Rishi Prabhakar

Indian yogi (1948-2014) who founded Siddha Samadhi Yoga and Rishi Samskruti Vidya Kendra, synthesizing ancient Vedic meditation practices with engineering rigor.

What is Rishi Prabhakar?

Guruji Shri Rishi Prabhakar (1948–2014) was an Indian yogi who instructed many spiritual teachers across the country. He was the founder of Rishi Samskruti Vidya Kendra, a Public Charitable Trust, and developed many programs such as Siddha Samadhi Yoga (SSY), Kaya Kalpa Kriya (KKK), Advanced Meditation Course (AMC), Bhava Samadhi Training (BST), Hundred Percent Memory (HMP, also known as RCRT), Infant Siddha Program (ISP) and Inspirational Leadership in Rural Development (ILRD) for the well-being of humanity. Founded by Guruji Rishi Prabhakar in 1974, SSY is the rediscovery of the ancient Vedic science of effortless and joyful living. His approach distinguished itself by merging scientific methodology—informed by his background in aeronautical engineering and computer science—with classical Indian meditation and Vedic teachings. He was recognized by the parishad of Pandits and scholors in Guntur in the year 1998 as the “Yoga Brahma” for his creation of yoga practices related to Samadhi in his unique methods. Jaggi Vasudev, now known as Sadhguru, learned yoga from Rishi Prabhakar, then taught it at the same organization before starting Isha Yoga.

Origins & lineage

Rishi was born in 1948 in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka, India and lived with his family in the city of Bangalore. He pursued his studies in aeronautical engineering at Bangalore University and further pursued his masters in management at Western Ontario University, Ottawa, Canada, on a full scholarship, where he acquired Canadian citizenship. He was also a computer scientist. In July 1974, Rishi’s teacher, Elizabeth Morrison, introduced him to Transcendental Meditation founded by the spiritual leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In the same year, he started working as an International Director at the Switzerland headquarters of Maharishi, where he worked for two years. Following his TM initiation, Prabhakar served as International Director at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s headquarters in Switzerland from 1974 to 1976. Fountainhead of the SSY knowledge is the exemplary life of my master Bhagwan Shri.Visweshvaraiya. His simplicity, nobleness, divinity and yet profoundly human life has been a theatre of enlightenment in action. He has personally, morally and spiritually guided this work. This body has only be an instrument in his Divine Sankalpa to provide true light to mankind. Having met my master I had found my brother, my father. Bhagwan Shri Vishveshwaraiya belong to the Parampara of Nada Yogis He had achieved self realization through Nada (music).

Around 1980, Rishi attended a training called EST by Werner Erhard in California. According to his official website, the training was a turning point in his life, and he learnt a lot from the teachings of Werner in EST training and Robert Fritz’s DMA training. In 1982, Prabhakar founded the Rishi Samskruti Vidya Kendra (RSVK), a not-for-profit organization, with his mother and a few others. In 1974, Rishi founded his famous Siddha Samadhi Yoga (SSY) program. According to Guruji, the effortlessness that came with his consistent meditation provided him insights and answers that laid the foundation of his SSY course. By the 1980s, SSY had become a structured multi-week course featuring breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation on silence, and dietary practices including raw food protocols.

How it’s practiced

SSY stands for ‘Siddha Samadhi Yoga’ (often expanded as ‘Science of Silence Yoga’) where Siddha means ‘something (i.e., knowledge) that is proven or accomplished’, Samadhi means ‘a state in which the intellect is equanimous’ and Yoga means 'union with one’s… Our ancient rishis had formulated a unique mode of training called “Brahmopadesam”, which is an instruction on the science of non-doing and experiencing stillness within and abundance without . SSY is the present-day version of this ancient science of “Brahmopadesam”. In practice, SSY unfolds over an eight-week foundational program (often called the “Joyful Living” or “Sadhana” program) culminating in an initiation day (Brahmopadesham) where participants receive personalized meditation instructions. AMCs are five-day events, also called nitya samadhi, designed to take one into one’s own state of silence. BST is about attaining the ability to experience the bhavas (emotions). Suppression of emotions leads to stress and a general low level of joy in life. The Kaya Kalpa Kriya program, developed in Puducherry during the 2000s, integrates yoga asanas, breathing, diet modification, and prolonged meditation aimed at cellular rejuvenation and longevity.

Practitioners describe the experience as emphasizing effortlessness over exertion, silence over ritual, and inner stillness over mental control. Rishi Prabhakar says that many systems like yoga take you from the physical to the egotistical, but SSY reverses this process. Similarly, he points out that most self-improvement systems try to change what you are thinking; the practice of samadhi changes the way you think.

Rishi Prabhakar today

They were married for a span of 15 years until Prabhakar’s death in 2014. In 1999, Prabhakar married the entrepreneur Smita Ubale, later to be known as Arundhati Ma. As a result, he attained Mahasamadhi in Bengaluru on 16 February at 6.26 a.m. The Organisation is dedicated to the promotion of Prabhakar’s knowledge, and ever since his demise, it has been looked after by a group of CORE individuals, including his family and disciples from all over India. Maha Acharya Sri Chaitanya Kaikini ji was identified as the next spiritual head of the organisation by Guruji Sri Rishi Prabhakar in April, 2011. Guruji Sri Rishi Prabhakar identified and installed Maha Acharya Sri Chaitanya Kaikini ji in April 2011 as the next spiritual, executive and moral authority.

Today, seekers encounter Rishi Prabhakar’s teachings primarily through RSVK and affiliated SSY centers in India (Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, and other cities) and internationally (Toronto, Ottawa, Dubai, Sharjah, Tokyo, Los Angeles). Rishi Prabhakar oversaw an organisation with over 100 ashrams and 700 centres at its peak. The eight-week SSY Sadhana Program remains the foundational offering, with advanced retreats, teacher trainings, and specialty programs (Kaya Kalpa Kriya, RCRT memory techniques, leadership programs) available for graduates. A 32-acre campus called Rishi Tapokshetra near Bangalore serves as the main training hub. Organizations continue under the names SSY USA (LiYA), SSY Rajkot, and The House of Rishi Prabhakar, managed by his family and senior disciples.

Common misconceptions

Rishi Prabhakar is not a lineage holder in any formal paramparā recognized by traditional Vedantic institutions. While his teachings draw on Upanishadic concepts of Brahmopadesham and Advaita Vedanta’s emphasis on non-doing (akarma), SSY is a modern reformulation rather than an unbroken transmission. Prabhakar himself credited multiple sources—Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Werner Erhard’s EST, Robert Fritz’s DMA training—as equal influences alongside his primary guru Bhagwan Vishveshwaraiah.

SSY is not identical to Transcendental Meditation, though Prabhakar trained in TM and served Maharishi. The techniques differ: SSY incorporates pranayama, group processing, dietary restrictions, and a framework of emotional catharsis (BST) not present in TM. Joining Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, he rose up in the TM movement. While TM emphasizes effortlessness, Prabhakar felt it involved some doing and began to chart his own course. That meant uprooting himself to return to India.

The relationship between Rishi Prabhakar and Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) remains contested. At end of 1983, In Sadhguru exclusive app and in Sadhguru’s book that he was invited for a lunch in some yoga program (Rishi Prabhakar’s SSY) where he met his future wife vijayakumari or vijji, from there their love story began and they got married in 1984 on Mahashivratri (which can be in feb/march). Sadhguru was conducting yoga classes in those organisations as a yoga teacher. One fact I wish to share is we both got trained by Guruji Rishi Prabhakar in the years 1984–86. We both took SSY teachers training together in Gommatagiiri near Mysore. Neither teacher publicly acknowledged the other during their lifetimes; Prabhakar never made public statements about Vasudev, and Vasudev has not discussed Prabhakar’s role in detail.

How to begin

To encounter Rishi Prabhakar’s teachings directly, locate an SSY center through ssy.org, ssy.life, or ssyusa.org. The entry point is the eight-week Siddha Samadhi Yoga Sadhana Program, typically meeting one evening per week with a weekend retreat for Brahmopadesham initiation. Prerequisites include readiness for dietary modifications (temporary raw food protocols during intensive phases) and commitment to daily meditation practice post-initiation. Advanced practitioners can apply for five-day Advanced Meditation Courses (AMC) or Bhava Samadhi Training (BST) retreats, offered at ashrams in India and occasionally at international centers. Teacher training programs exist but require years of personal practice first.

No comprehensive published book by Rishi Prabhakar exists in wide circulation; teachings were transmitted orally and through course materials. Video recordings of satsangs and discourses are preserved by RSVK and The House of Rishi Prabhakar. Prospective students should verify center affiliation, as multiple organizations now carry forward different aspects of his legacy under separate institutional structures.
