Vortex Healing

Vortex Healing (VortexHealing®) is a modern energy-healing system taught by Ric Weinman since the mid-1990s. Practitioners channel what they call divine energy through the hands and attention.

What is Vortex Healing?

Vortex Healing, usually written VortexHealing® or Vortex Divine Energy Healing, is a contemporary energy-healing method and training system founded by the American healer Ric Weinman. Practitioners say they act as a channel for a spiritual energy they call divine energy. They direct it with intention, hand placement, and focused attention toward a client’s physical body, emotions, energy field, and subtle energy centers. The same energy is also applied to the practitioner’s own spiritual development.

If you are asking what Vortex Healing means, note that the word vortex here does not refer to the Sedona-style geographic energy vortexes. It refers to the swirling, concentrated flow of energy that practitioners describe feeling and directing during a session. The name is a registered service mark, so it identifies one specific organization and curriculum. It is not a generic term for any vortex-based practice.

It is classed as a spiritual or energy-healing tradition, not a medical therapy. No peer-reviewed clinical evidence demonstrates that it treats any disease.

Origins & lineage

Ric Weinman has taught the method since about 1995 and is the central figure in its history. According to his own biographical materials, he worked as a full-time energy healer for roughly fifteen years before the system took its present form. He describes a sudden vision in which he reconnected with healing knowledge from a past life. Weinman and his students attribute the energy to a divine source and describe the teaching as a lineage received through spiritual guidance. The tradition’s materials also name a figure called Merlin in this context.

The account of origins comes almost entirely from the organization’s own materials and from critics. No independent historical or scholarly documentation of an ancient lineage has been published, so the claims of antiquity should be treated as the community’s own account of its origins. The system has no connection to a documented Hindu, Buddhist, or Taoist transmission line.

In the early 2000s the curriculum added what its teachers call awakening classes. Weinman has said he was himself awakened in 2002, and these classes extended the work beyond healing into spiritual realization. Weinman teaches regularly at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. He has also published a book, VortexHealing: Divine Energy Healing (2015). A small group of senior practitioners, who are authorized trainers, now teach the curriculum in several countries.

How it’s practiced

A session typically takes place with the client lying or seated, clothed, with little or no physical contact. The practitioner sets an intention, invokes the divine energy, and moves attention through the client’s body and energy field. Practitioners report sensations such as warmth, tingling, pressure, or movement. Clients often report deep relaxation, emotional release, or nothing noticeable at all. Sessions can be done at a distance, because practitioners hold that the energy does not depend on proximity.

Practitioner training is staged. Early classes teach students to feel, direct, and clear energy in themselves and in others. Later levels cover work on specific energy centers and the subtle bodies. Students typically practice on each other and in community clinics before working with the public.

Vortex Healing today

Seekers now meet Vortex Healing mainly through multi-day workshops, regional practitioner groups, community clinics, recorded sessions, and online classes. Local groups meet through platforms such as Meetup. Individual sessions are offered by certified practitioners, some of whom are licensed massage therapists or counselors who add the method to existing practices.

Student responsibility agreements for the courses state that teachers are not responsible for symptoms that arise during classes or practice. This reflects the organization’s own acknowledgment that the work can stir up strong experiences.

Common misconceptions

  • It is not an ancient, independently documented tradition. The lineage claims rest on the founder’s account.
  • It is not medicine. Practitioners are not entitled to diagnose or treat disease, and it should not replace medical or psychiatric care. Any benefit beyond relaxation and the placebo response is unproven.
  • It is not the same as Reiki, Qigong, or Kundalini yoga, though it resembles them in being an energy-based practice. Its terminology, curriculum, and teachers are distinct.
  • It is not uncontroversial. Some Christian and other critics describe it as occult because of its channeling language and the Merlin reference. Practitioners reject that label and describe the work as spiritual but non-denominational.
  • It does not refer to geographic vortex sites such as those of Sedona, Arizona.

How to begin

For vortex healing for beginners, the usual entry points are Ric Weinman’s book VortexHealing: Divine Energy Healing, a single session with a certified practitioner, or an introductory class or community clinic run by a local group. Beginners should check a teacher’s credentials directly with the organization. They should also read the student agreement before enrolling, and keep any medical care they already have.
