[0:04] >> Yes. In fathers, the brain is actually

[0:06] losing gray matter volume. The parts of

[0:09] the brain that are shrinking the most

[0:10] are in what we call the mentalizing

[0:12] network. And that's a part of the brain

[0:14] that helps us understand other people's

[0:17] feelings and intentions. And then you

[0:19] also see volume reduction in the visual

[0:22] areas, which is the back of the brain,

[0:23] which is really important for

[0:24] understanding when you look at an

[0:26] infant's face what kinds of emotions

[0:28] it's trying to tell you. Dads are mostly

[0:30] changing in this top layer, the cortex,

[0:33] which kind of controls our higher-order

[0:35] thinking, reasoning, and executive

[0:37] functioning.

[0:38] >> The way that you described the part of

[0:40] the brain that the man loses when they

[0:43] become a father made it seem like

[0:44] they're losing empathy.

[0:46] >> No, they're actually improving in their

[0:49] empathy because they're becoming more

[0:51] efficient processors of social

[0:53] information. So, the fact that where we

[0:55] see the biggest changes are in these

[0:57] what we call mentalizing social

[0:59] cognition networks tells us that those

[1:01] networks are really important for dads

[1:03] to use when they become parents.

[1:05] >> I thought you said that section of the

[1:06] brain shrunk.

[1:07] >> Yes, because the brain is becoming more

[1:09] efficient.

[1:10] >> Oh.

[1:10] >> It's losing all the extra pathways and

[1:14] you're sort of building a superhighway

[1:15] for that specific social information.

[1:18] >> Sounds a bit counterintuitive cuz I

[1:19] imagine that my brain would grow when I

[1:22] get better at something.

[1:23] >> In this case, the brain is actually

[1:25] shrinking. And I know it it sort of

[1:27] feels like a puzzle to wrap your head

[1:29] around, but it actually does reflect

[1:31] that the brain is working better. And

[1:33] it's working faster because you're sort

[1:35] of clearing the debris and you're just

[1:37] streamlined in how you're processing

[1:39] information.

[1:40] >> Is there a relationship between how

[1:42] hands-on the father is and the amount of

[1:46] shrinkage that happens in their brain?

[1:47] >> Yeah, and my lab found that

[1:49] relationship. So, when dads told us

[1:51] before birth that they felt more bonded

[1:53] to their unborn baby, when they wanted

[1:54] to take more time off, and when they

[1:56] told us 3 months after birth that they

[1:58] enjoyed their babies more, they felt

[2:00] more connected and bonded to them, and

[2:02] they were spending more time taking care

[2:03] of their babies, they had more profound

[2:06] brain shrinkage. All of this seems to

[2:08] support the contention that the

[2:09] shrinkage is really adaptive, and it's

[2:12] enabling men's adjustment to parenthood.
