Nature retreat and eco farm stay in Namibia's south, near Kalkrand
Boscia African Farm is a nature retreat and eco farm stay near Kalkrand in southern Namibia, about two and a half hours south of Windhoek, between the Kalahari and the Namib Desert. It covers 11,100 hectares of preserved wilderness. It is known for healing retreats, including Systemic Constellation work and Soul Quest, for safaris among endemic game, and for the Heart Projects that tie every visit to the community next door. The land was once Farm Gras, named for its sweet Gras Schmidtia grasses, such as Silky Bushman and Kalahari Feathergrass. The Woerman family founded it as a sheep farm more than a century ago. When sheep stopped paying, the farm was sold and changed hands several times, and by the late 1990s the ground was bare and exhausted. It returned to family hands in 1998. Waterholes were drilled, rusted fences cleared and endemic game restored, at first for an ethical hunting farm. Then came the drought of 2013 to 2021, in which the farm saw 95 percent of its game lost. The family closed the hunting chapter and committed to restoration. The name comes from the boscia, the Shepherd Tree, a Namibian tree whose leaves hold all year and feed giraffe and kudu when times are scarce. The first constellation work gathering was held at Boscia in 2018, led by Anne Kurth, and the farm has run as a place for healing since. The retreat programme runs on four tracks: Constellation Work Retreats, Soul and Vision Quests, Creative Workshops and Nature-Led Retreats. Soul Quest lasts four days and sends guests into the desert for time alone in wilderness, guided practices rooted in ancient traditions, and rituals and reflection. It is guided by Lolla and Zuzanka, co-founders of Nature Within SA. Motherland, founded by Anne Kurth, began as an idea for a seminar on the farm in 2017 and turns ten in 2027. It holds two eight-day Experiences at Boscia, the Entrepreneur Experience and the People Experience. The People Experience adds yoga and mindfulness to the constellation work. The 2026 and 2027 dates are 6 to 13 November 2026 and 22 to 29 January 2027. Beyond the retreats, guests can take morning or evening game drives in open Land Rovers, guided hikes with giraffe tracking, mountain bike routes, sundowners, dinner in the field, African cooking classes and desert donkey cart rides. They can also sleep under the stars at a bush camp. Accommodation is eleven double rooms, one family house and a remote campsite. Six Standard Double Rooms open onto the farmhouse garden and courtyard. Five Luxury Double Rooms sit in the Main Farmhouse with verandas facing the savanna. The Family House has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The Nature Camp stands at a waterhole called Brown House, 5 km from the farmhouse, with a bush shower heated by a traditional donkey boiler, and is available by request. The farm has a pool, a temple and a firepit. Power for air conditioning is solar, water comes from a borehole, and meals draw on the farm's own Gardens of Hope and game from the land. Five marked trails run from 5 km walks to 45 km treks, and the farm keeps a private airstrip for light aircraft. The land is recovering, and the farm tracks the animals that have come back: secretary birds, bat-eared foxes, Angolan giraffe calves and leopard tortoises. Boscia is for travellers who want a quiet start to a Namibian journey, for families, and for groups and facilitators who want to host their own retreats. Coaching, energy and constellation work, creative workshops and spiritual workshops all fit. No previous wilderness or spiritual experience is needed for the resident retreats. Every visit supports the Omomas Care Centre, 8 km away and home to 160 children, run with Pro Namibian Children. Guests can also visit the centre or volunteer in the Gardens of Hope.
