Bringing the Jaguar Down From the Tree: Nervous System Reset

Alberto Villoldo
Alberto Villoldo

12 min di lettura

Da Alberto Villoldo - The Four Winds Society

Guarda · 8

A five-year-old boy walks into his nanny's room in Cuba and finds her stripped to the waist, bathed in sweat, smoking a cigar, a bowl of burning incense in front of her. When she turns around, the voice coming out of her is not hers. It is the voice of an old man, telling the child to sit down and be quiet. That memory, as Alberto Villoldo recounts it in a March 2025 video from The Four Winds Society, is where his talk on the Jaguar begins. From there he takes on a phrase he says he heard from Amazon shamans for many years, "bringing the Jaguar down from the tree," and reads it as a plain description of the human fight-or-flight system stuck on high alert. His proposed remedy is partly ancient, partly invocation, and partly a set of modern biochemical claims, including two supplements he recommends. The video is short, roughly eighteen minutes, and it is worth taking apart piece by piece, because the metaphor holds up better than some of the physiology around it.

What did a five-year-old in Cuba see that shaped this teaching?

Villoldo says he was raised by a nanny who was "part Indian and part African in Cuba" and who was "like a second mother" to him. The scene he describes is not framed as a dream or a parable. It is framed as the first time he understood that the people around him could be carrying something he did not have words for. The voice speaks to him directly. It tells him not to be afraid, that it will be looking after him his entire life, and that his nanny is fine: "she is here, she is one of us."

He then moves into an invocation, a spoken call to the animal powers of the Americas and beyond. The passage asks for a specific set of gifts: "bring me your gift of fearlessness that my heart might become still my mind quiet my breath soft and even." That line, which appears a little over two minutes into the video, is the emotional key to the whole talk. Fearlessness is not presented as bravado. It is presented as a condition of the body, a heart that can go still and a breath that can soften. The rest of the talk is an attempt to explain how a body gets there.

It is worth noting how much of the video rests on Villoldo's personal authority. He is describing his own childhood experience and his own years working in the Amazon. Viewers who want to test the claims should treat the nanny story as his testimony, not as independently documented history.

What does "bringing the Jaguar down from the tree" actually mean?

The central image is as vivid as any in shamanic teaching. A jaguar that is frightened climbs a tree. Coax it down and it will lash out at you, and at anyone else it feels threatened by. Villoldo's point is that this is not only a story about a wild cat. It is a description of a nervous system that has gone into defense and cannot find its way back down. In his words, "in order to calm the mind to find inner peace we need to do what the Amazon shamans call bringing the Jaguar down from the tree." He says he came to understand, over many years, that the phrase was about "resetting our fight or flight system" and about getting it "to rest in one of the lower branches so that it can be in deep relaxation like only cats can do."

This reading matters because it changes the goal. The aim is not to kill the jaguar or chase it away, and it is not to sit still and wait for it to leave. The aim is to lower it, gently, to a branch where it can rest. Villoldo is explicit that the animal is not the enemy. Its defensiveness is a response to a threat it perceives, and the work is to convince the system that the threat has passed.

He returns to this with a striking claim about the animal itself. "The Jaguar has no Predators," he says in the video. "It has nothing to be afraid of nothing." The argument is that once a person understands, in their actual life, that they are safe, the nervous system can be instructed to relax. Whether or not one accepts the shamanic framing, the logic is consistent: a body that believes it is under attack will not rest, and a body that has been shown safety repeatedly has a chance of coming down.

"The Jaguar has no Predators it has nothing to be afraid of nothing and once we understand that in our lives that we are safe then we can instruct our nervous system to relax."

— Alberto Villoldo, The Four Winds Society video, "Finding Peace Through the Jaguar's Spirit" (March 2025), around 11:00

Why does the modern nervous system stay up in the tree?

Villoldo's diagnosis of the present moment is blunt. "Today we live in a really staccato world," he says, "of Fast Cuts of constant stimulation of being having to multitask." He makes the point through film. He compares a scene from Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca with the editing of contemporary movies, noting that the scenes of an older film could run for two or three minutes, with the camera following the actor as he learned his lines. Modern cuts, he suggests, arrive in a rapid "Bam Bam Bam Bam" rhythm designed to keep an overstimulated brain engaged. The video places the point at about 5:36, and it is one of the most accessible arguments in the talk, because most viewers can test it on their own screens.

The second part of the diagnosis is the news. Villoldo argues that the fight-or-flight response lives in the limbic brain, and that this ancient part of the brain "cannot tell time or distance." It registers violence happening anywhere in the world as if it were at the edge of the village. "This part of the brain believes that the barbarians are right outside the village Gates and they're about to storm your house and steal your children," he says. In his account, the amygdala responds with anger and violence, which is why it is so quick to flare toward loved ones, toward oneself, and toward strangers. He asks the viewer to notice how fast that flare arrives, and that observation is useful even for people who would never describe themselves as shamanic.

Why do so many people live in freeze mode?

The most useful distinction in the video is the one Villoldo draws between fight, flight, and freeze. When a threat cannot be fought and cannot be escaped, the system moves into a third state. "We go into freeze mode and all of the systems in our body freeze," he says, naming the immune system, the emotions, and the body's repair systems. He adds that "so many of us today are living in freeze mode, paralyzed." This is the state he associates with a flattened, numb life, and it is a more interesting idea than the simple binary of being anxious or calm. A person in freeze is not frantic. They may look fine and feel nothing much at all.

He argues the way out is not primarily through therapy, though he says therapy "can help a lot." The priority, in his framing, is resetting the fight-or-flight system and repairing the hippocampus, the structure he links to new learning and to the capacity "for learning how to be at peace with yourself and at peace with the world." Without that repair, he says, a person stops learning: "school is out," and the world becomes "been there and done that."

Villoldo also offers an explanation for why so many people carry a jaguar high in the canopy from the start. He says that "many of us were born with our Jaguar way up in the highest tree in the forest because our mothers did not feel safe with their spouses," and because they were pregnant and wondering what would happen to them. The argument is that the fetus takes in the mother's threat state. This is a claim about inheritance that the video does not support with citations, and readers should hold it as Villoldo's interpretation rather than a settled finding. What the claim does offer is a reason to treat the nervous system as something that is shaped by relationships, long before a person can name what they feel.

Can supplements help reset the brain?

This is the section of the video that most needs careful reading. Villoldo describes serotonin as "the happy molecule," and says that without enough of it, "you're not going to be able to meditate" and "you're not going to be able to take a deep breath and watch the sunset without thinking of checking your email." He makes several specific claims. He says about 85 percent of serotonin is produced in the gut, that the gut flora of "90% of people in the United States in Europe" has been damaged by antibiotics and chlorinated drinking water, and that "6 weeks of exposure to serotonin will repair the hippocampus." The video gives no sources for these numbers or for the six-week figure.

From that starting point he recommends two serotonin precursors, which he names as L-tryptophan and 5-HTP. He suggests taking the L-tryptophan in the morning, as a small scoop or a pill, and 5-HTP at night. He tells viewers to read about both and to look them up, and he frames the project as turning the kitchen into a place where the brain can be supported. The Amazon shamans, he says, "knew the plants that increase serotonin production."

Readers should take this part of the talk with real caution. Serotonin-related supplements can interact with medications, particularly antidepressants and other drugs that affect serotonin, and the appropriate dose and safety depend on the individual. A person who is already taking medication, is pregnant, or is dealing with a mood or sleep condition should speak with a doctor or pharmacist before trying any precursor. The breath and invocation practices Villoldo describes carry far less risk, and they are a reasonable place to start on their own.

How do you invite the Jaguar back down?

Villoldo's most practical instruction is a breathing practice built on a count of four. Around the thirteen-minute mark he walks the listener through it: inhale to four, hold to four, exhale to four, and then rest in an empty pause to four before beginning again. The rhythm is simple and deliberately slow, and it works the way a metronome does for a musician. Each phase gives the attention a fixed shape to follow, and the repetition gives the body a predictable pattern. The point is not to hold the breath heroically. It is to make the breath steady enough that the body can read it as safe.

He pairs the breath with an imagined landscape, a scene of open country where the sun is setting through clouds. The invocation that closes the talk, at about the fifteen-minute mark, addresses the Jaguar directly: "Jaguar I call on you I summon you," and asks for the animal's company and protection. The language is devotional, but the mechanism Villoldo describes is practical. The animal is a symbol of a particular quality, the fearlessness that comes from knowing one is safe, and the practice is a way of rehearsing that quality until the body accepts it.

The deeper frame is his view of the animal relationship. He says that in the West "we don't have power animals we have pets," and he points to the root of the word animal: "remember the word animal comes from anima which means the spirit." The shaman, in his telling, has a working relationship with the spirit of the jaguar, the serpent, the hummingbird, the eagle, or the elk, and calls on whichever quality the moment requires. The jaguar is chosen here because it is the one that knows how to rest in the high branches after the threat has gone.

Where to go from here

The best way to engage with this talk is to watch it once for the teaching, then take the parts that are testable and leave the rest for your own judgment. The metaphor of the jaguar in the tree is a durable image, and it gives a precise language for something many people already feel: a body that is braced when nothing is actually chasing it. The breath count is simple enough to try today without any supplement, and it is the part of the video that asks nothing of anyone beyond attention.

  • Watch the full video, "Finding Peace Through the Jaguar's Spirit," by Alberto Villoldo on The Four Winds Society channel, and listen for the breathing instructions around the thirteen-minute mark.
  • Try the four-count breath for a few minutes at a time, noticing whether the rhythm changes how alert or braced you feel.
  • Pay attention to the moments you move from calm to reactive, as Villoldo describes, and see whether the speed of that shift surprises you.
  • If you are considering L-tryptophan, 5-HTP, or any serotonin-related supplement, check with a qualified clinician first, especially if you take other medications.
  • Read the video's claims about gut flora, serotonin production, and the hippocampus against independent sources before accepting them, since the talk itself offers no citations.

The Jaguar, in the end, is a question about where a person is willing to rest. Villoldo's answer is that the animal can come down from the tree once it understands that the village gates are closed, the barbarians are not coming, and the breath is slow enough to prove it.

[1:21] turns around and speaks to me and it's

[1:24] not her voice it's the voice of an old

[1:26] man who says come here little boy sit

[1:29] down be

[1:31] quiet and I was terrified I wanted to

[1:34] know what had happened to my nanny

[1:36] because I knew it was not her and this

[1:39] voice says that it's an old black

[1:42] slave that um is going to be looking

[1:46] after me my entire life he said do not

[1:48] be afraid I will be looking after you

[1:51] and I will be protecting you and your

[1:53] Nanny's fine she is here she is one of

[2:28] even let me know your power and your

[2:32] medicine you who know the ways beyond

[2:35] death into

[2:37] Infinity accompany into my

[2:41] sleep accompany me into my sleep every

[2:44] night and show me the ways of beyond the

[2:48] beyond that you

[2:50] know and that you are the guardian

[2:54] of I call on the spirit of the Puma and

[2:57] the mountain lion and the snow leopard

[3:00] of the

[3:02] Himalayas and the ancient

[3:09] cats that you bless me with your

[3:14] medicine that you become my Ally be by

[3:18] my

[3:21] side walk around me protect

[3:25] me let me know that I am safe at all

[3:29] times

[3:30] in the west we don't have power animals

[3:33] we have pets we have domesticated

[3:36] animals that lounge around the house and

[3:39] that we use for comfort and for

[3:42] connection and for love and for

[3:45] intimacy but the

[3:47] shaman has a unique relationship with

[3:50] the animal world remember the word

[3:53] animal comes from anima which means the

[3:57] spirit with the spirit world that is

[3:59] animated

[4:01] and is able to connect with the spirit

[4:03] of the jaguar or of the serpent or the

[4:06] hummingbird or the eagle or the elk

[4:09] depending on the qualities and energies

[4:11] that she needs to summon to herself

[4:15] today specifically I'd like to work with

[4:18] the

[4:19] Jaguar because in order to calm the mind

[4:22] to find inner peace we need to do what

[4:26] the Amison shamans call bringing the

[4:29] Jaguar down from the

[4:31] tree after hearing this phrase for many

[4:34] many years in my work in the Amazon I

[4:38] understood that they were talking about

[4:41] resetting our fighter flight system the

[4:44] Jaguar the Jaguar spooked it's scared

[4:48] It's Made its way up a tree and if you

[4:51] try to coax it down it'll

[4:53] go and lash out at you and lash out at

[4:57] anyone else that it feels threatened by

[5:00] so how do we bring that Jaguar down how

[5:02] do we reset our fight ORF flight system

[5:06] and how do we get it to rest in one of

[5:09] the lower branches so that it can be in

[5:11] deep

[5:12] relaxation like only cats can do so I

[5:16] want to do two things with us today one

[5:19] is to go a little bit over the brain

[5:21] chemistry and how you can improve that

[5:24] because in order to quiet the mind you

[5:26] have to quiet the brain today we live in

[5:28] a really staccato world of Fast Cuts of

[5:33] constant stimulation of being having to

[5:36] multitask and if you look at a movie

[5:39] from 50 years ago or 75 years ago

[5:43] Humphrey Bogart in

[5:47] Casablanca amazing that the scenes the

[5:49] Camera scenes go on for two to three

[5:53] minutes you learn your lines the camera

[5:56] followed you no Quick Cuts Like We have

[5:59] in today's movies which are Bam Bam Bam

[6:02] Bam Bam to keep the overstimulated brain

[6:07] engaged how do we how do we get out of

[6:10] this high gear that we're all in that

[6:13] we're being primed for by the media by

[6:16] the news we need to begin by resetting

[6:19] the brain I want to share with you two

[6:21] supplements that are incredibly powerful

[6:23] for doing that that are both serotonin

[6:27] precursors remember serotonin is some NE

[6:30] transmitter is the happy molecule

[6:33] without serotonin you're going to be

[6:35] miserable you're not going to be able to

[6:37] meditate you're not going to be able to

[6:38] make love you're not going to be able to

[6:41] take a deep breath and watch the sunset

[6:44] without thinking of checking your

[6:46] email you need to have adequate

[6:49] serotonin serotonin 85% of it is

[6:53] produced by the gut by your gut Flora

[6:57] that for 90% of people in the United

[7:00] States in Europe is damaged has been

[7:02] damaged by

[7:03] antibiotics and has been damaged by the

[7:07] chlorinated water in our water drinking

[7:11] systems our drinking water is full of

[7:13] poisons that is killing our Flora

[7:16] inhibiting the production of

[7:18] Serotonin but we can take supplements

[7:22] that are precursors to serotonin 6 weeks

[7:26] of exposure to serotonin Will Repair to

[7:31] hippocampus the structure in the brain

[7:33] responsible for new

[7:35] learning for learning how to be at peace

[7:37] with yourself and at peace with the

[7:39] world and if your hippocampus is damaged

[7:43] it begins to shrink and you stop

[7:45] learning school is out you're done you

[7:48] live in a world of been there and done

[7:52] that now how do we go about repairing it

[7:55] the precursors the Amazon shamans knew

[7:59] the plants that increase serotonin

[8:01] production and there are two that I want

[8:03] to recommend one is l triptan l trip

[8:08] toan you can order it from amazon.com

[8:11] you don't need to go to the

[8:13] Amazon and this you need to take in the

[8:16] morning take that in the morning take a

[8:18] half a scoop or a small scoop that comes

[8:21] in the package or if you take a tablet

[8:23] or a pill and then at night you take

[8:26] another precursor for serotonin which is

[8:29] called 5

[8:32] HTP read about it Google both of these

[8:34] things so you learn about the Shaman's

[8:37] kitchen how to turn your kitchen into a

[8:39] laboratory that you can begin to support

[8:42] the brain to create inner peace this is

[8:45] where the Jaguar comes in the Jaguar

[8:49] system for the shamans is the figh ORF

[8:52] flight system fight or run or flee when

[8:57] but when you can't fight and you can't

[9:00] run then we go into not fight or flight

[9:04] but freeze we go into freeze mode and

[9:08] all of the systems in our body freeze

[9:10] our immune system freezes our emotions

[9:14] freeze our repair systems in the body

[9:18] trees and so many of us today are living

[9:21] in freeze mode

[9:24] paralyzed the way to get out of freeze

[9:26] mode is not by going into therapy even

[9:29] though that can help a lot but by

[9:32] resetting fight ORF flight repairing the

[9:35] hippocampus getting the Jaguar to come

[9:37] down from the tree is

[9:39] spooked it's scared all of us are

[9:42] spooked today are you kidding just

[9:45] reading the news is terrifying it's

[9:49] extraordinary the amount of scary

[9:51] information that we're exposed to and

[9:54] remember the fighter fly system is in a

[9:56] part of the brain that cannot tell time

[10:00] or

[10:01] distance it reads about the violence

[10:04] happening somewhere in the world and

[10:06] this part of the brain believes that the

[10:08] barbarians are right outside the village

[10:10] Gates and they're about to storm your

[10:13] house and steal your

[10:15] children this is that ancient part of

[10:17] the brain the limbic brain where the

[10:20] figh ORF flight system is the amydala

[10:23] that responds with anger that responds

[10:26] with violence wow how quickly do we

[10:30] become angry with our loved ones with

[10:33] ourselves with the stranger bring the

[10:37] Jaguar down from the tree absolutely

[10:40] essential because it's a very fine

[10:43] Instinct that the Jaguar has remember

[10:46] the Jaguar has no

[10:49] Predators it has nothing to be afraid of

[10:53] nothing and once we understand that in

[10:56] our lives that we are safe

[10:59] then we can instruct our nervous system

[11:02] to relax it's okay we're safe many of us

[11:07] were born with our Jaguar way up in the

[11:11] highest tree in the forest because our

[11:14] mothers did not feel safe with their

[11:18] spouses they did not feel safe with

[11:21] their baby they were pregnant with this

[11:23] baby what's going to happen to me and

[11:27] already we were getting exposed to the

[11:30] stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol

[11:32] that go right through the placental

[11:34] barrier and programming us wiring us for

[11:38] fear and the Jaguar is the master the

[11:42] absolute master of this the Jaguar dares

[11:45] to go to the dark and hidden places in

[11:48] the rainforest that nobody dares to go

[11:51] into and is totally at peace and

[11:55] safe so today I'd like to not only share

[11:59] with you the brain chemistry which is

[12:01] really important that we understand but

[12:04] I want to share with you a meditation a

[12:06] journey a shamanic journey to

[12:09] summon the spirit of Jaguar to summon

[12:12] that great

[12:14] archetype today we're all familiar with

[12:17] the shadow side of the Jaguar the fierce

[12:20] the angry Jaguar the scratching and the

[12:24] your partner says something that you

[12:27] misunderstand and you react

[12:30] aggressively instead of peacefully

[12:32] instead of say hi honey what what did

[12:35] you

[12:36] mean so how do we summon the light side

[12:41] of the Jaguar medicine this is Jaguar

[12:44] medicine and it's an ancient archetype

[12:48] that's available to all of us so I like

[12:51] to invite you to join me in a journey to

[12:55] summon jaguar and to work with Jaguar

[12:58] medicine and to do that we need to begin

[13:01] with our breath and with a breathing

[13:04] practice with a breathing practice to

[13:07] help to reset our nervous

[13:12] system so we're going to be inhaling to

[13:15] a count to

[13:17] four holding to

[13:19] four exhaling to

[13:22] four and empty the

[13:26] FL deep breath

[13:30] and

[13:33] exhale and now inhale to four 1 2 3 four

[13:38] hold to four 2 3 four exhale to four 2 3

[13:45] four empty to four 2 3 four inhale to

[13:52] four four hold the four two three four

[13:58] exhale to four

[14:00] 2 3 4 and empty to four 2 3 four inhale

[14:06] to four 1 2 3 4 and hold to

[14:12] Four 3 4 exhale to

[14:16] four three four and empty to

[14:21] four and on your

[14:25] own hold the four one 2 3 four exhale to

[14:30] four 2 three four empty to

[14:36] four inhale to four 1 2 3 4 hold to four

[14:43] 1 2 3 four exhale to four 1 2 3 four

[14:51] empty to four 2 3 four inhale the

[14:58] four and

[15:04] exhale and in your mind's ey I'd like

[15:06] you turn to turn to the west to the

[15:09] place of the Setting Sun beautiful

[15:12] sunset over the

[15:14] ocean maybe over the hills the mountains

[15:17] or across the plains the Sun is

[15:21] setting the sky is

[15:23] turning red and

[15:27] orange all of the colors of the sunset

[15:30] in their

[15:31] Glory the sun setting through the clouds

[15:34] lighting up the

[15:37] sky and you call on the spirit of the

[15:39] Jaguar golden Jaguar that eats the dying

[15:44] son mother sister

[15:46] Jaguar I call on you I summon you from

[15:49] the place of the Setting

Alberto Villoldo says the phrase describes resetting the fight-or-flight system so it can rest in a lower branch and reach deep relaxation. A frightened jaguar climbs a tree and lashes out if coaxed down, which he uses as a metaphor for a nervous system stuck in defense. The goal is to convince the system that the threat has passed.
In Villoldo's framing, yes: he says the Amazon shamans' Jaguar is the fight-or-flight system, and he locates that response in the limbic brain and amygdala. He argues that this part of the brain cannot tell time or distance, so it reacts to distant news as though danger is at the village gates.
Freeze is the third state the nervous system enters when a threat can neither be fought nor escaped. Villoldo says that in freeze the immune system, emotions, and repair systems all shut down, and that many people live there without realizing it. He argues the way out involves resetting fight-or-flight and repairing the hippocampus, not therapy alone.
Villoldo recommends L-tryptophan in the morning and 5-HTP at night as serotonin precursors, but the video gives no clinical sourcing for its claims. Serotonin-related supplements can interact with medications, so anyone taking antidepressants or other drugs, or who is pregnant, should consult a doctor or pharmacist first.
He describes a four-count pattern: inhale to four, hold to four, exhale to four, then rest in an empty pause to four before repeating. He pairs it with an image of open country at sunset. The aim is a steady, predictable breath that the body can read as safe.
He points to fast editing and constant stimulation, comparing the longer scenes of older films such as Casablanca with rapid modern cuts. He also argues that news of violence anywhere in the world activates the ancient limbic brain. Both, in his account, keep the body braced for a threat that is not physically present.
Villoldo says the shaman has a working relationship with animal spirits and calls on the quality each one embodies, such as the jaguar's fearlessness. He notes that the word animal comes from anima, meaning spirit. He contrasts this with Western pets, which he describes as domesticated animals kept for comfort.
