Queen of Mantra (Instrumentals) by Wah!: A Listening Guide

Where This Album Sits in Wah!'s Arc

Wah! has spent decades moving between registers. Her bio describes her as the first female to bring kirtan, the call-and-response chanting of India, to the West in the 1990s, a claim that comes from her own website. She has played bass guitar with her joyful rock band since 1997, built the multimedia Healing Concert in 2012, and sold more than 100,000 copies of her Savasana CDs. Her catalog stretches from dance mixes to dub-tinged yoga compilations to long devotional albums.

Queen of Mantra (Instrumentals) arrived on August 30, 2019, the same day as its vocal companion, Queen of Mantra. It is an eight-track record, and it shows a different side of her work: the chants without the chanting. Where much of her catalog invites you to sing back, this one invites you to listen inward. It is the album to reach for when you want the structure of the mantras without the words asking anything of you.

Sonic Character

The foundation, per the artist's own description of her sound, is harmonium-led arrangement. With the vocals removed, the harmonium's reedy, breathing tone moves to the front, and the melodic lines that her voice would normally carry become the point of focus. Because the album is the instrumental counterpart of a Sanskrit mantra record, the shapes of the chants remain audible in the phrasing: the rise and return, the repetition, the sense of a call waiting for an answer that never arrives in words.

That absence is the album's defining feature. The mood is warm rather than austere, and the pacing is measured rather than driving. Listeners who know Wah! mostly from her rock-band energy may be surprised by how much room the music leaves. I can't point to specific production credits or additional players, because none are documented here; what the facts support is a harmonium-centered sound that favors repetition and space over variety.

Tracks Worth Naming

I can't name individual tracks with confidence. The available information confirms the album has eight tracks but does not supply their titles, and inventing them would do you a disservice. Rather than guess, here is what to listen for across the running order, wherever you find it:

  • The opening minutes. Notice how quickly the harmonium establishes a drone-like home base. This is where the album tells you how patient it intends to be.
  • Any track where the melody repeats longest. Repetition is the engine of kirtan. Without a voice to cue the shift, you begin to hear subtle changes in emphasis and phrasing that a sung version might mask.
  • The closing track. Instrumental albums often end by thinning out. Pay attention to how the final piece releases you, and whether the silence afterward feels earned.

Check the track list on Spotify to match these moments to titles.

Its Place in the Tradition

Wah!'s work belongs to bhakti, the devotional path in which sung names of the divine carry the practice, and her form is kirtan. This album sits at an interesting edge of that tradition. Kirtan is participatory by nature, so an instrumental version is a departure: the congregation's voice is replaced by yours, silently or not.

It also overlaps with ambient and meditative music, where repetition and tonal stability create a space for attention to settle. Purists of unaccompanied Indian kirtan may find her approach more produced and modern, and the data does not name a specific teacher or line of succession, so her place in the lineage is best understood as her own account. Still, as a bridge between devotional form and background-friendly listening, the instrumental record does a clear job.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album is strongest for three kinds of listeners. First, newcomers to Wah! who want to hear the architecture of the chants before engaging with Sanskrit lyrics; the companion vocal album is a natural next step. Second, practitioners of seated meditation or quiet yoga who find lyrics distracting. Third, anyone in a life moment that calls for steadiness: a stretch of stress, burnout, or a long working day that needs a soft landing. The fan-made bumper sticker "Less Stress More Wah!" captures the spirit.

It will land less well with listeners who want variety, high tempo, or ironic distance. The catalog rewards comfort with repetition and devotional sincerity, and this album concentrates both.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Play it through once, start to finish, in the evening, with headphones and no other task. Dim the lights if you can. For the first pass, let the harmonium be the only thing you follow. On a second listen, try silently supplying the call-and-response yourself: hum or mentally sing the lines that the voice would carry. If you practice yoga, the album also suits a quiet closing sequence or a seated sit afterward.

If the instrumental version moves you, move to Queen of Mantra and hear the same material with Wah!'s voice restored. Listening to the two in sequence shows how much the singing adds, and how much the music holds on its own.
