'Be the Light' Meaning: Surrender, Fear, and Becoming Whole

The first line of "Be the Light" arrives without ceremony: "Another December now coming home." It is the sound of someone returning to a place they have been away from for a long time, and the song builds its entire architecture on that sense of return. Across roughly five minutes, the lyric moves from the restlessness of having "roamed" to a stillness that is described as something new, then to surrender, then to the courage to face fear, and finally to a collective wholeness. What holds these movements together is a refrain that does something unusual: it keeps the same melody and the same promise while quietly changing whom the promise belongs to.

What does the opening December homecoming mean in "Be the Light"?

The song opens on the calendar, not on a doctrine. Alicia Mathewson's first verse places the listener at the end of a year, where "another December" arrives and the singer comes home "but not like I've ever done before." That phrase carries the song's whole premise. Returning is familiar; returning differently is the point. The verse acknowledges the wandering ("all the places you had me roam") and frames it as preparation: "so I could be here now for what's in store."

This is a useful way into the piece for anyone who has not heard it. The song is not asking for a dramatic conversion. It asks the listener to notice that the same season can be entered with a different posture, and that the past journeys were not wasted but were the road to the present moment. The lyric is gentle about this. It does not scold the roaming. It simply says that now the singer is here.

Why does the second verse ask us to be still?

The second verse answers the first with a single turn: "Another December and I'm being still." The phrase "not like I've ever done before" returns, now attached to stillness rather than travel. Stillness, in this song, is an active act, and its completion is named in the line that gives the verse its spiritual center: "It's time to surrender to Divine Will / And laugh as she opens every door."

Surrender to Divine Will is one of the oldest themes in devotional music, and it is easy to hear as passive resignation. The song resists that reading. The lines pair surrender with laughter and with doors opening, which suggests trust rather than defeat. The image of Divine Will as feminine ("as she opens every door") is worth noticing too, because it is a deliberate choice in a genre that often defaults to masculine or genderless pronouns for the sacred. Whatever the listener's own theology, the verse makes a clear claim: letting go of control is the condition under which new doors appear.

How does the refrain "Be the light" change across the song?

The refrain is the spine of "Be the Light," and its structure is the most interesting thing about it as a piece of songwriting. In the first chorus the line is an intention spoken in the first person: "I'm gonna / Be the light / I always dreamed I be / Be the light for all to see." The singer is making a private vow.

In the third chorus that vow is addressed outward. "You've gotta / Be the light / You always dreamed You be." The grammar has shifted from declaration to instruction, and the capitalized "You" in the lyric sheet signals a turn toward the listener. In the final chorus the same melodic phrase becomes communal: "We've gotta / Be the light / We always dreamed we'd be / Be the light for all to see."

Read in sequence, the refrain moves from "I" to "you" to "we." The melody does not change, and the promise to shine does not change, but the person making the promise widens each time. The song begins with a single voice resolving to be luminous and ends with a plural subject who has taken on the same task together. That progression is simple to state and difficult to achieve in a three-minute structure, and it is why the refrain works as a chant rather than a slogan.

"It's up to each and everyone one of us to become what we know / Dig down deep inside ourselves and let it all go."

From the lyrics of "Be the Light," released by Alicia Mathewson in December 2016

What is the song saying about fear and becoming whole?

The third verse is where the song turns from personal surrender to the harder work of inner honesty. The lines about digging "down deep inside ourselves" and letting things go are the most direct instruction in the song. They describe a process rather than a feeling: you cannot simply declare that you are the light. You have to excavate what is in the way.

The final verse makes the fear explicit: "It's time to remember how to make friends with your fear / and let yourself become whole." The phrasing matters. Fear is not defeated or banished. It is befriended, which implies that it has been treated as an enemy and is being invited into relationship instead. Wholeness is not presented as an achievement but as something that happens when the self stops fighting its own parts. This is a recognizable idea in contemplative traditions that work with difficult emotion rather than around it, and the song states it in plain, singable language.

The sequence matters here as well. The song does not ask for fearlessness at the start. It arrives at fear only after the listener has been invited to come home and to be still. Friendship with fear, in this structure, is possible because the ground has already been prepared.

What does the bridge-like "we" and the closing repetition add?

The final verse begins "Another December and I'm still here / Singing with all my soul." Where earlier verses describe arrival and surrender, this one describes staying. "Still here" is the most grounded phrase in the song. The singer is not claiming to have arrived at enlightenment. She is simply present, singing, and willing to continue.

The song closes by fading into the repeated words "the light, the light, the light." Repetition is one of the oldest tools in chant, and in this case it removes the last traces of argument. The message is no longer a proposition to consider. It becomes a sound to keep making. Anyone who has sung a short refrain over and over in a room full of people knows how a line can shift from something you think to something you are doing together.

Where does the song's gratitude come from?

The video's own description offers a small window into the context of its 2019 release. Alicia Mathewson wrote there that she was "beyond grateful for the ocean, the people in my life and the music I get to make," and closed with the line "May All Beings in All the Worlds Be Happy and Free." The description also marks the original December 2016 release and the video's re-release on December 15, 2019, with the note "What a decade! Bring on 2020!"

Those details frame the song as a December ritual that has been returned to over time, rather than a one-time statement. That fits the lyric itself, which is about coming home again and again, "not like I've ever done before," each year.

Where to go from here

If you are listening to "Be the Light" for the first time, play it twice. On the first listen, follow the story: a December homecoming, a season of stillness, a turn toward fear, and a closing chorus that gathers everyone into the vow. On the second, listen only to the refrain and notice the pronouns. Hearing the shift from "I" to "you" to "we" changes how the chorus lands, and it makes clear why a short song can carry so much.

Then try the song's own practice. The lyric asks for three things that are easy to say and hard to do: come home without apology, be still enough to let go, and make friends with the fear that stands between you and wholeness. The song does not promise these will be quick. It simply says that it is time, and that you are still here.

The song is a December homecoming meditation that moves from restlessness to stillness, surrender, and collective wholeness. Its refrain, "Be the light for all to see," begins as a personal vow and widens into a shared one by the final chorus.
In the second verse, surrender is paired with laughter and with doors opening, which frames it as trust rather than defeat. The lyric suggests that letting go of control is what allows new possibilities to appear.
The melody and promise stay the same, but the subject widens with each chorus: "I'm gonna be the light," then "You've gotta be the light," then "We've gotta be the light." The change turns a private intention into a shared task.
The song was originally released in December 2016, according to the video's description. The official video was released on December 15, 2019, and the description notes it as a new video release of the song.
The final verse asks listeners to "make friends with your fear" rather than defeat it. Fear is treated as something to be invited into relationship, and wholeness is presented as the result of no longer fighting one's own parts.
Alicia Mathewson included this line in the video's description, closing a note of gratitude for the ocean, the people in her life, and the music she makes. It is a traditional-style wish for universal well-being, offered alongside the song rather than inside its lyrics.
