Where It Sits in Tina Malia's Arc

Malia is a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and sound engineer whose music moves between sacred chant, world, dream pop and folk. Her path began with a classical education guided by her mother, a concert pianist and opera singer from South Korea. Her father gave her a guitar at fifteen, and she taught herself from the example of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco and Alison Krauss. After her first album, Shores of Avalon, she met Jai Uttal, who invited her into his Pagan Love Orchestra and opened the door to Sanskrit mantra. Who It Lands Hardest For

This will mean most to listeners who already find their way into feeling through voice and repetition: kirtan regulars, yoga and meditation practitioners, and people who love sacred music without needing it tied to one religion. It may also suit anyone in a tender or transitional moment, such as grief, heartbreak, a creative reopening, or a return to the body, since Oshun is traditionally associated with love, healing and the flow of water. Listeners seeking a dense, eventful album will find a single track a modest offering. That is the point of it.

How to Listen

Choose an evening, after the day's noise has gone. Use headphones if you can, since Malia's engineering background suggests the space around the voice matters. Dim the lights, and if it suits you, set a glass of water nearby as a quiet nod to the river the piece is named for. Play it once without doing anything else. Then play it again, perhaps with a few minutes of silence afterward. A single track invites that kind of repetition, and with devotional music the second listen is often the one that opens.
