[0:03] okay
[0:05] good times
[0:06] today is maybe my favorite thing as a
[0:12] teacher to do my favorite thing as a
[0:16] meditator to do
[0:17] today is rest and flow
[0:20] i believe these are the two most
[0:22] practically applicable
[0:25] themes we could work with
[0:28] either and both together especially can
[0:30] eliminate most suffering
[0:33] and if someone comes to me and says what
[0:34] is an equanimity practice i go let's try
[0:37] some rest and flow
[0:39] so i'm just going to say a little bit
[0:41] about each of them and then i will guide
[0:44] a journey
[0:46] rest
[0:47] and you all know these i'm just going to
[0:49] talk about them maybe in a little
[0:51] different way than what you're used to
[0:53] maybe not
[0:55] rest
[0:56] is a
[0:58] chill we all need
[0:59] and some rests are absences some are a
[1:02] restful place to park
[1:04] the more we practice rest
[1:07] the more we practice
[1:10] release
[1:11] the more we practice
[1:12] non-resistance
[1:16] the more equanimity and uh uh
[1:19] the lubrication we have although that's
[1:21] flow
[1:23] resistance guarantees it's going to hurt
[1:27] if you resist something it guarantees
[1:29] it's going to hurt and if you're really
[1:31] hurting there's a really high
[1:33] probability you've got some resistance
[1:34] there so really learning to hone in on
[1:37] and release that with kindness is an
[1:40] incredibly powerful practice it helps us
[1:44] selectively attend to soothing the
[1:46] nervous system rest also
[1:50] often usually leads to flow so these two
[1:53] have an interactive component i'm going
[1:55] to talk about in a second
[1:57] there are two rest states i want to just
[2:00] mention ahead of time
[2:02] of all we have there's six categories
[2:04] cnc out here and you're out feeling fill
[2:07] out each of those are spaces domains
[2:10] categories
[2:11] and each one of those has a rest state
[2:13] there are of those there's two that i
[2:16] find to be particularly
[2:20] practically
[2:22] powerful
[2:24] one is blank
[2:26] that's when it's eyes closed blank when
[2:29] you just tune into the grayscale blank
[2:32] it's always there
[2:34] it's you're looking through images
[2:37] this
[2:38] for me is the most complete
[2:42] rest state
[2:44] because
[2:46] if you are tuning into a rust state to
[2:49] anything in your
[2:52] somatic physical experience
[2:55] there's a high probability you have a
[2:58] subtle visual image of what you're
[3:01] tuning into whether it's a shape of a
[3:03] sensation whether it's a part of your
[3:04] body there's always a kind of
[3:07] accompanying subtle visual
[3:10] to it which can even help you focus but
[3:13] it's there in addition to what you're
[3:15] feeling
[3:16] auditory i mentioned yesterday when we
[3:18] did it most people get an image of what
[3:21] created uh
[3:22] of what creates the sound if it's on the
[3:24] outside
[3:26] inside they might have an image they
[3:27] might see the words
[3:29] but there is often with auditory a
[3:32] subtle sometimes not so subtle visual
[3:35] impression that goes with it
[3:38] blank
[3:40] you're looking through that processing
[3:42] to what physically is there so there is
[3:45] no subtle visual of blank
[3:49] and thus
[3:50] it's a kind of deeper pure rest state
[3:54] and i've heard shenzhen many times refer
[3:58] to rest states as being his
[4:02] re
[4:03] wiring what does he say
[4:06] uh redoing re read something of the
[4:09] jonic factors
[4:10] uh restructuring can't think of his word
[4:13] for the moment uh that he he says he's
[4:18] he he talks about it like it's his
[4:20] homage to the jaundice
[4:23] having done jonas and having done rest
[4:25] states i see very little similarity
[4:28] between them personally except for blank
[4:32] blank because i believe my personal
[4:35] belief is because of the purity of there
[4:37] not being this visual image
[4:39] it takes you more completely and thus
[4:42] blank can be a portal
[4:45] to deeper states and transcendent states
[4:49] and when i did a genre retreat with lee
[4:53] brazington
[4:55] he a
[4:56] lovely john a teacher and in my
[4:59] in my first session with him i think it
[5:01] was i showed him blank i guided him in
[5:03] it
[5:04] i said because he was saying breath was
[5:06] the way to achieve access concentration
[5:08] and i said well i use something else can
[5:09] i show it to you and i showed it to him
[5:11] and he went whoa that just took me right
[5:13] to the seventh genre and i went right
[5:16] cool i go so is that an okay thing to do
[5:18] goes well for you but i'm not going to
[5:20] share it with anybody and i went why not
[5:22] share it away and he's like no because
[5:24] it isn't what i was taught he was taught
[5:26] you only passed down what you've been
[5:28] taught uh i come from shenzhen you try
[5:31] something it works you know you show to
[5:33] shinzo he goes teach it to as many
[5:35] people as you can
[5:36] so i come from a more scientific like
[5:39] what works let's change everything and
[5:41] do that and you've watched shins and
[5:42] systems change everyone who's been here
[5:44] for a while
[5:45] so
[5:46] blank has for me is my quick
[5:49] focusing tool but it's also a portal and
[5:53] i i want to really
[5:56] give an extra
[5:59] encouragement
[6:00] to let blank be your friend if you don't
[6:03] use it a lot i tend to put it in what i
[6:06] call a 10-minute chill meditation i
[6:08] start people off with it which is blank
[6:10] and relax
[6:11] and uh
[6:13] it it helps people they go people come
[6:15] to me and go can you turn this off and i
[6:17] go well
[6:18] you're going to want to change your
[6:19] relationship to that but let's do this
[6:21] and blank can unplug the thinking mind
[6:23] can plug the verbal component of the
[6:25] thinking mind because you're putting all
[6:26] your eggs in the basket of visual and
[6:28] those use two different parts of the
[6:30] brain right that kind of thing um
[6:33] and shinsen then used that as easy rest
[6:36] for first timers on retreats for uh oh i
[6:39] don't know how many years
[6:41] probably 12 15 retreats however many
[6:44] years that is
[6:45] um so blank has a lot of
[6:49] pack for a simple technique so i want to
[6:52] just make sure we appreciate that
[6:54] the other one
[6:56] is relax
[6:58] now
[6:59] relaxes to chill the body relaxes the
[7:02] nervous system isn't that great but one
[7:03] thing i want to mention about relax
[7:07] is that when we're working with emotions
[7:10] and i just mentioned this to somebody
[7:12] and i thought you know what this would
[7:13] be a good thing to mention since i'm
[7:15] going to be guiding
[7:16] a purpose for this
[7:19] we now have in the body feel in feel out
[7:23] it used to be
[7:24] [Music]
[7:26] touch and feel the forward feel and fill
[7:28] out touch used to be sensations that
[7:31] were not emotional in nature and feel
[7:34] was emotional sensations
[7:36] and did i remember to record i did okay
[7:38] cool
[7:41] and i said at the time you know there's
[7:44] something called secondary feel
[7:47] and secondary feel was we get an
[7:50] emotional sensation in the body and if
[7:52] you're here you've probably worked with
[7:53] those a lot and there's this other
[7:56] sensation and i because i went to
[7:57] shenzhen i said is that is that touch or
[8:00] feel these what i was calling secondary
[8:02] feel
[8:02] and it's a kind of tension around the
[8:06] emotion
[8:08] how to know if it's there if you have
[8:10] any judgment however subtle in the mind
[8:12] that that emotion is not a good thing
[8:14] and it's usually anger fear sudden shame
[8:17] if you go
[8:18] don't like it there's a high probability
[8:21] your jaw your shoulders your chest and
[8:24] your belly
[8:27] one if not all of those is tightened
[8:31] and
[8:32] just by relaxing those it's not the same
[8:36] as the anxiety in the chest this is
[8:39] tension you can release
[8:41] but it comes in with the judgment in the
[8:43] mind
[8:44] and it comes in around the emotions and
[8:47] it holds them in place like a setting
[8:49] holds a jewel
[8:51] and just like how a setting holds a
[8:53] jewel you only need one to break away
[8:56] for the jewel to fall out
[8:59] so
[9:00] if you have an emotion look to see if
[9:03] there's any tension around it this is
[9:04] where relax comes in but it's a specific
[9:07] way of using it for
[9:09] kind of subtle tensions that come in
[9:11] around emotions and all you have to do
[9:13] is drop one of these maybe just drop
[9:15] your jaw maybe just let the shoulders
[9:17] relax back and down and then the emotion
[9:19] starts to flow
[9:21] so rest and flow have a relationship
[9:24] like i said rest tends to lead to flow
[9:27] but this is a particular use of rest for
[9:31] coming in when you've got emotions
[9:33] especially intense ones just relaxing
[9:36] the tension around that can help the
[9:38] flow
[9:39] now i'm going to say something about
[9:40] flow
[9:42] flow is
[9:43] i love flow
[9:45] it's maybe my favorite aspect to explore
[9:48] i consider it you know in buddhism they
[9:50] have you watch impermanence and it's a
[9:52] rising and passing and things are going
[9:54] to be born and die
[9:56] and it's like is it coming is it going
[9:59] and i thought what i love about flow is
[10:01] you don't care if it's coming or going
[10:03] it's just the nature of it is moving
[10:06] and you allow that movement to be a kind
[10:08] of massage that to me remember i was
[10:11] talking about enjoy it
[10:13] that to me is a lot more enjoyable than
[10:15] isn't going to die
[10:17] don't get attached because it's going to
[10:19] die right this is like let's just watch
[10:21] the moving changing nature of things
[10:24] and that helps us
[10:28] that helps us have an agility a
[10:30] flexibility of fluidity and adaptability
[10:34] of body and mind that is quite helpful
[10:37] we we can handle change better right
[10:42] um
[10:43] so
[10:44] uh and it leads to creativity
[10:48] playfulness enjoyment
[10:50] and it's also key to processing emotions
[10:53] i just mentioned how you can get the
[10:55] tension out of the way to help it to
[10:57] flow but the emotions are there emotions
[11:00] are natural it's part of the human
[11:01] condition
[11:03] uh
[11:04] i believe shinzon says emotions are
[11:06] there to motivate and direct our
[11:09] behavior
[11:10] but when we don't let them flow on
[11:12] through they end up you know we stick
[11:15] them in the drawer like i'm really good
[11:16] at compartmentalizing my family just
[11:18] said that to me like oh he's good at
[11:20] that and i went yeah that's a good short
[11:23] term fix
[11:25] long term it's going to give you atrial
[11:27] fibrillation or whatever which is what
[11:29] he had and i went see
[11:31] you know you want to let it flow on
[11:33] through that's the purification process
[11:36] and um
[11:38] he he will say emotions are there to
[11:40] motivate and direct your behavior
[11:42] but if you don't let them flow on
[11:44] through
[11:46] they
[11:46] just they're down there
[11:49] but they're down there and still there
[11:52] they distort
[11:54] your perception
[11:56] and thus
[11:57] behavior
[11:59] and
[12:00] happiness
[12:01] so i want to mention that and the last
[12:04] thing i want to mention before i guide
[12:05] you on a ride and then i'll i see a chat
[12:07] i'll go to that then
[12:09] but rest and flow together are kind of a
[12:13] key
[12:14] combination it's a one-two punch that
[12:16] can just kind of annihilate and soften
[12:20] and process anything that comes up
[12:23] rest and flow are also
[12:26] you know someone said to me what's an
[12:28] equanimity practice i go rest and flow
[12:30] do i go there
[12:33] but
[12:34] if you're
[12:37] guiding someone through the dying
[12:38] process
[12:40] rest and flow
[12:42] are your friends
[12:45] they're pretty good for the living
[12:46] process too
[12:48] uh i had and this is what i forgot to
[12:51] say that i thought why did my dharma
[12:52] talk be so short i had a whole section i
[12:54] forgot about i was going to talk about i
[12:55] had panic attacks most of my life since
[12:58] i was a small child actually i didn't
[13:00] know i was having them until they left
[13:02] but the key to a
[13:06] this is a belief although it's kind of
[13:08] my experience that
[13:11] the energy that was the anxiety that
[13:14] created these
[13:15] debilitating panic attacks
[13:19] is the same energy i'm coming to you
[13:23] with now
[13:25] it's just i took away the resistance
[13:27] that secondary feel
[13:29] i looked at that let that flow
[13:32] and so rest and flow for how i converted
[13:36] panic attacks to a productive creative
[13:42] kind loving energy
[13:44] so
[13:45] don't underestimate rest and flow
[13:50] that's what i'm going to say about them
[13:51] before i guide
[13:53] that was my little spiel on that now let
[13:55] me look to see
[13:56] what message i have if any questions
[13:58] come up oh
[13:59] thank you thank you my dear
[14:01] okay
[14:03] so now we're going to take a ride
[14:09] so get in a comfortable position let me
[14:12] just move everything around here
[14:14] okay
[14:15] so get in a comfortable position
[14:20] get settled this is going to be a longer
[14:22] meditation maybe not as long as
[14:23] yesterday but
[14:25] it's going to be a longer meditation so
[14:27] this is a
[14:29] buckle your seat belt adjust your tray
[14:31] table to the upright position
[14:34] and before i ring the bell
[14:38] and i'll start with three rings of the
[14:39] bell and i'll end with one
[14:44] lets us all together
[14:47] take a nice deep breath in
[14:50] in a big luxurious sigh out
[14:55] and just let go of whatever lets go
[15:01] feeling the body in this moment
[15:06] allowing the momentum of your practice
[15:08] already to continue
[15:11] and allow the sound of the bell
[15:15] to flow
[15:17] into
[15:19] that settled body
[15:22] [Music]
[15:30] [Laughter]
[15:43] [Music]
[15:51] [Laughter]
[15:53] [Music]
[15:59] so take another nice deep breath in and
[16:02] as you do stretch up the spine in a way
[16:04] that feels good
[16:06] and on the breath out let everything
[16:08] else just hang down from that
[16:12] so the spine's going up in the middle
[16:14] stretching
[16:15] play with the sits bones how they are in
[16:17] the chair maybe let them dig down and
[16:20] kind of dig forward a little bit tilting
[16:23] the pelvis back just a bit
[16:25] and from there that creates more space
[16:27] in the small of the back
[16:29] stretching up from there
[16:32] just like when you stretch in the bed in
[16:34] the morning a luxurious stretch
[16:37] you're taller than you think you are
[16:38] more space in the back of the neck
[16:43] let the head balance easily and lightly
[16:46] on top
[16:49] almost as it's lifting upwards like a
[16:52] helium balloon it's light
[16:59] and let it just slide towards the wall
[17:02] behind you oh a half inch maybe an inch
[17:05] and as it does that's going to open up
[17:07] your shoulders
[17:09] and if you arch your back when you do
[17:11] that tuck that
[17:13] the sits bones down and forward again
[17:15] creating that space and the small of the
[17:17] back
[17:20] and notice if you're holding your breath
[17:22] and can you soften the belly
[17:26] ah just let the breath drop down into a
[17:30] soft belly
[17:36] let the jaw drop
[17:39] just let gravity take the jaw
[17:43] there should be a good amount of space
[17:45] between your teeth between the upper and
[17:47] lower teeth
[17:52] take another nice breath in breath out
[17:55] and on the breath out feel that spread
[17:58] of release throughout the whole body we
[18:00] did yesterday you'll feel a tangible
[18:03] release and during the exhalation and
[18:06] even after the breath is over that
[18:07] release may seem to continue
[18:10] throughout the body maybe even
[18:13] pushing the boundaries of the body in a
[18:15] soft way
[18:21] letting that wave of release on every
[18:23] breath out be a kind of massage
[18:31] and that sensation
[18:33] that wave of release on the breath out
[18:35] we're going to do it again in a moment
[18:37] but that's
[18:38] feel rest
[18:40] that's one flavor of feel rest
[18:49] dropping the jaw what that feels like
[18:52] that's feel rest
[18:58] letting the weight
[19:00] of your arms
[19:02] just hanging at your side
[19:04] they kind of help pull the shoulders
[19:06] down
[19:08] and you can tune into the shoulders
[19:10] releasing is feel rest
[19:19] you can tune into muscles that aren't
[19:21] having to work that ease in the muscles
[19:24] that we rarely notice
[19:28] we tend to only notice muscles when
[19:30] they're tight
[19:32] or sore
[19:33] or injured or in use
[19:38] do you ever notice your muscles
[19:40] when they're just hanging out
[19:44] your legs don't need to carry your body
[19:46] weight right now
[19:48] what do those muscles feel like when
[19:50] they're not doing anything and if that's
[19:53] too subtle and difficult to tune into
[19:55] you can always
[19:57] tense something and release it through
[19:59] contrast sometimes we can
[20:01] see things more clearly
[20:08] so just feeling the ease and the muscles
[20:10] that don't have to work and the legs and
[20:13] arms especially
[20:18] and the more we're able to allow
[20:21] the balanced spine to support us we
[20:24] start to feel that ease in the neck
[20:28] and the belly
[20:29] and the face
[20:30] we don't need to use those as much when
[20:33] we when we are forward those muscles
[20:35] have to engage
[20:38] and the more we allow our spine to
[20:40] support us the more we can
[20:42] just let everything else hang down from
[20:44] that feel rest
[20:55] so feel rest is tuning into ease that's
[20:58] naturally present you just go ah my body
[21:01] feels settled to feel rest
[21:04] the arms muscles and arms and legs don't
[21:06] work ah aren't having to work
[21:12] that ease that's feel rest
[21:19] you can deliberately it's the only thing
[21:21] we can deliberately cultivate
[21:23] mindfulness is just kind of looking at
[21:24] your sensory experience without
[21:26] interfering but the one thing you have
[21:28] permission to
[21:29] to give a boost to is relaxation is
[21:33] letting go is feel rest
[21:37] so we can drop the jaw
[21:40] we can adjust the posture so we can
[21:42] release more muscles
[21:46] feel rest
[21:50] we can let the belly be soft
[21:55] letting the breath just drop down into a
[21:58] soft belly feel rest
[22:11] and i'm gonna guide my three breath
[22:13] exercise we did yesterday i just
[22:15] referred to the third breath just now
[22:17] but we're just gonna do it in sequence
[22:19] because it's really
[22:21] a sequence of feel rest
[22:26] and they all involve taking big breaths
[22:28] in in big size out
[22:31] but everything we do with a big breath
[22:34] in and big sigh out
[22:37] is available on every breath it's just
[22:40] subtler
[22:42] i use the bigger breasts
[22:45] to give us something more tangible
[22:47] to feel
[22:50] but if your momentum of sensory clarity
[22:52] at this point in the retreat is present
[22:54] you can just do this with a regular
[22:55] breath
[22:58] but for now if you want to follow me
[23:00] you take a big pleasurable breath in big
[23:03] sigh out and notice what
[23:05] naturally let's go
[23:08] big breath in
[23:15] you can do that as many times as you
[23:17] like
[23:21] and for most people what releases there
[23:24] is not the kind of thing we think to let
[23:26] go of
[23:28] it's often a release in the front of the
[23:30] torso just below the ribs where the
[23:32] diaphragm is
[23:34] we feel kind of a release there it's
[23:37] nothing we thought of as tight
[23:40] but when we breathe out there might be
[23:42] something there there might be a wave of
[23:43] something that comes up the body
[23:46] a place of habitual tension may release
[23:49] but just notice what let's go and where
[23:52] you feel it
[23:53] what that sensation feels like
[24:02] and then the second big breath in and
[24:04] out
[24:06] the second way of focusing on a big
[24:08] breath in and out
[24:11] is to deliberately let go of something
[24:14] you pick
[24:15] you choose whatever you think would be
[24:18] juicy or you'd like it could be your
[24:20] neck your shoulders your jaw your belly
[24:22] your chest a thought anything
[24:25] you pick something to let go of on this
[24:28] big breath in and out
[24:33] feel it let go on the breath out
[24:40] notice how that was different maybe more
[24:42] satisfying
[24:46] it was the same
[24:49] notice what let go and what that felt
[24:51] like
[24:56] and then the third breath is the magic
[24:59] this is the one i just stop and do at
[25:00] any time in the day and i just kind of
[25:02] mentioned it
[25:04] as we were settling in
[25:07] but you split your focus holding two
[25:09] things at the same time
[25:12] and
[25:13] 25 maybe 30
[25:15] of your focus is on what
[25:17] releases on the breath out whether it
[25:19] was what released naturally on the first
[25:21] breath whether it's what you chose to
[25:24] let go of on your second brother or
[25:25] something
[25:27] but else
[25:28] third a fourth of your attention is on a
[25:30] tangible
[25:32] release on the breath out and we'll
[25:34] notice this during the exhalation and
[25:36] even after
[25:38] and then the rest of your attention is
[25:41] spread over the whole body to the outer
[25:44] boundary holding all of body space
[25:48] and if you're an old-timer you'd
[25:50] recognize local global as a phrase it's
[25:52] like a an egg there's the yolk of the
[25:54] egg is local and the white of the egg is
[25:57] global the yolk of the egg would be what
[25:59] releases the white would be the rest of
[26:01] the body except the white's a lot bigger
[26:03] than the yolk in this case
[26:06] and you watch the whole body and notice
[26:09] just is there
[26:12] a subtle wave spread of softening out
[26:15] from that tangible release
[26:18] that waves out into the whole body and
[26:20] yes that's flow but we're going to look
[26:21] at it as rest here
[26:23] because it's a moving rest and a lot of
[26:26] rest is moving that's why rest and flow
[26:28] are so integrated
[26:31] and that
[26:32] spread out my analogy for that
[26:35] is like dropping a pebble into a pond
[26:38] it's just a pebble there's a tiny little
[26:41] splash
[26:42] but there's a ripple or two or three out
[26:45] into the water
[26:49] and you're the water
[26:51] and allow this
[26:54] tangible release to create
[26:56] this subtle spread wave ripple out into
[27:00] the water of you
[27:03] continuing out
[27:05] during the exhalation and after
[27:13] and feel the restfulness of that
[27:22] feel rest
[27:30] so you can allow your attention to move
[27:33] freely in the body space
[27:36] noting any instance of feel rest any of
[27:39] the things i've pointed out
[27:42] you can hang with one for as many labels
[27:45] as you want
[27:47] we could move and just notice qualities
[27:50] of feel rest
[27:52] you could spread out over the whole body
[27:55] and notice all these little places of
[27:57] feel rest and kind of get a global feel
[27:59] rest
[28:01] and for the next couple minutes
[28:04] and i'm using double labels i'm using
[28:06] feel rest since we're going to be doing
[28:08] two modalities
[28:10] we're going to be doing rest and flow
[28:14] so you can use the label feel but for
[28:16] here today i'm going to guide it is feel
[28:18] rest
[28:23] labels in a matter of fact tone
[28:26] with irregular rhythm
[28:28] they can be vocal out loud
[28:31] they can be to yourself in your head
[28:34] or if you already have a momentum of
[28:37] focus you can drop labeling altogether
[28:41] feel rest
[28:46] fearless
[29:13] and with every label
[29:16] the body settles a little more
[29:21] drops down into a deeper relaxation
[29:26] feel rest
[29:28] just surrender
[29:30] to that release that letting go that
[29:33] ease
[29:35] feel rest
[30:38] and as you're tuning in to feel rest
[30:42] there's no reason to not enjoy it
[30:45] what feels good
[30:48] about the restfulness in your body
[30:51] maybe at a location
[30:54] maybe over the whole body
[30:58] can you enjoy the letting go the release
[31:02] the ease it's not an assignment
[31:05] it's just to notice
[31:07] is it pleasant
[31:10] can you enjoy that settling of the body
[31:14] feel rest
[32:00] now add
[32:02] to the possible
[32:05] experiences in the body that you could
[32:07] notice feel rest
[32:09] add
[32:13] if you are emotionally neutral in other
[32:16] words if you have no
[32:18] emotional sensations present
[32:22] many of us always have something kind of
[32:25] churning in the background
[32:28] is a kind of
[32:30] low level
[32:33] combination of pleasant unpleasant
[32:35] that's kind of always present
[32:37] might just be part of being alive
[32:41] but you can drop into moments
[32:43] where you feel no emotion
[32:47] it's absolutely neutral
[32:50] you could note that as feel rest
[32:55] in addition to everything else we're
[32:57] noting
[32:58] the release
[32:59] ease
[33:00] relaxation
[33:02] letting go in the body
[33:08] feel rest
[34:15] and whenever we tune into rest states
[34:19] particularly feel rest
[34:21] there's a chance
[34:24] a possibility
[34:26] of the mind getting sleepy
[34:30] we're all a little sleep deprived
[34:34] the starbucks has such a good business
[34:38] so if you're that sleep deprived or
[34:41] sometimes
[34:42] we've just been conditioned if we close
[34:44] our eyes and relax the body that means
[34:46] go to sleep
[34:48] and you've been meditating for a while
[34:49] and you may have worked through that
[34:51] conditioning but it can still sometimes
[34:54] happen
[34:55] so if you find yourself kind of what we
[34:58] call sinking mind where the mind starts
[35:00] to get a little foggy and the body
[35:02] starts to wilt forward a little bit and
[35:04] sleep starts to feel really like a
[35:07] delicious option
[35:08] a real wonderful antidote for that is
[35:11] that stretching up at the spine
[35:14] when you stretch up a spine an energy
[35:17] goes up the spine that activates a part
[35:19] of the brain called the reticular
[35:21] activating system that wakes up your
[35:23] mind
[35:24] creating an alpha state
[35:28] so if you find yourself getting sleepy
[35:30] that stretch up and let that stretch
[35:32] feel good
[35:34] but stretching up the spine will wake up
[35:37] the mind
[35:38] and then on the breath out let
[35:40] everything hang down from that and note
[35:43] that as feel rest
[35:46] or just keep noting feel rest from
[35:48] wherever you are
[35:50] feel rest
[36:31] and for our last moment here of feel
[36:34] rest
[36:35] just
[36:36] scan through the body and see is there
[36:39] something you could let go of
[36:43] maybe it's something you let go of a
[36:44] minute ago but you know what the jaw is
[36:46] tight again
[36:48] what can you let go of is there
[36:50] something that can be released
[36:53] if not fine
[36:56] it just is a last little
[36:58] oh yeah i can let go of that
[37:01] i can release that
[37:23] good
[37:26] now
[37:27] allow any momentum of relaxation
[37:31] release ease letting go in the body to
[37:35] continue naturally on its own the body
[37:38] will like this the body will say thank
[37:41] you very much and just keep doing it
[37:44] and move your attention to your visual
[37:46] experience with your eyes closed
[37:51] and here's where we're going to tune
[37:53] into that grayscale blank i talked about
[37:56] so just allow your awareness to park
[37:59] behind your closed eyes into this blank
[38:02] field
[38:05] light from the outside may create a
[38:07] lightness on the lid from that direction
[38:11] if images from the thought process come
[38:13] up just look through them or around them
[38:15] to what you physically see
[38:21] and ignore color
[38:24] just let it be a gray scale
[38:28] just noticing lightness and darkness
[38:35] maybe you park in a direction just right
[38:38] in front of you regardless of what's
[38:40] there
[38:43] maybe you have these blobs and patches
[38:45] of lighter darker areas that move and
[38:49] shift like a lava lamp maybe you just
[38:51] park in a light patch or a dark patch
[38:59] maybe you
[39:03] expand your awareness to hold the whole
[39:06] field in awareness
[39:11] whatever is most restful for you in this
[39:14] moment
[39:15] do that
[39:18] with the label
[39:20] with or without the label
[39:23] see
[39:27] rest see rest
[39:32] just park
[39:34] your attention
[39:35] in that
[39:37] gray scale blank
[39:41] see rest
[40:36] this is a resting place for the mind
[40:41] sea rest
[41:11] if your mind wanders
[41:13] or you get distracted
[41:15] bring in labels
[41:18] vocal labels out loud one advantage of a
[41:21] zoom retreat you can do all the out loud
[41:23] labeling you want
[41:28] labels are like first gear of a car
[41:30] helps you get up this most powerful
[41:33] helps you get up this steep
[41:35] hill
[41:38] and a distracted mind is like a steep
[41:41] hill pull out the vocal labels
[41:44] and just park rest your attention
[41:48] in blank
[41:50] see rest
[41:56] see rest
[42:57] good
[42:59] we'll come back to this
[43:01] but we're just gonna for a moment
[43:03] explore see rest with eyes open
[43:08] so gently
[43:09] open your eyes and notice how the world
[43:12] of color and form and shapes and objects
[43:15] comes in and pulls you and might affect
[43:17] an emotional response in the body to see
[43:20] it
[43:21] and just the opening of the eyes
[43:22] especially when you've gone deep can
[43:25] be a little vulnerable so take a nice
[43:27] breath in and let the
[43:29] relaxation in the body happen as you
[43:32] open the eyes
[43:34] and then allow
[43:36] your focus to go
[43:39] soft
[43:41] so that you're looking through the world
[43:43] not at it
[43:47] it's the way artists look at paintings
[43:50] to get a sense of the composition
[43:52] it's a little kind of maybe blurring a
[43:54] vision but it's a little soft focus
[44:02] and some meditation traditions they call
[44:04] this far mountain gazing
[44:08] looking through the world not at it
[44:16] and as you do that
[44:18] any response you had when opening your
[44:20] eyes softens
[44:23] you can notice a kind of
[44:26] chill in the body when you open the eyes
[44:28] and soften the focus
[44:34] in native american traditions they call
[44:36] this spirit eyes
[44:38] because after someone's been in ceremony
[44:40] with no food or water in a sacred way
[44:45] they come back
[44:46] looking through you
[44:48] not at you
[44:54] they're with spirit
[44:59] see rest with the eyes open soft focus
[45:05] see rest
[46:33] good
[46:35] we'll come back to that too
[46:38] now close your eyes
[46:43] and move your attention
[46:46] to your auditory experience
[46:50] let's start with hearing out
[46:53] into sound space this huge space in all
[46:56] directions to the right to the left and
[46:59] front and back above below
[47:03] you might think of it as a huge sphere
[47:05] of sound space
[47:07] although it may not be a sphere
[47:10] and in this larger sound space
[47:14] if you think of it as this huge space
[47:16] there may be little pockets of activity
[47:19] that we'll call sound
[47:21] my voice will be one
[47:24] and then whole other areas
[47:26] are going to have silence
[47:29] now can you hear silence if sound is
[47:32] happening in another direction that may
[47:35] seem impossible but you could just give
[47:36] it a shot
[47:39] what's that like it's kind of like how
[47:42] artists tune into negative space
[47:47] just be aware of where there are pockets
[47:49] of silence in the sound space around you
[47:52] as best you can
[48:03] and sometimes a way to do that is
[48:05] identify where all the sounds are in
[48:08] what direction how much quantity of
[48:10] sound space they take
[48:12] and then look everywhere else
[48:15] negative space
[48:19] hear rest
[48:25] here rest
[49:09] and if there is no hear rest that you
[49:11] can detect
[49:13] you always have feel rest to go back to
[49:16] at any given moment that's your when in
[49:18] doubt feel rest
[49:21] we're just exploring auditory if you can
[49:26] hearing out hear us
[49:44] and now
[49:45] include
[49:48] moving to
[49:50] your internal talk space maybe just move
[49:54] our attention to talk space
[49:56] there's either words
[49:58] or mumbling some kind of activity
[50:02] or there's not
[50:05] and if there's no activity you can note
[50:08] that is hear rest
[50:11] you can also note if you have a low
[50:14] level hum like a white noise that
[50:18] doesn't shift or change it's kind of a
[50:20] steady kind of
[50:22] not unpleasant white noise that can be
[50:25] very restful for some people
[50:28] and since we're tuning into restfulness
[50:31] you could call that hear rest
[50:35] so here rest will be silence on the
[50:38] outside even if sound is present
[50:41] or
[50:43] lack of internal talk
[50:45] or maybe you just hear a low level very
[50:49] restful
[50:50] white noise
[50:53] so play with here rest
[50:59] just noting it
[51:01] any instance of it
[51:09] and hear rest
[51:11] rest in here whether in or out
[51:14] unlike
[51:15] see and feel it's something that isn't
[51:18] always available to everyone
[51:21] so whenever you're working with here you
[51:23] want another option
[51:25] i could give you here here rest
[51:27] but i want to just keep us in with
[51:29] restfulness today so if there is
[51:32] absolutely no here rest
[51:35] the mind is chatting
[51:37] there are sounds and no silence on the
[51:39] outside
[51:40] then just allow feel rest to be the
[51:43] default but after every label of feel
[51:46] rest look up to see
[51:48] is there any instance of hearest
[51:52] hear rest
[51:56] [Music]
[52:20] now some people
[52:23] even if there's talk in the head they
[52:26] can listen through or around it to a
[52:29] kind of
[52:31] quiet kind of parallel to
[52:34] how we can look through and around
[52:36] mental images to blank
[52:38] except this might be a little more
[52:40] difficult for some people to do blank is
[52:43] pretty easy
[52:45] many people described doing what we call
[52:47] blank when they were small children
[52:49] before they went to sleep at night but
[52:52] hearing
[52:53] quiet in and around and through internal
[52:56] talk
[52:58] everyone
[52:59] can't
[53:01] have that experience so just notice if
[53:03] that experience is available to you
[53:06] as you explore any instance of hear rest
[53:15] here rest
[53:37] and for the next couple minutes
[53:43] and allow your attention to move between
[53:46] feel rest
[53:48] see rest hear rest however feels good
[53:51] for you
[53:53] whatever is available for you
[53:57] you can do this with eyes open eyes
[53:59] closed
[54:04] feel rest relaxation ease letting go in
[54:07] the body maybe absence of emotional
[54:10] sensation
[54:12] see rest with the eyes closed the blank
[54:14] field with the eyes open a soft focus
[54:18] in both cases not attaching to form or
[54:21] meaning of any visual
[54:23] experience and hear rest
[54:26] where we're noticing an absence
[54:29] of sound or internal talk
[54:32] or maybe an always present
[54:35] silence
[54:37] even if sound or internal talk is
[54:40] present
[54:42] so whatever is available for you
[54:46] allow yourself to do as many labels in
[54:48] one as you like
[54:50] feel
[54:51] rest see rest
[54:54] hear us
[56:43] good allow any momentum of restfulness
[56:47] in the body to continue
[56:51] and take a moment to stretch up again
[56:55] maybe just wiggle a little bit
[57:00] as we shift
[57:02] our focus we're going to look at the
[57:04] same areas but with a different light
[57:10] big breath in big sigh out
[57:14] feeling that wave of release that we've
[57:17] been noting is rest
[57:19] we can now tune into that same wave of
[57:23] release except we note it as flow
[57:26] it's the same experience the first time
[57:30] we're appreciating the restfulness of it
[57:33] the release of it
[57:35] the second time with flow we're
[57:37] appreciating the movement of it the
[57:40] massage of it
[57:43] so notice
[57:45] at this moment because we just did a lot
[57:48] of restful exploration
[57:51] that sometimes naturally creates a
[57:54] particular kind of flow in the body like
[57:57] vibration
[58:00] or undulation so if you have anything we
[58:03] might call energy or vibration
[58:06] undulation wave-like movement
[58:09] any kind of spreading collapsing
[58:13] the body might not feel very solid it
[58:15] might feel fluid
[58:17] if anything like that is present in the
[58:20] body
[58:21] we'll call that feel flow
[58:24] and we might be looking at the exact
[58:27] same thing we looked at with rest
[58:29] except now we're appreciating the moving
[58:33] changing quality of it
[58:36] as a massage
[58:41] and the one place where flow in the body
[58:45] is always available
[58:48] is the
[58:49] breath
[58:51] just the movement of the breath you
[58:53] breathe in air and there's an expansion
[58:56] in the torso
[58:58] and you breathe out and there's a lovely
[59:00] collapsing
[59:03] that movement of the breath as it fills
[59:06] the lungs the diaphragm goes down and
[59:09] pushes the internal organs out
[59:13] and when you let go the diaphragm
[59:16] releases
[59:18] to its dome shape pushing the air out
[59:20] and the internal organs come back in so
[59:23] the movement of the breath
[59:25] naturally massages all of your internal
[59:29] organs
[59:31] so when you breathe deeply you're
[59:33] helping your internal organs function
[59:35] better they're getting a massage to help
[59:38] them be healthy you digest better
[59:41] you process food better
[59:44] your kidneys your liver everything
[59:46] functions better
[59:48] with this massaging movement of the
[59:51] breath from the inside
[59:54] and here
[59:55] we can tune into that massaging movement
[59:58] is a pleasant massage
[1:00:01] that we feel allowing ourselves to be
[1:00:05] massaged by the breathing process
[1:00:11] it happens naturally
[1:00:14] it's a wave of release from the inside
[1:00:18] and allow any movement
[1:00:21] associated with the breathing process
[1:00:25] to be a kind of massage
[1:00:30] softening
[1:00:45] feel flow
[1:00:55] feel flow
[1:01:04] and you might detect the movement of the
[1:01:06] breath coming in and out of the nostrils
[1:01:08] or the mouth depending what you're
[1:01:10] breathing out of
[1:01:11] cool air coming in warm air cooling out
[1:01:14] coming out but you feel that movement
[1:01:19] let that movement of the breath flowing
[1:01:21] in and out of the body it's a kind of
[1:01:24] massage
[1:01:29] so you may have energy flowing through
[1:01:31] the body
[1:01:34] you may have the movement of the breath
[1:01:39] or any other sensation in the body may
[1:01:42] be moving or changing in any way
[1:01:46] whenever we tune into the body there may
[1:01:48] be pleasant sensations unpleasant
[1:01:51] neutral try to have no preference but
[1:01:54] just notice if there's movement in any
[1:01:57] of those
[1:01:58] and get fascinated by the movement
[1:02:04] all movement is a massage
[1:02:07] just open to it the restfulness helps us
[1:02:10] open relax and receive the massage of
[1:02:13] flow
[1:02:18] feel flow
[1:03:10] and add to this
[1:03:12] any movement of emotional sensations
[1:03:17] when we relax around them
[1:03:19] with that relax that tension around them
[1:03:22] emotions naturally flow
[1:03:25] so if any emotion arises
[1:03:28] notice how it's moving or changing
[1:03:31] and the prime directive with any
[1:03:34] sensation in the body
[1:03:37] actually the prime directive with
[1:03:39] anything
[1:03:41] is to let it move however it wants to
[1:03:44] move
[1:03:48] like it's a living creature that needs
[1:03:50] to dance its dance let it
[1:03:54] and feel that movement as flow
[1:03:57] feel flow
[1:05:03] let yourself be massaged
[1:05:07] by any movement in the body you always
[1:05:10] have the movement of the breath and
[1:05:13] any wave of release
[1:05:15] is flow
[1:05:17] feel flow
[1:05:54] good
[1:05:56] now move your attention to your visual
[1:05:59] experience
[1:06:02] and there's a lot of phenomena you may
[1:06:04] see we have blank
[1:06:08] and if you're
[1:06:09] hanging out in blank before we notice
[1:06:12] there may be blobs or patches moving
[1:06:14] kind of like a lava lamp
[1:06:19] let that be a kind of visual massage we
[1:06:22] watch fish and tanks and lava lamps for
[1:06:24] a reason there's something intrinsically
[1:06:26] pleasant about that
[1:06:30] maybe the whole fabric of your visual
[1:06:32] field is like a grainy film kind of
[1:06:34] twinkly
[1:06:36] vibratory
[1:06:37] let that be a kind of massage
[1:06:42] or if you have colors shapes geometric
[1:06:45] patterns even if images come in and out
[1:06:48] rather than noting what the image is of
[1:06:52] rather than identifying an object it's
[1:06:54] just colors and shapes moving the image
[1:06:57] comes in the image goes out images tend
[1:07:00] to rarely be stable
[1:07:02] and often the edge of the image will
[1:07:04] flicker in and out so just notice the
[1:07:06] movement
[1:07:08] of this visual component of the thinking
[1:07:10] process
[1:07:12] and let it be a visual massage
[1:07:17] there is something intrinsically
[1:07:20] pleasant to us as human beings it
[1:07:22] watching visual movement with no meaning
[1:07:26] it's why we like looking at fires
[1:07:29] sparkling light on water
[1:07:32] stars
[1:07:34] kind of relaxes our nervous system
[1:07:39] so just let yourself be fascinated and
[1:07:42] massaged by any visual movement that may
[1:07:46] be present for you at this time
[1:07:48] sea flow
[1:07:53] sea flow
[1:09:03] and if no flow is available visually you
[1:09:06] can always go back to the movement of
[1:09:08] the breath
[1:09:10] is a feel flow but then
[1:09:13] after each label go back up and look at
[1:09:15] visual and see if there is any flow plus
[1:09:18] present
[1:09:20] usually flow in the visual field is
[1:09:24] available
[1:09:25] but just
[1:09:28] explore see what's present for you
[1:09:31] letting any movement
[1:09:33] be a visual massage
[1:10:26] good
[1:10:29] and now move your attention to your
[1:10:32] auditory experience both out and in
[1:10:36] in any movement happening including the
[1:10:39] sound of my voice
[1:10:43] so sound in a way is vibration
[1:10:47] but we don't always tune into the moving
[1:10:49] changing quality of it
[1:10:52] we're usually identifying what the sound
[1:10:54] is what it means
[1:10:57] what if we listen to sound the way
[1:10:59] babies do
[1:11:00] it's just movement happening
[1:11:03] there will be pitch there will be
[1:11:05] duration rhythm frequency quality timbre
[1:11:11] you'll notice that
[1:11:12] but we're just tuning into the moving
[1:11:15] nature
[1:11:16] of sound on the outside as a kind of
[1:11:19] massage for now it might just be my
[1:11:22] voice
[1:11:24] or any voice in your head even if it's
[1:11:27] just that kind of rumbling in fact
[1:11:29] especially if it's that kind of
[1:11:32] rumbling mumbling
[1:11:34] something's percolating don't know what
[1:11:37] what if you tuned into that is an
[1:11:41] auditory massage
[1:11:48] and if there's nothing available you can
[1:11:51] always go to see flow or he feel flow
[1:11:55] but for now explore
[1:11:57] hear flow
[1:11:59] any movement changing something might
[1:12:02] get more intense volume might get louder
[1:12:05] lower
[1:12:07] arise fall
[1:12:11] change direction
[1:12:14] change quality
[1:12:16] any movement or change in your auditory
[1:12:20] experience
[1:12:22] hear flow
[1:13:27] and now allow your attention
[1:13:31] to move between sea flow
[1:13:34] hear flow and feel flow
[1:13:37] although flow is a unifier so
[1:13:40] distinctions and boundaries may melt a
[1:13:43] little bit with flow and that's fine you
[1:13:46] can just move into a kind of all flow
[1:13:51] normally we just pick one and let
[1:13:53] everything else be in the background but
[1:13:55] with flow
[1:13:57] just let anything that wants to move
[1:14:00] move however it wants to move
[1:14:03] and as best you can experience it as a
[1:14:06] massage
[1:14:26] allowing yourself to be massaged
[1:14:31] by feel flow you always have the
[1:14:34] movement of the breath
[1:14:36] sea flow that's available to most people
[1:14:39] and you can pick one and just park in it
[1:14:42] you can move between them
[1:14:45] or you can kind of spread your attention
[1:14:47] out and maybe hold all three fields at
[1:14:49] the same time
[1:14:51] just allowing any
[1:14:55] movement to be a kind of massage
[1:14:58] allowing yourself to be massaged by flow
[1:15:03] feel flow
[1:15:05] see flow
[1:15:07] hear flow
[1:15:09] or all flow
[1:16:49] so now the flow fest does not have to
[1:16:52] end there's no reason it
[1:16:57] needs to
[1:16:59] you can allow it to continue for the
[1:17:01] rest of your day
[1:17:05] even though we're bringing this
[1:17:06] meditation to a close
[1:17:11] that doesn't mean you stop flowing
[1:17:14] we're experiencing all movement is a
[1:17:17] massage
[1:17:22] and i invite you to allow
[1:17:25] the sound of the bell
[1:17:28] to be an auditory flow that comes in and
[1:17:31] dances with the
[1:17:33] flow fest you have going now
[1:17:39] [Music]
[1:17:54] uh
[1:18:11] hmm
