Jagjit Singh was born Jagmohan on 8 February 1941 in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, into a religious middle-class Sikh family. He studied classical music under Pt. Chaganlal Sharma and later under Ustad Jamal Khan of the Senia Gharana, while drawing inspiration from Ustad Aamir Khan Saheb's style. He attended Khalsa School and DAV College Jallander, where he performed at All India Radio, before eventually settling in Bombay in 1965 to pursue music professionally.
In 1970, Singh married Chitra Singh, a vocalist trained by ear in a musical family. Together they shifted focus from film music to ghazals, releasing their landmark album "Unforgettable" in 1976, which transformed the landscape of non-film Indian music and brought them national recognition. Songs like "Baat Niklegi," "Aahista Aahista," and "Dard Badhkar" established their reputation. They followed with albums including "Milestone," "Ecstasies," "Sound Affair," and "Passions," and composed music for television serials such as "Mirza Ghalib" and "Kahkashan."
Singh has performed across over 40 countries and collaborated with numerous artists including Lata Mangeshkar, Gulzar, and Sukhwinder Singh. He has released bhajan albums, devotional works, and collaborated with Prime Minister Vajpayee on "Nai Dishayen." In 1990, their only son Vivek died in a road accident; Singh subsequently deepened his engagement with religious and devotional music. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2003 and has been involved with multiple charities including CRY, Prayas, and Save the Children. Singh is also known for his passion for horse racing and owns thoroughbred racehorses.
Worth Knowing
Jagjit Singh (born February 8, 1941, in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan) is the architect of modern ghazal singing—the artist who lifted this Urdu poetic form out of film music and into concert halls as a standalone classical art form. In 1976, he and his wife Chitra Singh released "Unforgettable," a watershed album that fundamentally reoriented Indian listeners toward serious ghazal repertoire; tracks like "Baat Niklegi," "Aahista Aahista," and "Dard Badhkar" became touchstones of non-film Indian music and remain the entry point for most Western and diaspora listeners discovering ghazal. His training under Ustad Jamal Khan of the Senia Gharana, combined with his study of Ustad Aamir Khan Saheb's interpretive style, gave him both technical depth and aesthetic distinctiveness. Beyond ghazals, Singh has composed for acclaimed television serials like "Mirza Ghalib" and "Kahkashan," collaborated with luminaries including Lata Mangeshkar and Gulzar, and performed across over 40 countries. His recognition includes the Padma Bhushan (2003), and his work spans devotional music, bhajans, and sufi-inflected compositions—making him a rare figure who commands credibility in both classical and spiritual musical contexts. With 4.6 million Spotify followers, his influence on how global audiences understand Indian classical music remains without parallel.
