Waterfall Yoga Therapy is the private yoga therapy and retreat practice of Sarah Cummins, a certified yoga therapist in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Her work is somatic and non-pharmacological, drawing on somatics, yoga, Ayurveda, neuroscience and psychology to support people living with chronic pain and illness. The practice has been in business since 2014.
Sarah came to this work through her own experience. Her chronic pain began in her late 20s, during a high-stress life as an active-duty military spouse, with sleep issues, inflammation, rumination, anxiety and depression. Yoga became the path toward better health, and she now helps others with similar struggles take part in their own long-term recovery.
She fell in love with yoga in 2001 and practiced regularly from 2008. She graduated from teacher training in 2015 and was mentored by a retired military nurse, later assisting with her Ayurvedic training. While stationed in Germany, she taught yoga to soldiers alongside a physical therapy clinic. After two years of training with Inner Peace Yoga Therapy, she became a certified yoga therapist. She describes herself as a Somatic Yoga Therapist, Personal Trainer, Pain Care Yoga Instructor, Brain Health Trainer and Senior Fitness Specialist.
Sarah works one-on-one and with couples, in person at two Huntsville-area locations and by telehealth, building individualized plans for concerns such as anxiety, back pain, grief, hypermobility, menopause, pelvic disorders, post-traumatic stress and sleep. The practice also offers on-demand classes, guided meditations, workshops and retreats, and Sarah mentors other yoga teachers.
The retreats take place on a 20-acre property in New Market, Alabama, where a waterfall gives the practice its name. Half-day, day and weekend retreats combine movement, meditation, breathwork, and time in nature, and private retreats are available for small groups of up to six.
