he says, "is dry and empty as it does not give any contentment." The second "should be able to give contentment like the divine nectar," and that is possible only by knowing the cause of our beingness.

This is where the phrase "the nature of enlightenment is love" finds its footing in the selections. The love described is not sentimental affection for others. It is the quality of attention that rests in one's own awareness and keeps returning there. The teacher's advice is to "bestow special attention" on the self as you would on a person you wish to please, and he suggests that this constant awareness is what pleases the atma. The love is the attention itself, not a feeling layered over it.

The teacher also cautions against treating any of this as a new collection of quotations. "You take help of the quotations in the well-known books of the world, but in reality, you are the knower." The pointers, he insists, are for "your own information and practical use," and they are not to be used as a bargaining chip in debate.

Where to go from here

Start small and stay with one question rather than a whole system. Watch the video's first ten minutes, then ask the question it raises: what is the awareness in which the intolerable appears? You do not need to answer it intellectually. Notice whether there is any moment in the day when attention is aware of itself without effort, the "constantly aware that you are awake" he describes, and let that moment be the practice.

If you want the source text, look for Self Love, the English selection of Nisargadatta Maharaj's pointers translated by Mohan Gaitonde from the Marathi Atmaprem, and read it slowly, a few pages at a time. Read the fear-of-death passages with a notebook nearby, since they are where most readers feel the teaching press hardest. And treat the critique of followers as a mirror rather than a verdict: the teacher is asking whether the truth you are seeking is being sold to you or actually pointed out.

Nisargadatta's own warning, which the video repeats, is that the pointers are only words. What matters is the experience of the one who hears them, and that cannot be delivered by anyone else.

[0:01] The intolerable makes you unhappy.

[0:05] All that is visible falls in the

[0:08] category of things that can be

[0:10] perceived.

[0:11] What cannot be perceived perceives

[0:14] everything?

[0:16] When you say that everything is shunya

[0:18] or zero, can its knower be a non entity?

[0:23] The seer has to be there even to see

[0:25] nothing.

[0:27] You must meditate until you forget that

[0:30] you are meditating.

[0:32] When you forget yourself, the real will

[0:34] manifest.

[0:36] Whatever you know cannot be yourself as

[0:39] you are prior to all that is known.

[0:43] One who has realized all this will not

[0:45] need any further meditation.

[0:49] Is it not? Did Arjuna or Udhava

[0:53] meditate?

[0:54] Did they not receive knowledge directly

[0:57] from Krishna?

[0:59] Let the repetition of mantra go on

[1:02] inside you. That should happen without

[1:05] any effort. The breathing in and out is

[1:08] also a similar happening which begins at

[1:10] birth and ends at death.

[1:14] Is it not meditation to be constantly

[1:17] aware that you are awake?

[1:20] The seekers who have the right attitude

[1:23] realize the self very early. The

[1:26] newcomers are told to repeat mantra for

[1:29] developing their worthiness.

[1:31] Everyone strongly desires to continue

[1:34] one's existence and the obstacles to it

[1:38] expose the elucory or temporary nature

[1:41] of our beingness.

[1:43] The only way to be free of the fear of

[1:46] death is to meditate on your

[1:49] consciousness as your guru. Hold it like

[1:52] holding his feet. As long as your

[1:55] consciousness is available, meditate on

[1:59] it to the maximum extent possible.

[2:03] It is a sin to consider yourself to be

[2:06] an individual.

[2:08] This gives rise to fear. Forget all that

[2:12] you have read so far. The knowledge that

[2:15] is disclosed here is so profound that

[2:18] the practices of the hata yogis and

[2:20] condundalini awakening lose their

[2:22] importance.

[2:24] Every creature is strong or weak as per

[2:27] its body. But is not the consciousness

[2:31] all one and the same? From sex to

[2:34] samadei is an absurd idea far from true

[2:38] knowledge.

[2:39] These days the greatness of a spiritual

[2:41] guru is decided by the number of

[2:44] followers.

[2:45] But in case no one is ignorant and there

[2:48] are no followers, will that guru be

[2:52] considered as great? The road adjacent

[2:55] to this house where I stay is used by

[2:58] millions of people but only a few

[3:00] assemble here to listen to me. The

[3:03] customers for the truth are not many.

[3:07] The pseudo gurus who attract masses by

[3:11] magic or tricks and who flatter the rich

[3:14] by sweet talk are only a temporary

[3:16] success.

[3:18] The questions answered by them are only

[3:21] about the mundane affairs

[3:24] offering temporary solutions.

[3:26] They cannot give lasting happiness.

[3:30] The worldly customs and traditional

[3:32] religions are only human tendencies.

[3:36] Your opposite is total tranquility.

[3:40] It is ignorance to not know our true

[3:42] nature

[3:44] with the beginning of body identity. One

[3:47] forms opinions as per one's liking. The

[3:51] human beings are proud of the hearsay

[3:54] knowledge. None thinks independently on

[3:56] his own about the facts. What will

[3:59] happen if the breathing stops? We are

[4:03] proud of our religious traditions. But

[4:05] how long are we going to remain to

[4:07] express our opinions?

[4:10] The experiencer of day and night is

[4:13] present within us and he knows his

[4:16] existence directly.

[4:19] If he had any prior knowledge of birth,

[4:21] he would have prevented it.

[4:24] Who would enjoy the heat and build of

[4:27] the womb? It is a blessing that in the

[4:30] womb the consciousness is dormant and

[4:32] there is no knowledge of anything.

[4:36] There is a general tendency to accept as

[4:39] true all that is heard and seen. When

[4:42] you get disgusted with all that you

[4:44] develop absence of worldly passion

[4:47] leading to renunciation and ultimately

[4:50] to self-realization.

[4:53] The renunciation also means liberation

[4:55] from the worldly existence due to

[4:58] absence of self-consciousness.

[5:02] Then the pain and pleasure lose their

[5:04] meaning. And what are happiness and

[5:06] unhappiness.

[5:08] What you cannot tolerate and are unable

[5:11] to avoid makes you unhappy.

[5:14] What you enjoy makes you happy. Also the

[5:18] experience of pain and pleasure changes

[5:20] with time as it depends upon the

[5:23] physical health and the state of mind.

[5:26] When will you understand the meaning of

[5:28] all this? With proper understanding, you

[5:32] will realize yourself to be already free

[5:34] of all being and becoming.

[5:38] The highest supernatural faculty is va.

[5:42] Hence it can be equated to the sguru.

[5:46] It helps to extricate one safely out of

[5:49] any difficulty.

[5:51] Avoid hurting anybody and be busy in the

[5:55] awareness of yourself.

[5:58] In normal life too, if you bestow

[6:00] special attention on anyone, it pleases

[6:02] that person. Similarly,

[6:06] a really fortunate seeker succeeds in

[6:08] pleasing atma by constant awareness of

[6:11] it.

[6:13] Getting pleased is a sign of its

[6:15] propitiation.

[6:18] Hold on to that due to which you know

[6:22] your existence and that of the world.

[6:25] Your consciousness is the manifestation

[6:28] of adi atma or spirituality.

[6:31] The sum total of the view of the world

[6:33] is ishwara.

[6:35] First is the nyani then the

[6:38] consciousness followed by the world. As

[6:41] long as you behave as the body, there is

[6:44] the fear of death when the vital breath

[6:47] leaves the body permanently.

[6:49] If your guru's words fail to awaken you,

[6:53] there will be the fear of death. In

[6:57] reality, there is no death but only

[6:59] forgetting the body identity.

[7:02] Because you believe yourself to be your

[7:05] body, you consider Atman as your

[7:08] protector. But when you know yourself as

[7:11] the bodyless consciousness,

[7:14] you see yourself as your own protector.

[7:18] Due to whose power or virtue is this

[7:21] body so pure?

[7:23] One who knows that one is the light of

[7:25] atma is infinite, boundless and eternal.

[7:30] One who is prior to the body knows

[7:32] everything.

[7:35] As per the guru's command, one should

[7:38] get established as the consciousness.

[7:41] After realization, your existence will

[7:43] be unlimited.

[7:45] If you have faith in your guru, then you

[7:48] have faith in your own consciousness.

[7:51] Arjuna had full faith in Krishna. Hence,

[7:55] he was liberated just by listening.

[7:58] The consciousness as small as a sesame

[8:01] seed is occupying the whole universe.

[8:05] Have full faith in Parameshwara

[8:08] and be sure of realizing the self in

[8:10] this very life.

[8:12] A nani makes clear his own view which

[8:16] cannot be called as pride. When a nani

[8:19] says anything, it is only to tell you

[8:21] what we are. By yoga meditation, the

[8:25] mind becomes quiet leading to

[8:27] renunciation.

[8:30] What you have heard here is for your own

[8:32] information and practical use which

[8:35] should not be disclosed to others.

[8:40] You can only remember what is forgotten.

[8:44] The everlasting is at the root of all

[8:47] existence which includes all the animate

[8:51] as also the inanimate.

[8:54] The moving is a part of consciousness.

[8:57] In the eternal a big blunder has

[8:59] occurred and that is the appearance of I

[9:02] am and a bigger mistake is our

[9:05] identification with the body. A pimple

[9:08] appeared on the truth and its pain is

[9:11] our sense of being.

[9:13] From a hole in the pimple a light came

[9:16] out which was called the world.

[9:19] In scientific language the pimple is

[9:22] called as an atom. The feeling of a pain

[9:26] is due to the appearance of

[9:28] self-consciousness.

[9:30] A morati verse describes this as God

[9:34] constructed a house as small as a sesame

[9:37] seed and resided in it.

[9:41] All our activities are only to tolerate

[9:44] or to forget our knowingness.

[9:46] Only a rare one amongst millions sees

[9:49] himself separate from that knowingness

[9:52] and remains peaceful.

[9:54] Whatever cannot be described cannot be

[9:57] conveyed to others.

[10:00] All experiences are just words and

[10:03] words. But what is the experience of the

[10:07] experiencer?

[10:09] What you see as the world is your own

[10:11] consciousness.

[10:13] You take help of the quotations in the

[10:15] well-known books of the world, but in

[10:18] reality, you are the knower.

[10:22] You were not aware of your existence and

[10:24] with its appearance. There was

[10:27] consciousness full of all the knowledge

[10:29] of the world's books.

[10:32] That you are awake and alive is the

[10:36] primary illusion. The knowledge

[10:38] accumulated by the intellect is dry and

[10:41] empty as it does not give any

[10:44] contentment.

[10:45] The real knowledge should be able to

[10:47] give contentment like the divine nectar.

[10:51] That is possible only by knowing the

[10:53] cause of our beingness.

[10:56] I ever existed but without knowing it.

[10:59] Now I know it and why and how. Your

[11:03] beingness is itself God. But you are

[11:07] prior to it. When its time is over, the

[11:11] god disappears. But Atma is ever

[11:13] existing.

[11:15] You say that you did not exist aundred

[11:18] years ago. Also, you say that you know

[11:21] your being right now. Can the

[11:23] non-existent know its being? For knowing

[11:28] my presence, I must exist first. The

[11:31] knowingness may go, but not its knower.

[11:35] Currently you believe that you are

[11:37] present in your experience of being. In

[11:41] reality you are the knower of the

[11:42] consciousness in which everything is

[11:45] experienced.

[11:46] How can you be in it? In this world the

[11:51] first witnessing of consciousness

[11:53] happens spontaneously to the knower.

[11:57] The consciousness and all knowing are

[11:59] short-lived but its witness is

[12:01] everlasting.

[12:03] The world is in consciousness and both

[12:06] appear and disappear together.

[12:09] What does the witness lose?

[12:13] Suppose in your dream you see Rama and

[12:15] Krishna.

[12:17] It looks so real. Only later on you say

[12:20] that the waking itself was false. In the

[12:24] absence of space and water, there is no

[12:27] consciousness and no god. Chakraani

[12:31] sage Tukaram says when there were no

[12:35] space in water I existed as the

[12:37] unstained absolute

[12:40] what is filling the entire space is it

[12:44] yourself love if you just witness the

[12:47] consciousness as per these instructions

[12:50] there is no need to do any other

[12:52] spiritual practices

[12:55] while dreaming you have no control and

[12:58] anything can happen in reality. The same

[13:02] also applies to your waking state as you

[13:05] are only a witness.

[13:07] As you imagine yourself to be the doer,

[13:11] there is no witnessing.

[13:13] Since the dream experience is false, how

[13:16] can the gods that are seen be true?

[13:20] Most seekers are not sufficiently ripe

[13:23] to understand the basics that are being

[13:26] discussed here. They are not ready to be

[13:29] able to grasp what is said. Hence they

[13:32] go on wandering from one place to

[13:34] another interpreting meanings of the

[13:36] words.

[13:38] What is it that should become firm?

[13:41] It is that this waking itself is full.

[13:45] Some are proud of having a human form.

[13:48] But what use have they made of that

[13:50] greatness?

[13:52] How did you come to know about your

[13:55] being? Now you know you are and that the

[13:59] world exists

[14:01] in my true state. I am alone without any

[14:05] company.

[14:06] You are taking help of God to have

[14:08] courage to live this life.

[14:11] The help of God is similar to taking

[14:13] help of a stick while walking in a

[14:16] forest. Both serve to make you bolder.

[14:21] In the absence of self-consciousness,

[14:24] how can one plan to be born again? But a

[14:27] mutman is never born.

[14:30] Without self-nowledge, whatever you do

[14:32] is meaningless. And with it, there is no

[14:36] meaning for any action.

[14:39] Whatever can be understood by words is

[14:41] also false. There is nothing true in all

[14:45] this play that is going on.

[14:48] If you develop conviction about what you

[14:51] have heard now, you may put it into

[14:54] practice. If not, forget it. But do not

[14:57] tell it to others. You may get ridiculed

[15:00] for it. This is direct knowledge of

[15:04] one's own being and experience.

[15:06] Your trying to convince others will lead

[15:09] to confusion without any settlement.

[15:12] Only the unborn can say that there is no

[15:15] doing and no responsibility for any

[15:18] activity.

[15:19] Any human being cannot say that your

[15:23] knowingness itself is an illusion.

[15:27] Have I done anything to bring you here?

[15:30] I am only a witness to your coming.

[15:33] The witness is subtler than the space.

[15:37] The activities happen in the presence of

[15:40] consciousness.

[15:41] You are beyond it and its nor. A sage is

[15:45] aware of consciousness without any

[15:48] effort. He is beyond description.

[15:51] You are also effortlessly conscious of

[15:54] the things in the consciousness

[15:57] identifying with the body appearing in

[15:59] it. In this process, the consciousness

[16:03] is totally forgotten.

[16:05] With total absorption in the ornaments,

[16:08] there is no memory of the gold.

[16:10] without which ornaments are not

[16:12] possible.

[16:14] You are prior to the consciousness and

[16:17] you are its knower. You already know

[16:20] that you do exist without the

[16:22] consciousness.

[16:23] The truth is inconceivable without the

[16:27] sense of being or non-being.

[16:30] You have forgotten your true nature.

[16:33] without even identifying with the

[16:35] consciousness you firmly believed

[16:37] yourself to be your body which is

[16:40] entirely composed of the food you have

[16:42] consumed.

[16:44] This has led to mad attachment to

[16:47] relations and possessions.

[16:50] In spite of a short-lived existence of

[16:52] everything including the bunny, your

[16:55] attraction to objects is beyond a sane

[16:58] understanding.

[17:00] As the witness of all this which you are

[17:02] yourself cannot be noticed, you easily

[17:05] identify with the body which is readily

[17:08] available.

[17:09] To use the words of common parlance, the

[17:12] word atman is given to the witness which

[17:15] means I. On waking up, the first thing

[17:18] you notice is space. You notice it

[17:22] because of consciousness,

[17:25] primary illusion and the cosmic

[17:28] intelligence.

[17:30] If you have not forgotten something,

[17:32] where is the question of remembering

[17:34] what is not forgotten at all?

[17:38] You have not forgotten the truth, hence

[17:40] there is no question of remembering it.

[17:43] In the light of a lamp, you may do

[17:46] anything like loving, teaching or even

[17:49] fighting. Is the light responsible for

[17:52] anything except remaining only a

[17:55] witness?

[17:56] Similarly,

[17:58] paramman remains only a witness to all

[18:01] your actions.

[18:03] You will be able to observe this aloof

[18:05] nature and all sadus.

[18:09] The true spiritual knowledge is not of

[18:11] these things but of their cause. The

[18:14] cause and meaning of existence. It is

[18:17] the knowledge of the highest meaning of

[18:19] existence called in Sanskrit as

[18:22] paramarta.

[18:24] Parama means highest and ara means

[18:27] meaning.

[18:29] The waking and sleep states happen

[18:32] spontaneously

[18:33] and the effort to change them can cause

[18:36] problems.

[18:37] A sage is unconcerned with these states.

[18:41] Just as the sun knows no darkness but

[18:45] aman knows no sleep. Due to exhaustion

[18:49] during waking state activities, you need

[18:51] rest in deep sleep.

[18:54] Your waking state is only a speck of

[18:56] consciousness.

[18:58] In spite of this fact, you cannot remain

[19:01] in that state for a long duration.

[19:04] You need deep sleep in which you become

[19:06] fresh to restart your activities.

[19:09] Now you cannot survive without the

[19:11] waking and sleep states. Although you

[19:14] are quite aware that there was a time

[19:17] when you were absent without any

[19:19] problems.

[19:21] The everexistent is the witness of all

[19:24] the present and all that is absent.

[19:28] You must have the knowledge of atma

[19:30] which is your own self. It is also known

[19:33] as the knowledge of Brahma. Then it will

[19:36] become clear that the pain and pleasure

[19:38] are the qualities of consciousness.

[19:42] There are some who claim to be sages but

[19:44] are mainly after amassing wealth. Why?

[19:48] They do not appear to be different from

[19:51] other worldly people. A sage means

[19:54] tranquility and freedom from all duties.

[19:58] There is also total absence of concepts

[20:02] including that of being a nyani.

[20:06] Just as there is sweetness and sugar,

[20:09] self-love is the quality of food

[20:12] essence.

[20:13] This quality is time bound.

[20:16] In order to realize yourself with ease,

[20:20] call your consciousness as God Brahman

[20:23] etc. and increase your courage and

[20:25] devotion.

[20:27] Your consciousness is the seed of

[20:29] infinite universes.

[20:32] Make friendship with this sick quality

[20:35] so that it gets subdued to tell its

[20:37] whole story.

[20:40] Forbid us.

[20:45] You are the same now as you were before

[20:48] birth.

[20:50] You are aware of your thoughts, but you

[20:53] are at their root. How can they control

[20:57] the real you? Always be aware of this

[21:01] and be their boss. You are prior to

[21:04] every experience.

[21:06] Have your stand prior to everything that

[21:08] follows so that your view will be free

[21:11] of all content.

[21:13] Your I am does not indicate existence of

[21:16] any person but of the manifested.

[21:20] If you are an individual, you have to

[21:22] face various problems which do not apply

[21:25] to your being as the manifested.

[21:29] Your true nature is not limited to an

[21:32] individual but it includes all that is

[21:36] manifested.

[21:38] You are unlimited.

[21:41] No problem can touch it. I know that the

[21:45] consciousness was absent and hence it

[21:47] cannot remain permanently.

[21:50] Whatever comes is also bound to go one

[21:52] day. Your consciousness gives rise to

[21:56] your suffering which will vanish with

[21:59] its departure.

[22:01] Here with me there is neither rising nor

[22:04] setting. It is being one with no

[22:06] permanent company of anybody including

[22:10] that of Ishwana.

[22:13] Why to slog in this world for momentary

[22:17] gains? It is foolish to go after

[22:20] something which does not last.

[22:23] You cannot expect anything from anybody

[22:25] as all are helpless.

[22:28] It is the passing of time which controls

[22:31] all happenings of which all are only

[22:33] victims.

[22:35] What you like most receives power only

[22:38] from you to dominate you. The one who

[22:42] dominates may be the husband, wife or

[22:45] even God.

[22:47] This is only for your information as you

[22:50] can neither interfere with it nor make

[22:52] any changes.

[22:54] What applies to me also relates to

[22:58] others whether they know it or not. My

[23:01] dharma does not take into account others

[23:03] opinion.

[23:05] That is true religion which is ever

[23:08] ready and effortless.

[23:11] Just as there is breathing in the body,

[23:14] the thoughts go on flowing in the

[23:16] individual consciousness.

[23:19] It is the function of prana. The mind is

[23:23] as per the impressions on the

[23:25] consciousness in the body which is also

[23:28] due to prana.

[23:30] Prane itself means all movements in the

[23:33] presence of consciousness.

[23:35] The activities happen as per the flow of

[23:38] thoughts. A true seeker accepts only the

[23:42] relevant and urgent thoughts ignoring

[23:45] the rest.

[23:47] The awakening of the six spiritual

[23:49] centers in the spine and the condalini

[23:52] is also the function of prana. And what

[23:56] is your position in all this process?

[24:00] And what control do you have to continue

[24:02] your physical existence as you like?

[24:06] If the intellect becomes mature,

[24:09] attaining the level of ishvara,

[24:12] where is the necessity of further

[24:14] spiritual practices and penance to

[24:17] control the mind?

[24:19] When your personality itself gets

[24:21] involved, where is the need to meditate?

[24:24] You are the same now as you were before

[24:27] your birth. You have not changed. But

[24:30] there is only the appearance of I am

[24:33] which was absent when the body was not.

[24:36] This love of I am is the fundamental

[24:40] concept and the primary illusion.

[24:43] You have to continue your existence by

[24:45] observing a certain timetable

[24:47] [clears throat]

[24:48] without becoming its slave. At the root

[24:51] of any great book is the birth not for

[24:54] the birth connection of its author.

[24:57] Without that there is neither the writer

[25:00] nor the book.

[25:03] Here in my case the birth connection

[25:05] itself has been swallowed.

[25:08] Is this body honest?

[25:12] Many great men, rishies and gurus lived

[25:15] on this earth. But could they make any

[25:17] changes in the consciousness?

[25:20] They could not as they themselves became

[25:23] one with it. Can a part of a river

[25:27] change the rest of the river? The

[25:30] appearance of consciousness is

[25:32] spontaneous and whatever happens is only

[25:35] after that. None has done anything to

[25:38] create the consciousness or to bring it

[25:41] from somewhere. That is the reason why

[25:44] none has any control over it. It is said

[25:47] that God incarnates in order to destroy

[25:51] evil. It appears to be a pre-planned

[25:54] affair which is not so. It is all

[25:58] spontaneous

[26:00] just as the rainy season follows hot

[26:03] summer. When evil crosses its limits,

[26:07] the time is ripe for the arrival of

[26:09] good.

[26:11] We accept all the hearsay knowledge as

[26:14] true for all practical purposes.

[26:18] Rarely do we come across people who are

[26:20] not satisfied until they go deeper to

[26:22] find the truth. They cannot rest until

[26:26] they go to the root of the matter and

[26:28] get lasting contentment.

[26:30] The various names of gods are given to

[26:33] consciousness as per its function.

[26:36] Without consciousness, where are your

[26:38] gods and goddesses?

[26:41] When consciousness is one, why should

[26:43] there be many gods?

[26:46] When all weekdays are due to the sun,

[26:49] all days should only be Sundays. But

[26:52] this is all a play of concepts.

[26:55] As you are a human being with

[26:58] intelligence,

[27:00] is it not important to find out how this

[27:03] consciousness which was absent suddenly

[27:06] made its appearance?

[27:09] There was a time 100 years ago when you

[27:13] existed but without I am. Now you are.

[27:17] How did this change take place?

[27:21] This is the main question which demands

[27:23] your immediate attention unlike all

[27:26] other irrelevant questions.

[27:30] Your consciousness is the god of

[27:32] knowledge or janiswara

[27:34] due to which all your senses function in

[27:38] its light you are able to see.

[27:42] None can subjugate parablaman which is

[27:45] at the root of all existence.

[27:48] No worldly tools or concepts can be

[27:51] helpful to reach it. In the absence of

[27:54] true knowledge about yourself and

[27:56] without proper guidance, you remain

[27:58] happy in the grip of concepts.

[28:01] It is all entertainment and passing your

[28:04] valuable time. The people are mostly

[28:08] satisfied with whatever spiritual

[28:10] understanding they have managed to get.

[28:13] Occasionally certain doubts crop up

[28:16] which do not get any solution since

[28:19] proper guidance is rare to find.

[28:23] Those who are full of desires, how can

[28:25] they liberate you? In this world, no

[28:28] experience is lasting and real. There is

[28:32] no honesty in it. What you believe

[28:36] yourself to be changes with time and

[28:38] cannot be honest.

[28:41] This also applies to all our activities.

[28:44] How can the dishonest nature behave

[28:47] honestly even to consider oneself as a

[28:50] man or woman is unjust and false?

[28:54] This identity depends on the body which

[28:57] is dishonest.

[28:58] Can you point out even a single thing

[29:01] which is changeless?

[29:03] For a sage, all the beliefs of this

[29:05] world are time bound and unreliable.

[29:10] One who does [clears throat] not change

[29:12] with time is a sage. At the root of all

[29:16] existence is a sense of being which

[29:19] itself is unfaithful.

[29:22] Is your consciousness

[29:24] reliable?

[29:26] If not, how can the world which appears

[29:29] because of it be reliable?

[29:32] How can you do anything permanent with

[29:35] your temporary and unreliable existence?

[29:40] In spite of all this, your consciousness

[29:43] is God. That is the great instrument you

[29:46] have which can be helpful in having

[29:48] direct knowledge.

[29:51] With every human form, there is a

[29:54] beginning of knowingness and also an

[29:56] end. Hence every human being begins life

[30:00] in ignorance about the self. This is a

[30:03] general rule for all including sages.

[30:07] Thus every life begins with the question

[30:10] what am I?

[30:12] If you donate anything and cannot forget

[30:16] it, it is a tamas quality which

[30:19] indicates darkness.

[30:21] It is an obstacle in your progress

[30:23] towards self-realization.

[30:26] All your pious actions should be

[30:28] forgotten as easily as you forget how

[30:31] many times you went to the toilet.

[30:34] Krishna says for coming closer to me the

[30:39] company of a sage is more helpful than

[30:41] any other spiritual practice.

[30:44] That holy company dissolves all your

[30:47] ignorance and even all knowledge

[30:49] including the self-consciousness.

[30:53] The disciple of a sage becomes one with

[30:56] Krishna where even I am Brahman

[30:58] dissolves.

[31:00] It is one's greatest achievement to be

[31:04] in the company of a sage. You must chant

[31:08] Jaguru again and again so that the

[31:10] secret of your being will be revealed to

[31:13] you. Then your sense of being will get

[31:16] separated leaving alone your true being.

[31:21] In the self there is neither the sense

[31:24] of being nor non-being.

[31:27] This is the changeless state of a sage.

[31:30] To realize it you must have clear

[31:33] knowledge of that due to which you enjoy

[31:35] or suffer.

[31:37] You are full of worries but its cause is

[31:40] not everlasting.

[31:42] If you want to do anything for yourself,

[31:45] how can you rely on others? There is no

[31:48] honesty in anything or anybody.

[31:51] The truth which is everlasting

[31:54] is destined to become known to the

[31:56] earnest seekers. It needs no publicity.

[32:01] Hence, a sage quietly remains in a

[32:04] remote place. Have full faith in the

[32:07] guru and never get disturbed.

[32:10] Then that which is beyond all words and

[32:13] their meaning will get subdued.

[32:16] Listen to this and remember it always.

[32:20] You are fortunate dear all this. Do all

[32:23] your duties truthfully without getting

[32:25] disgusted. Do not make disgust for true

[32:30] renunciation.

[32:32] The faith in God gives you courage.

[32:36] Once you succeed in knowing what ishvara

[32:38] is, he will serve you in all possible

[32:42] ways.

[32:43] Continue chanting the mantra as long as

[32:46] possible. Always remember that your

[32:48] consciousness is the beat of the guru

[32:51] and your best friend.

[32:54] Remembering these words, sit quietly

[32:56] wherever you are. One who realizes one's

[32:59] unity with the entire existence

[33:03] is always fully protected.

[33:08] I am not the body but pure

[33:10] consciousness.

[33:13] Self knowledge gives full contentment in

[33:16] both mundane and spiritual lives.

[33:20] Your search for self ends there. Then

[33:24] you are no more seeker which you had

[33:26] become because of your urge to know

[33:28] yourself.

[33:30] Our beingness is made of the three

[33:32] states of waking, sleep and knowingness.

[33:36] The nor is beyond all these states. The

[33:39] final stage of spirituality you will

[33:42] come to know that you are prior to

[33:44] waking and sleep. Tell me which uniform

[33:47] will suit this true nature of yours.

[33:51] Every state has to change after certain

[33:55] time. Can there be waking alone without

[33:58] sleep or sleep alone without waking?

[34:02] No. The waking has to go to sleep and

[34:06] the sleep has to wake up.

[34:09] You must meditate regularly and live

[34:11] with the conviction that you are not the

[34:13] body but only pure consciousness.

[34:16] Then the spring of knowledge will start

[34:19] flowing from within.

[34:22] A sincere devotey gives all credit to

[34:24] God for every action and its result.

[34:28] That because of which the body functions

[34:31] is the real devotey.

[34:34] One who stabilizes in pure being can be

[34:37] equated to God.

[34:39] The consciousness which is surrendered

[34:42] to God becomes God.

[34:44] The rejection of body identity means end

[34:47] of Maya and becoming pure consciousness.

[34:51] In traditional language, knowing wrong

[34:54] identification means surrendering to

[34:56] God.

[34:58] Meditation means holding the

[35:00] consciousness by itself.

[35:03] All your knowledge is only in the

[35:06] presence of your consciousness.

[35:09] In the morning when you wake up, you see

[35:12] God as the light of your consciousness.

[35:16] The implied pure meaning of the word

[35:18] guru is my own atma who is responsible

[35:23] for every action.

[35:26] Our consciousness occupies the whole

[35:29] world. A true devotey never accepts

[35:32] being the doer of any action.

[35:35] For ages, God or Paramatman is free of

[35:38] any concepts including

[35:40] self-consciousness.

[35:42] Hence, while in a human form, he needs

[35:45] devotion.

[35:47] His love for devotion is more than for

[35:50] anything else. If nothing else is

[35:53] possible, you should try to remain in

[35:56] pure being. Have [clears throat] faith

[35:58] that there is no God other than your

[36:00] consciousness.

[36:03] Your behavior should be as good as

[36:05] possible and that will definitely

[36:07] benefit the people around you. But your

[36:10] attention should be to your inner purity

[36:14] without any expectations of honor and

[36:16] fame. You should not be proud of being a

[36:20] devotey or a nani.

[36:22] When you donate any sums or do any good

[36:25] work, let it remain a secret. You may

[36:29] use your body for happiness but do not

[36:31] identify with it.

[36:34] Atma is only a seer and not an enjoyer.

[36:40] Meditate as much as possible on the

[36:42] self. When you remain as consciousness,

[36:45] all your bad habits will leave you. Let

[36:48] the body remain or drop. Your urge for

[36:53] the self should always be strong.

[36:56] How do people get interested in visiting

[36:59] this ashum? The inspiration comes from

[37:02] God and only those who are closer to God

[37:05] can come here.

[37:07] You have to be God to be here. But not

[37:11] after you leave this place.

[37:13] With regular long and deep meditation,

[37:18] you will have conviction about your true

[37:20] nature.

[37:23] Presently your cast is consciousness.

[37:28] Ishvara means pure consciousness which

[37:31] is presently in your body. The body has

[37:34] value because of the vital breath. And

[37:37] when it leaves, the body is taken away

[37:40] for cremation.

[37:42] As atma is everywhere, it neither comes

[37:46] nor goes. Can the space in one room

[37:49] travel to the next room? No. Our pain

[37:53] and pleasure are the result of arising

[37:56] from consciousness and vital breath.

[38:00] With their separation, all experiences

[38:03] end.

[38:04] The body is not you or your form as it

[38:07] is your food.

[38:10] If you love to be with your guru and

[38:12] always long for his company, remember

[38:15] that he is within you as your

[38:17] consciousness and he will continue to be

[38:20] present within you as long as you are

[38:23] conscious.

[38:25] As you are the consciousness which is in

[38:28] all living beings, it is a sin to

[38:31] believe yourself as the human body.

[38:35] Your true nature is so ancient that it

[38:38] is prior to even Ishvana

[38:41] who originated from the primary illusion

[38:44] which is causeless.

[38:46] When you get up in the morning, the

[38:48] world appears spontaneously

[38:51] which is also causeless.

[38:54] You come to know you are which you love

[38:57] so much. That is the primary illusion.

[39:02] Without body there is no word and hence

[39:05] no language. Then there is neither the

[39:08] sense of being norbeing.

[39:11] A sage has said that the seed always

[39:14] comes first and our beingness is that

[39:17] seed.

[39:18] What we call as our religion is not true

[39:22] and to be the self is the only true

[39:25] religion.

[39:27] You may do anything but do it without

[39:30] identifying with your body.

[39:32] Your consciousness itself is the sguru.

[39:37] It is said that Lord Brahma is the

[39:40] creator. Is he needed to create the

[39:42] worms which appear spontaneously in the

[39:45] cow dong? The creation by Brahma and

[39:50] your ideas about destiny are all mental

[39:54] impressions since your childhood.

[39:57] They are all concepts.

[40:00] The pure and free atma appears to be

[40:02] bound due to your mental impressions.

[40:07] Only the nor of consciousness

[40:09] and all the qualities can give you the

[40:12] correct knowledge.

[40:14] It is due to Maya

[40:16] that the consciousness is madly attached

[40:19] to itself.

[40:22] This illusion is termed as gona maya.

[40:26] Just as atman in the body is termed as

[40:29] maya, the same is also called ishwara.

[40:34] We come to know of our existence due to

[40:37] the primary illusion. But is it not a

[40:40] quality of sva?

[40:43] The waking and sleeping states always

[40:46] accompany our consciousness.

[40:47] [clears throat]

[40:48] It is the quality of the primary

[40:50] illusion to try to live as long as

[40:53] possible.

[40:54] It is incorrect to say that the primary

[40:57] illusion loves to exist because it is

[41:00] itself the love to be. As our true

[41:04] nature is paramatma.

[41:06] We are beyond all qualities. The

[41:10] beginning of beingness itself is called

[41:13] maya. Ishvara is the second name for the

[41:17] same

[41:18] that is parabatma

[41:20] which was aware of the non-existence of

[41:23] maya or consciousness.

[41:26] He is timeless and beyond consciousness

[41:29] being and non-being.

[41:32] At present he is the speaker and also

[41:35] the listener.

[41:37] When the sata quality becomes very pure,

[41:40] it reveals all its secret information

[41:44] like a pardoned criminal who turns into

[41:46] a prosecution witness.

[41:49] The nor of self is called a nata or

[41:52] mahatma.

[41:54] By continuous chanting of the guru

[41:57] mantra, the prana gets purified.

[42:00] Thereafter, the mind gets purified

[42:02] followed by the purification of sata.

[42:06] That finally leads to self-nowledge.

[42:10] Presently your cast is consciousness

[42:12] only and that is true guru deva.

[42:16] Never believe it to be the body. This

[42:20] will amount to insulting your guru.

[42:23] Of the five elements the subtlest is the

[42:26] space which ranks second to

[42:29] consciousness.

[42:30] Hence consciousness. No space but space

[42:33] cannot know consciousness.

[42:36] All the activities are prana and not

[42:39] yours. In the body, the prana appears

[42:42] along with consciousness.

[42:45] On leaving the body, prana occupies the

[42:47] vast space. All this knowledge should

[42:50] suffice to reject death as a false

[42:53] concept.

[42:54] The five elements and the lords and har

[42:58] are the creation of the primary

[43:00] illusion.

[43:01] All bodies made of the five elements are

[43:04] its creation.

[43:06] How can we be the bodies made of the

[43:09] five elements?

[43:11] You come to know your existence because

[43:14] of consciousness which you should watch

[43:17] without any word or thought.

[43:20] You have been given the mantra to chant

[43:22] in order to make the mind quiet.

[43:27] Birth and death are false.

[43:31] For one's own sake, everyone desires to

[43:34] live more and more. Why? It is not in

[43:38] our hands to continue our existence the

[43:40] way we want. What is the main thing

[43:44] which is false?

[43:46] That false thing is our consciousness

[43:49] because of which we come to know our

[43:51] existence.

[43:53] It is the product of the five elements.

[43:56] After knowing everything is false,

[43:59] whatever you do will also be false.

[44:02] When you have no control over your

[44:04] existence, what control can you have

[44:08] over your actions and other things?

[44:11] Everything is shunya or zero. And even

[44:15] that is false. Whatever you may do, none

[44:18] of it shall be of any use. Whatever you

[44:21] do will be for yourself. But you have no

[44:25] control over yourself.

[44:28] In other places where you will be kept

[44:31] busy in activities you cannot expect to

[44:33] hear such words.

[44:35] The great celebrities of the world who

[44:38] were once at the helm of things. Where

[44:41] are they [clears throat] now? Can you

[44:43] search them out? Those who came had to

[44:46] go. What was absent earlier and is

[44:50] present now has to vanish again.

[44:54] All that is created is false.

[44:58] This knowledge is useless for those who

[45:01] desire to live and accumulate.

[45:04] This is meant only for the seekers of

[45:06] truth.

[45:08] If you drop all your desires, cravings

[45:11] and fear, you will see yourself as you

[45:14] are in reality which is worth

[45:16] prostrating to.

[45:18] Your love for yourself is not your

[45:22] action but it is a happening.

[45:25] You like to exist but find it difficult

[45:27] to tolerate and you must do something or

[45:30] other to forget it. Without knowing your

[45:33] existence,

[45:35] there is nonduality in which there is no

[45:38] trouble.

[45:39] The quarrel starts in duality as soon as

[45:42] you know your existence.

[45:45] What have you done in order to appear in

[45:48] this world? The consciousness has

[45:52] appeared. It is Brahman. It disappears

[45:55] and it is everything.

[45:58] You have a feeling of being the doer

[46:00] which is wrong. In order to know your

[46:03] consciousness fully, you have to purify

[46:06] prana by chanting mantra and performing

[46:09] worship.

[46:11] Thereafter we know the self and our need

[46:13] to exist ends.

[46:15] Then all our activities happen

[46:18] spontaneously.

[46:20] The most important thing amongst the

[46:22] visible and the invisible is our

[46:24] consciousness.

[46:26] With our knowledge of its origin, we

[46:29] realize the self which may give rise to

[46:32] pride.

[46:33] This needs to be negated.

[46:36] Then what remains is pure visionana

[46:40] which is beyond knowledge and ignorance.

[46:44] Is there any enjoyer of this whole

[46:47] world? What is the use of the world?

[46:51] When I am not, where is my world? I must

[46:55] be present so that my world exists.

[46:59] Here I do not mean an individual but

[47:02] pure consciousness.

[47:04] When you exist, what is your first

[47:07] priority other than to protect your

[47:10] existence?

[47:11] A consciousness is not limited to a body

[47:14] but it pervades the whole universe.

[47:18] Take the example of your dream world.

[47:21] I use words and explain so that you are

[47:24] satisfied.

[47:26] In the juices of food made of the five

[47:28] elements there is the seed of

[47:30] knowingness.

[47:32] The appearance of knowingness is birth

[47:35] and its disappearance is death.

[47:38] You want to survive at any cost and you

[47:41] are prepared to put in all your efforts

[47:44] for the same.

[47:45] Still you pray and desire God's help.

[47:51] People use consciousness to find

[47:53] everything other than the origin of

[47:56] consciousness itself.

[47:59] The search begins with the question, who

[48:02] am I? When the questioner is absent, who

[48:06] will inquire? Hence for paramatma,

[48:10] questions like who am I and who are you

[48:12] are all meaningless.

[48:15] You must remember that your

[48:16] consciousness itself is the proof that

[48:19] parabrahman exists.

[48:22] That memory will be very useful. Your

[48:25] consciousness is real love and devotion.

[48:28] Be one with it so that all your pain and

[48:31] pleasure due to knowingness will vanish.

[48:36] Maya means self-love.

[48:39] It indicates that all appearances are

[48:41] deceptive.

[48:43] The compassion and tenderness are only

[48:46] passing phases applicable to that

[48:48] moment.

[48:50] In this world, the infatuation for

[48:52] self-love is the highest.

[48:55] This is the primary illusion, the

[48:58] original enchantment.

[49:00] Your self-love is seen by you as the

[49:04] world. The world is born with your

[49:07] memory I am and it vanishes with its

[49:09] exit.

[49:11] There is none present who can die. As

[49:15] long as you do not become one with

[49:17] yourself, your needs will remain and

[49:19] will go on increasing.

[49:23] All the body forms of the spontaneous

[49:26] appearances due to the five elements.

[49:30] The elements do not create these forms.

[49:34] It is said that those who have earned

[49:35] religious merit go to heaven. If so,

[49:39] where do animals like rats and donkeys

[49:42] go? There is difference in the bodies of

[49:45] different animals. But after they fall,

[49:48] the condition is the same for all.

[49:51] Isvara's lack of hair and feet are with

[49:55] you in the form of your consciousness.

[49:58] Except for the attention you devote to

[50:01] consciousness,

[50:02] all other attention directed elsewhere

[50:06] will merely invite trouble for you.

[50:09] Although your consciousness is formless,

[50:12] you always remember yourself to be with

[50:15] the form.

[50:16] Now worship your self-love without any

[50:19] doubt.

In these selections, the witness is the awareness in which every experience appears, including thoughts, sensations and even the experience of emptiness. The teacher asks, 'The seer has to be there even to see nothing,' pointing out that the knower cannot be one more object of knowledge.
He teaches that fear arises when you believe you are the body, and that 'in reality, there is no death but only forgetting the body identity.' Knowing yourself as bodyless consciousness, he says, lets you see yourself as your own protector rather than depending on something outside you.
The selections treat formal practice, such as repeating a mantra, as preparation that should eventually happen 'without any effort.' The teacher says the goal is to meditate 'until you forget that you are meditating,' and that continuous awareness of being awake is itself meditation.
It is a metaphor for the first sense of 'I am,' which the teacher calls the great blunder in the eternal. From that blemish, he says, the light of the apparent world emerges, and the pain of separateness is the sense of being an individual. It should be read as a spiritual image rather than a scientific claim.
He argues that the number of followers is a poor measure, because a teacher's worth should be judged by whether their teaching gives lasting happiness rather than temporary success. He observes that millions pass his road while only a few come to listen, and that 'the customers for the truth are not many.'
He says that what you cannot tolerate and cannot avoid makes you unhappy, while what you enjoy makes you happy. He adds that pain and pleasure change with physical health and the state of mind, so they are not a stable foundation for peace.
The video's title frames enlightenment as love, and the selections describe love as a quality of constant attention to one's own awareness, which the teacher says pleases the atma. It is not presented as sentimental affection, but as the steady self-attention that the teaching points toward.
