You Meditated for 20 Minutes. And Lost Your Patience Five Minutes Later.

You finished your meditation. For twenty minutes, you followed your breath, observed your thoughts, and tried to keep your attention on the present moment.

You felt good. You put away your mat, picked up your phone, and found an unpleasant message.

Five minutes later, you were irritated, responding impulsively, and repeating exactly the behavior you had been trying to change.

And then the question arises: What was the point of meditating?

There is a curious expectation surrounding meditation. We expect it to make us permanently calm, patient, understanding, and emotionally balanced. As if a few minutes of practice could erase years of habits, reactions, and conditioning.

This expectation also appears when we observe others. Someone practices yoga, meditates daily, knows mantras, and studies Eastern philosophy. Yet the moment they show irritation, sadness, or impatience, judgment follows: Aren't they supposed to meditate?

Since when did meditation become synonymous with the absence of inner conflict?

Meditation allows us to observe something that often goes unnoticed: how quickly we react to our experiences.

An unpleasant remark, unexpected criticism, someone interrupting our concentration, or a situation that doesn't go as planned. Within seconds, the body responds, thoughts multiply, and a reaction begins to take shape.

How often do we notice this process while it is happening?

During meditation, we can practice this observation. Attention is directed toward the breath, a mantra, a bodily sensation, or another object of concentration. Thoughts arise, attention wanders, and we gently return to the practice.

This seemingly simple movement allows us to recognize some of our mind's habitual patterns.

We begin to notice how we anticipate situations, replay conversations, create expectations, and resist what makes us uncomfortable.

But there is one detail I find particularly interesting: how we react when we realize we have lost concentration.

Do we become frustrated with ourselves? Do we start criticizing our performance? Do we assume we are incapable of meditating?

Even during a practice centered on awareness, we may reproduce the same self-criticism we bring into other areas of our lives.

And that deserves our attention.

Meditation encompasses different traditions, techniques, and purposes. Some practices encourage relaxation. Others focus on concentration, contemplation, mantra recitation, or observing present-moment experiences.

Each has its own characteristics, and its effects vary depending on the individual and the context.

What particularly interests me is the opportunity to observe how our minds function and how we relate to what we feel.

Irritation may still arise. Sadness, too. Some conversations will remain difficult, and certain situations will continue to cause discomfort.

A difference may begin in that brief moment when we recognize what is happening before responding automatically.

Sometimes, we manage to choose a different response. Other times, we only recognize our behavior afterward.

That awareness is also part of learning.

So, the next time you finish meditating, pay attention to what happens when you encounter the day's first frustration.

How does your body react? What thoughts arise? Do you recognize a familiar pattern?

Perhaps these observations will reveal aspects of yourself that would hardly emerge during twenty peaceful minutes.

After all, our relationship with meditation also reveals itself when we open our eyes and return to everyday life.
