Eki Ananda Paramananda: Meaning of a Thakur Anukul Bani

Satsang
Satsang
Oct 9, 2026
読了 約3分

Fourteen seconds is barely enough time to draw a breath, but a short devotional clip can carry a whole spiritual posture in a few lines. This one, posted by the channel Satsang Music under the title of a bani (a teaching, or utterance) attributed to Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra, opens with a sung refrain in Bengali: a burst of joy, a supreme bliss, and the play of the Purushottam, described as ever new. There is no spoken discourse in the clip. What it offers is the devotional mood itself, and that mood is worth understanding on its own terms.

What do the words "Eki ananda paramananda" actually mean?

The refrain, sung twice with a musical interlude between the lines, runs as follows in Bengali:

একি আনন্দ পরমানন্দ, পুরুষোত্তম লীলা অভিনব

Rendered into English (the translation here is ours, not the channel's): "What joy, what supreme bliss, the play of the Purushottam, ever new." Each phrase does distinct work. Ananda is joy, and paramananda pushes it past ordinary pleasure into bliss beyond measure. Purushottam is a title for the highest Person in Hindu devotional vocabulary, a name that points toward the divine as the supreme presence rather than a figure among others. Lila, which the refrain pairs with the word for "play," is one of the oldest terms in Indian devotional thought. It describes the divine acting in the world not from lack or necessity but from delight, the way a child plays or a dancer moves for the sheer joy of moving.

The adjective abhinava, "new" or "novel," is the detail that gives the refrain its edge. It suggests that the divine play is never stale. Devotional songs of this kind return to the same words again and again, yet the lines are meant to be sung as though the wonder were arriving for the first time. That tension, between a fixed refrain and a freshly felt experience, is central to how kirtan and bhajan work in practice.

Where does this sit in the wider Satsang tradition?

Outside the clip, and not stated in it, Thakur Anukul Chandra (1888–1969) was a Bengali spiritual teacher whose followers gathered in the Satsang fellowship. Sung devotion has been part of that community's life alongside its teachings, which is why a bani might appear as a song. Whatever the clip itself says, the title signals that these lines are meant to be heard as the teacher's own words, carried into melody.

For a reader meeting this for the first time, the useful takeaway is simple: the refrain is an invitation to joy before it is an argument about doctrine. Listen for the word ananda and let the music do what the translation cannot.

Where to go from here

A fourteen-second clip is an entry point, not a complete teaching. To go deeper, seek out the channel's longer satsang recordings and kirtan performances, which place single refrains like this one within full sessions. For the teacher's own words, look for published translations of Thakur Anukul Chandra's bani, which will give you the context the clip leaves out. Hearing the refrain in several recordings will also show how much a devotional line changes with the singer's voice.

よくある質問

The Bengali refrain translates roughly as 'What joy, what supreme bliss, the play of the Purushottam, ever new.' The translation is the article's own rendering of the sung lines, not the channel's. Ananda means joy and paramananda means supreme bliss.
Thakur Anukul Chandra (1888–1969) was a Bengali spiritual teacher whose followers formed the Satsang fellowship. The video's title attributes this bani to him, though the clip itself contains only the sung refrain.
Lila means 'play' or 'sport' in Indian devotional thought and describes the divine acting in the world out of delight rather than need. The refrain's phrase 'the play of the Purushottam' draws on this idea.
