SUKHA (pronounced SOO-KUH, meaning ease or bliss) is a mantra band and musical yoga and sound duo from Southern California. It is made up of Nicole, E-RYT500, and her husband Steven, a yogi and guitarist who is E-RYT200. Their stated purpose is to open the doors for others to fall in love with the elevating effects and healing powers of mantra, yoga, meditation and sound healing.
They write and produce their own folk- and rock-inspired mantra music, built around Steven's "expressive and masterful guitar" and Nicole's "powerful and buttery voice," as their site puts it. That music runs through their yoga classes, trainings and workshops, and through the sessions at their dedicated sound bath studio, The Sound Bath Oasis® in Palm Desert, California. They also lead kirtan regularly and support other yoga teachers with mantra music for different styles of yoga.
SUKHA has released three full-length albums: RISE (2016), CUSP (2018) and FIRE (2022). The site describes RISE and FIRE as award-winning and CUSP as critically acclaimed. Of FIRE, Jai Uttal, a Grammy®-nominated musician, wrote that it alternates "between deeply meditative, introspective songs and joyful, celebratory chants." LA Yoga Magazine wrote that together SUKHA "emanates powerful energy."
The duo has toured nationally and internationally, often with a mix of other musicians. They are regular presenters at festivals including Ahimsa Yoga Fest, Sedona Yoga Festival and European Yoga Festival. They created the Fire-Aid Mantra-Thon in 2018 and have taken part in Kirtan Aid. Their YouTube channel offers yoga, meditation methods and mantra music. Their words on the home page: "Music is love. Meditation is essential. Peace is possible."
Worth Knowing
SUKHA is a Southern California mantra band and yoga teaching duo: Nicole, an E-RYT500 registered yoga teacher, and her husband Steven, an E-RYT200 yogi and guitarist. The word SUKHA means ease or bliss in Sanskrit, and that concept anchors their philosophy—they create original folk- and rock-inspired mantra music, lead kirtan gatherings, and teach meditation and sound healing workshops. Their work resonates with practitioners and students who are serious about the contemplative dimensions of yoga and mantra, not casual seekers looking for wellness background music. Nicole's alto voice carries Sanskrit mantras over Steven's guitar arrangements with a distinctly Western folk-rock sensibility, making traditional mantra accessible to contemporary listeners who might otherwise find classical Indian kirtan presentation intimidating. They've performed at major yoga festivals including Ahimsa Yoga Fest, Sedona Yoga Festival, and the European Yoga Festival, establishing themselves as credible teachers and artists within the broader yoga and sound healing community. Their guiding philosophy—music is love, meditation is essential, peace is possible—informs everything from their albums to their teaching, and they've backed that up with community action, creating the Fire-Aid Mantra-Thon in 2018 and participating in Kirtan Aid.
