Allyson Grey is a painter and social sculptor best known for co-founding the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM), a visionary art sanctuary and interfaith church in Wappingers Falls, New York. Her work bridges abstract painting, sacred geometry, and social practice, using art as a tool for community building and consciousness expansion. Alongside artist Alex Grey, she has spent decades creating physical and conceptual spaces where art functions as a devotional and participatory experience.
Grey's paintings are characterized by geometric grids, linear fields, and what she calls "Order" and "Chaos" systems. Her abstract canvases rely on repetition, color gradation, and structure to evoke states of meditation and contemplation. Unlike the anatomical mysticism of Alex Grey's work, Allyson's visual language is rooted in pattern and seriality, reflecting her interest in the underlying order of the universe. Her painting practice draws on traditions of minimalism and process art, yet her intention is explicitly spiritual, positioning her work within the broader movement of contemporary sacred art.
In 2004, Allyson and Alex Grey founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, originally conceived as a touring exhibition and later established as a permanent physical site. CoSM opened its doors in Wappingers Falls in 2009, serving as a gallery, performance venue, and ceremonial space. The facility houses the Sacred Mirrors series, a collection of life-sized paintings depicting the human body in material, energetic, and spiritual dimensions, as well as rotating exhibitions of visionary art. Allyson serves as president of CoSM's board of directors and oversees much of the organization's programming and development.
Grey trained at Tufts University, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She later studied with Zen master Dainin Katagiri at the Minnesota Zen Center and has cited her Zen practice as foundational to both her artistic discipline and her approach to community work. She met Alex Grey in Boston in the 1970s, and the two have worked as creative and spiritual partners ever since. Together they have taught workshops on art, consciousness, and the creative process at institutions including Omega Institute, Naropa University, and the California Institute of Integral Studies.
CoSM has grown into one of the most recognized centers for visionary art in North America, attracting thousands of visitors annually and hosting full moon gatherings, talks, music events, and retreats. The organization has expanded through crowdfunding campaigns and volunteer labor, reflecting Allyson's commitment to participatory models of art-making and institution-building. Her concept of social sculpture—derived in part from the ideas of Joseph Beuys—emphasizes art as collective action, with CoSM itself functioning as a living artwork co-created by its community.
Allyson Grey continues to paint, teach, and develop CoSM's programs. Recent projects include the construction of the Entheon, a new 12,000-square-foot exhibition hall completed in 2019 to permanently house the Sacred Mirrors and other large-scale works. She remains active in the visionary art movement, lecturing on the intersection of art, spirituality, and social change.
For anyone encountering Allyson Grey's work today, it offers a model of art as infrastructure—not just image-making, but the creation of spaces, rituals, and communities in which art and spiritual practice become indistinguishable.
Worth Knowing
Allyson Grey is a visual artist and co-founder of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM), an interfaith sacred art sanctuary that has become a pilgrimage site for artists, seekers, and spiritual practitioners since its founding. Her practice spans painting and what she calls social sculpture—the deliberate creation of spaces, communities, and experiences designed to awaken consciousness and foster connection. What distinguishes her from many working in sacred art is her dual commitment: she creates visionary paintings that function as devotional objects, while simultaneously architecting the physical and social environments where those works live and are encountered. Her collaboration with artist Alex Grey has produced some of the most recognizable visionary art of the past three decades, but Allyson's own voice as a painter and community builder has been essential to that work's impact. People care about her practice because it refuses the false separation between aesthetic experience and spiritual transformation—the paintings aren't illustrations of ideas but invitations into them, embedded in spaces intentionally designed to support that encounter.
