What if the deepest divisions we face—between communities, cultures, even within ourselves—could become gateways to profound healing and connection? The Heart Remembers is a five-day immersive workshop at the legendary Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, designed to rewire how you meet conflict, difference, and the tender places inside yourself that contract when trust feels broken.
Facilitated by Nitsan Joy Gordon and Nadya Giol—peacebuilders with years of on-the-ground experience bringing Israelis and Palestinians into genuine dialogue through Together Beyond Words and the Army of Healers—this workshop offers more than theory. It's a lived practice in rebuilding trust and staying present when everything in you wants to turn away. While rooted in the specific context of Middle Eastern conflict, the methodology speaks directly to the polarization we're all navigating: across cultures, families, and movements. This workshop is for educators, facilitators, healers, and anyone committed to authentic connection in divided times.
You'll work with your own nervous system, your inner landscape, and your capacity for compassion—both for others and yourself. Through body-based practices, storytelling, deep listening, and principles of Internal Family Systems (IFS), you'll learn the U-turn: the inward gesture that transforms how you meet both your own reactivity and relational conflict. Small-group settings create safety for real inquiry. By the end, you'll leave with both personal clarity and practical tools you can bring back to your communities.
What to Expect
Over five days at Esalen's stunning clifftop sanctuary, expect a rhythm of grounding practices, movement, and contemplative work. Sessions combine somatic (body-based) approaches with storytelling circles, guided inquiry into your own inner reactions, and compassionate communication skills. You'll explore how to stay present and resourced even when difference feels threatening. Facilitators create conditions for vulnerability and authenticity while maintaining clear, nurturing boundaries. The small-group format allows for personalized attention and real transformation. You'll leave with a toolkit for navigating polarization with presence, wisdom, and an open heart.
