As the veil between worlds grows permeable each autumn, ancient cultures have long gathered to honor the threshold—to deepen their relationship with the land, speak with ancestors, and attune to the seen and unseen. This five-day spiritual retreat at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California invites you into that liminal space, held by land practitioners and ritualists Fletcher Tucker and Micha Merrick. During the season when Samhain and Hallowe'en mark the spiral turn of the year, you'll gather in the wild Northern California coast—traditional Esselen Tribal territory—to practice earth-based kinship, plant medicine wisdom, and ceremonial presence.
This is not a retreat of theory alone. You'll move your body across the rugged Big Sur terrain, sit with plants that have healed for millennia, journey inward through sound and meditation, and learn to listen as the land itself becomes teacher and ancestor. Whether you're drawn to European earth-based traditions, indigenous plant knowledge, or simply a deeper conversation with the living world, this gathering meets you where you are while expanding your capacity to belong to something larger than yourself.
What to Expect
Over five days, you'll move between structured indoor sessions and immersive outdoor practice on the Esalen property and beyond. Facilitators Fletcher Tucker and Micha Merrick draw from European earth-based kinship practices while honoring land relationship across cultures—weaving together:
- Daily ritual and embodied practice grounded in the medicinal, ecological, and ceremonial dimensions of Northern Hemisphere plants
- Sound journeywork and guided meditation designed to deepen attentiveness and ceremonial presence
- One full-day wilderness immersion featuring a three-mile hike across Big Sur's steep, rugged terrain
- Ancestral and spiritual communion held within the container of autumn's permeable threshold
You'll leave with practical knowledge of plant allies, a felt sense of kinship with the land beneath your feet, and tools for tending relationships with both seen and unseen worlds. Many participants discover a renewed capacity for ritual, a clearer sense of their own ancestral lineage, and a deeper belonging to the earth.
