Jonathan Foust, MA, CSA, is a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and a founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. A senior teacher and former president of Kripalu Center, he leads retreats, trainings and classes in the Washington, DC area and around the country, and works individually with people interested in healing and spiritual awakening. His work centers on body-centered inquiry, meditation and spiritual transformation, combining mindfulness meditation, Focusing and intuitive inquiry.
He was born and raised on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm. His parents were active in the Quaker tradition, and the idea of "the still, small voice within" was part of his childhood. At a Quaker boarding school he learned transcendental meditation and first experienced yoga. After graduate school he taught high school for a year in New Mexico, then served in the Peace Corps, teaching phonetics at the University of Niamey in Niger. Back in the United States, he stopped at the Kripalu Yoga ashram in Pennsylvania for lunch and stayed for 24 years.
At Kripalu he studied with many teachers, practiced and taught yoga and meditation, facilitated groups in transformational work, and honed his skills as a body-centered teacher and counselor. He later helped create a new ecumenical, nonsectarian program center honoring all traditions and served for a number of years as its president. He then moved to Washington, DC, where he lives with his wife, Tara Brach, and their dogs.
His training includes Kripalu Yoga (500-hour professional level), Focusing (certified trainer), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Community Dharma Leadership at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and a Master of Arts in Education. He has also trained in bodywork and healing modalities including Trager Work, Zero Balancing, Cranio-Sacral work, Polarity Therapy, Reiki, clinical hypnotherapy and Vivation breathwork.
Today he leads daylong and residential retreats, co-leads Vipassana retreats, teaches teachers of meditation, and works one-to-one with students. He offers a weekly guided meditation and dharma talk, with a large library of talks and meditations freely available. His six-CD set, Body-Centered Inquiry, gathers many of the practices he teaches.
Worth Knowing
Jonathan Foust is a meditation teacher with four and a half decades of intensive practice and teaching experience, currently serving as a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. He is a former president and senior teacher of Kripalu Center, where he spent 24 years deepening his understanding of yoga, body-centered inquiry, and spiritual transformation. Rather than limiting himself to a single modality, Foust has woven together mindfulness meditation, focusing practice, intuitive inquiry, and various healing modalities into a distinctive teaching approach. He created the Year of Living Mindfully, a framework that brings contemplative practice into daily life beyond the meditation cushion. People are drawn to Foust's work because he combines substantial institutional experience—including shaping policy at Kripalu—with a deeply personal, body-centered approach to awakening, and because he offers sustained community and accessible entry points through weekly free guided meditations and dharma talks supported by donations. His work appeals to serious practitioners, teacher trainees, and those seeking to integrate meditation and healing into everyday life rather than compartmentalize it as separate from the body and its wisdom.
