Qarabağımsan, known in English as Land of the Nightingales, is a piece Sami Yusuf wrote as his answer to war in Qarabağ (Karabakh). Its official audio was finally released after five years of waiting, and Yusuf describes it as a love letter and a love song to the land and its people, a place that has given Azerbaijani music many of its greatest voices. The clip is brief, but the story behind it is a lesson in how a composer can respond to a crisis with music and see that response through a long, difficult process.
Yusuf's own words in the video description set the purpose of the work: "The only way I know to meet life's joys and sorrows is through music. When war came to Qarabağ (Karabakh), this piece was how I responded." The song is not framed as commentary on events. It is framed as a personal act of mourning, love and gratitude, expressed in sound.
The making was as demanding as the subject. Yusuf writes that the piece was recorded entirely remotely during Covid, with musicians and choir members spread across many days and nights. Many were members of the State Philharmonic Orchestra, and others were masters of traditional Azerbaijani instruments. Bringing those separate recordings into what he calls "one coherent, living whole" was, in his words, a mammoth task. The words are by Aytan Ismikhanova, the soloists are Sahib Pashazade on tar and Shirzad Fataliyev on balaban, and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan commissioned the work. Yusuf credits Prof. Sevda Mammadaliyeva as "the beating heart of this project."
For context beyond the clip, the tar is a long-necked plucked lute and the balaban is a double-reed wind instrument, both central to Azerbaijani traditional music. Their presence alongside a full orchestra and choir is part of what makes the piece sound rooted in its place rather than generic.
The song holds grief, affection for a homeland and thanks to the people who endured. Yusuf closes his note by thanking "the resilient and great people of Qarabağ, and to all the people of Azerbaijan," and adds: "This song belongs to you."
