Guru Ram Das Live in Gdańsk: A Mantra Returns After 15 Years

Snatam Kaur

読了 約3分

出典:Snatam Kaur

A 38-second clip from Snatam Kaur, captured live in Gdańsk, Poland, is a small window onto a devotional melody that went quiet for about fifteen years and then came back. The song is "Guru Ram Das," a mantra she has known since childhood and later shaped into a melody for her third album, Shanti, released in 2003. The clip itself is brief. The story she tells around it, in the video's description, is where the meaning sits.

Why did a song set aside for fifteen years feel like it needed to return?

Kaur's account begins at night, with a stepfather singing the mantra to a little girl. She writes that she "found a sense of safety and comfort in the words," and she kept returning to them through her teenage years, into adulthood and motherhood, especially in hard times. She describes the mantra as something that "could shift something in me when I needed it most."

The melody became a fixture of her concerts. She performed it "countless times over the years" and shared it with audiences around the world before setting it aside. Then, in her words, she "felt drawn to sing it again." That return is what this recording documents.

The live version was recorded in Gdańsk on April 11, 2026. Earlier that day, Kaur walked through woods near the sea and felt connected to the natural world around her, a feeling that carried into the evening. In the description she notes "a beautiful sense of connection between the band and the audience and the elements," and says the song "seemed to create a space of stillness and peace in the room."

Live recordings like this one carry something studio takes can't: the room itself becomes part of the sound. Kaur was struck by hearing the song "carried by so many voices," which is the essence of devotional singing. A mantra is repeated, shared, and passed along, and the audience becomes a participant rather than a listener. In the wider practice of kirtan, which Kaur is known for, that call-and-response quality is central, and it explains why she closes the clip by hoping viewers are singing along.

Where to go from here

The fuller performance is available on Kaur's channel, and the recording can be streamed wherever you usually listen to music. If the mantra is new to you, the most direct way into it is the one she suggests: sing along. As she puts it, "We are together always, in the music."

The clip is short, but the arc it points to is long: a lullaby, a concert staple, a long silence, and a return made in a seaside city in Poland. That arc is worth hearing in full.
