Inner Engineering

A yogic self-transformation program created by Sadhguru in 2011, centering on the 21-minute Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya and designed to align body, mind, and energy.

What is Inner Engineering?

Inner Engineering is a structured program of yogic practices and teachings developed by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev and offered through the Isha Foundation. At its core is the transmission of Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, a 21-minute daily practice combining preparatory postures (upa yoga), breath regulation, bandhas (energy locks), mudras (hand gestures), mantra chanting, and meditation. The program frames itself as a “technology for wellbeing” rather than a philosophy or belief system, offering tools to manage stress, refine attention, and cultivate what Isha materials describe as inner stability.

Unlike general mindfulness or fitness-oriented yoga classes, Inner Engineering follows a fixed curriculum—participants complete seven 90-minute online sessions (or a multi-day in-person retreat), then receive live instruction in the Shambhavi kriya, which is performed seated in siddhasana (accomplished pose) for a specified duration each day. The program’s language borrows engineering metaphors: participants are told they can “engineer” their inner experience the way one would optimize a machine.

Origins & lineage

Inner Engineering Online was created in 2011 by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, founder of the Isha Foundation, a volunteer-run nonprofit established in the early 1990s. Sadhguru—born Jagadish Vasudev in Mysore, India, in 1957—describes his teaching authority as arising from a spontaneous mystical experience in 1982 on Chamundi Hill in southern India, rather than from formal discipleship within a named lineage. He has stated in interviews and his 2016 book Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy (Spiegel & Grau) that he did not study yogic treatises comprehensively but approaches yoga “experientially.”

Shambhavi Mahamudra itself has roots in classical hatha yoga; the term “Shambhavi Mudra” appears in texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) and the Gheranda Samhita (17th century), where it denotes an eyebrow-center gazing technique. Sadhguru’s Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya is a modern synthesis—he characterizes it as an “ancient” practice he has “brought to the modern world,” though the specific sequence taught in Inner Engineering was designed by him and is proprietary to Isha Foundation. The program does not affiliate with any traditional guru-parampara (lineage succession) and operates independently of established yoga schools.

How it’s practiced

Inner Engineering is delivered in multiple formats. The most common path begins with Inner Engineering Online: seven self-paced sessions (approximately 90 minutes each) featuring video lectures by Sadhguru on topics such as responsibility, desire, and the mechanics of the mind, interspersed with guided meditations. Participants then register for Inner Engineering Completion—available online, in-person locally, or at Isha centers in Coimbatore, India, or McMinnville, Tennessee—where they receive live transmission of the Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya.

The kriya itself is a 21-minute seated practice performed twice daily (typically morning and evening). It opens with three preparatory postures (butterfly pose, “rock the baby,” and a cat-stretch variation), followed by six to seven minutes of pranayama (often nadi shodhana or a variant called Sukha Kriya), 21 repetitions of the mantra “AUM,” a round of bhastrika (bellows breath), application of bandhas, the Shambhavi eyebrow-gaze mudra, and a closing meditation. Participants are instructed not to share the precise sequence publicly; Isha emphasizes that the kriya must be “transmitted” in person or via authorized online session, not learned from a book or video.

No special physical flexibility is required, though participants must be able to sit cross-legged. The practice is described as safe for most adults; Isha recommends participants be at least 15 years old (parental consent required for minors) and suggests consulting a physician if pregnant or managing serious health conditions.

Inner Engineering today

As of 2024, Inner Engineering is available in ten languages (including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, and Arabic) and has been completed by millions of people globally. Isha Foundation reports that the program has been piloted in Fortune 500 companies and offered to military veterans, students, and police at subsidized rates. Four-day residential retreats are held at the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore and the Isha Institute of Inner-sciences in Tennessee; shorter in-person programs (often weekend-based) are periodically offered in major North American, European, and Indian cities.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies examined Inner Engineering Online’s effect on stress in IT professionals, finding statistically significant reductions in perceived stress among compliant participants, though effects on broader measures like burnout were mixed. Isha cites additional studies claiming improvements in emotional balance, focus, and sleep quality, though independent replication is limited.

Sadhguru’s 2016 book Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy, published by Spiegel & Grau (Penguin Random House), became a New York Times bestseller and serves as a companion text, though it does not include technical instruction in the kriya itself.

Common misconceptions

Inner Engineering is not a general yoga class. It does not emphasize physical fitness, flexibility, or posture refinement in the way that vinyasa or Iyengar yoga do. The preparatory postures are minimal; the core practice is meditative and energetic.

It is not affiliated with any religion. Isha materials repeatedly clarify that the program involves no worship, rituals, or deity invocation, though it uses Sanskrit terminology and references classical yogic cosmology (chakras, prana, the concept of “energy body”). Participants from various faith backgrounds attend, and the program does not ask anyone to renounce prior beliefs.

It is not a one-time event. Transmission of the kriya is delivered in a single session (or over a weekend), but the practice itself is intended as a lifelong daily discipline. Isha emphasizes that benefits accrue with consistent practice over months and years; immediate dramatic experiences are possible but not guaranteed.

Finally, it is not free of controversy. Isha Foundation has faced scrutiny in India over land use, allegations of coercive volunteer recruitment, and questions about financial transparency. Critics have raised concerns about the organization’s hierarchical structure and the intensity of commitment expected from long-term volunteers. These issues do not bear directly on the efficacy of the practices but are part of the broader context in which the program operates.

How to begin

To learn Inner Engineering, visit innerengineering.com or isha.sadhguru.org. Register for Inner Engineering Online (a one-time fee, typically $150–$300 USD depending on region, with scholarships and discounts available for students, veterans, and low-income participants). Complete all seven sessions at your own pace (no time limit, though Isha recommends finishing within 30 days).

Once finished, you may register for Inner Engineering Completion to receive the Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya. Completion is offered online (via scheduled live session), in-person in your city, or as part of a multi-day retreat. After transmission, participants gain lifetime access to practice support materials, a 40-day guided audio series, and optional follow-up programs.

For those preferring in-person immersion from the start, Inner Engineering Total—a four- or seven-day retreat combining the online content and kriya transmission—is offered periodically at Isha centers.

Sadhguru’s book Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy (available in major bookstores and libraries) provides philosophical and autobiographical context but does not substitute for the program itself.
