In a quiet space of your own making, you sit or lie down and close your eyes. A simple instruction arrives: imagine roots extending from the base of your spine deep into the earth, reaching all the way to the molten lava core. Feel the stability beneath you. Then bring your awareness upward, to your heart center, where a warm glowing light already lives—your source of love and healing energy. This is the architecture of distance healing meditation: grounding the body, illuminating the heart, and then directing that inner light outward to those who need it, or inward to yourself.

Distance healing has roots in several contemplative traditions—reiki, energy work, and heart-centered prayer practices all share a common premise: that love, intention, and healing are not bound by physical proximity. You can direct them across a room or around the world. Kelly Collins's guided meditation distills this principle into a practical 9-minute practice that teaches both the mechanics of sending healing energy and the equally important skill of receiving it.

What Is Distance Healing Energy?

Distance healing operates on the understanding that consciousness and intention can extend beyond the body. In this meditation, you begin by anchoring yourself physically—rooting down through the feet or base of the spine—before expanding energetically outward. Collins guides you to "tap into the universal energy of love and compassion," a concept that appears across energy healing frameworks and contemplative traditions. The universal energy she references is understood not as mystical or supernatural, but as a field of love and connection available to anyone willing to quiet their mind and direct their attention.

The practice acknowledges a crucial distinction: you are not generating healing energy from nothing. Instead, you are channeling or drawing upon an existing universal source. With each inhale in the meditation, you "pull in more of this healing energy from the universe," and with each exhale, you "send this energy out to that person, place, or situation." This rhythm—receive, then give—mirrors the natural cycles of breath and prevents the common pitfall of depleting your own reserves while attempting to heal others.

How Does the Meditation Guide You to Send Healing?

The sending portion of the practice begins with visualization. You are invited to call to mind the person, place, or situation requiring healing and to picture them in your mind's eye. Collins then directs you to "imagine them surrounded by a beautiful radiant light, a light filled with love, peace, and healing." This visualization is the vehicle for intention. Rather than striving or forcing, you hold the image gently and allow the breath to do the work.

The affirmation—"May you be healed, may you be at peace, may you feel loved"—is repeated silently, anchoring the visualization with words. This three-part blessing covers the primary dimensions of healing: physical restoration, emotional equilibrium, and the basic human need to feel held by love. By repeating this phrase with each breath cycle, you create a rhythm that prevents the mind from wandering and deepens the energetic intention. Collins emphasizes: "Continue to visualize this light enveloping them, soothing and restoring them in every way that they need." The meditation trusts that healing takes many forms and unfolds according to what the recipient actually requires, not what you think they need.

Why Is Receiving Healing as Important as Sending It?

The second half of the meditation pivots to receiving. After guiding you through the act of sending healing outward, Collins instructs: "Now begin to imagine that warm glowing light from the universe flowing into your heart space, receiving healing energy for yourself." This shift is not self-indulgence—it is fundamental to sustainable practice. Many empaths and healers struggle with depletion because they habitually give without receiving, as if compassion were a one-way current.

The receiving phase uses similar visualization and affirmation, but with the focus turned inward. You invite the light into your body and allow it to "fill you with love, strength, and peace." Then comes a key instruction: "Feel this light dissolving any tension, pain, or worry. With each exhale, let go of anything that no longer serves you." Healing is not merely an additive process—bringing in light—but also a subtractive one: releasing what is stuck, heavy, or old. The affirmation shifts to first person: "I am worthy of healing, I am whole, I am at peace." This statement counters a deep cultural conditioning that tells many people, especially caregivers, that they do not deserve the very restoration they freely offer others.

What Is the Role of Grounding and Root Energy?

Before any sending or receiving occurs, the meditation establishes grounding. Collins instructs you to bring awareness to "the base of your spine or the soles of your feet" and to "imagine roots extending down from that space into the earth, reaching deep down all the way to the molten lava core." This imagery serves multiple purposes. It stabilizes the nervous system, anchors you in the present moment, and creates a circuit through which energy can flow. Without grounding, healing work can feel flighty or destabilizing; with it, you remain resourced and centered.

The descent to the earth's molten core is not arbitrary. It suggests that healing energy is not ethereal or fragile—it is as vast and powerful as the planet itself. You are tapping into that stability. This grounding also prevents a common misconception about distance healing: that it is purely mental or that you must somehow leave your body to send energy elsewhere. By staying rooted, you send from presence, not from dissociation.

The Heart Center: Source of Healing Light

Once grounded, attention moves to the heart center. Collins guides: "Imagine a warm glowing light there. This is your source of love and healing energy." From this center, "with each breath, feel this light grow brighter and stronger until it fills your entire body and beyond." The heart is not mystical in this context—it is the energetic and emotional center recognized across traditions, the seat of compassion and connection. By meditating on this light growing and expanding, you are training your awareness and shifting your state of consciousness toward openness and love.

This expansion is gradual. The light begins localized in the heart, then fills the entire body, and finally extends beyond you into the world. This progression—from localized to embodied to universal—mirrors the journey of the meditation itself: from individual breath and heartbeat to connection with another, to recognition of universal healing energy.

How Does Language Shape the Practice?

The specific affirmations chosen in this meditation are worth noticing. "May you be healed" acknowledges that healing is not something you do to someone, but something you wish for them and help facilitate. "May you be at peace" addresses emotional and spiritual dimensions beyond the physical. "May you feel loved" names what many people lack most—the felt sense of being held by care. These phrases are gentle, repeatable, and free of the pressure to achieve a specific outcome.

Similarly, in the receiving phase, "I am worthy of healing" confronts a core wound for many practitioners. It is not "I will become worthy" or "I should be worthy"—it asserts worthiness as an existing fact, deserving to be recognized and honored now.

Integration and Trust

As the meditation closes, Collins brings you back to body awareness. She invites you to feel your physical body by "wiggling your fingers and toes" and to "place your hands over your heart, feeling your heartbeat." This return to sensation anchors the experience in the body and creates a bridge between the subtle, energetic work and everyday life. She then offers a crucial closing instruction: "Know that the healing energy you've sent and received today will continue to flow long after this meditation. Trust in its power and in the intention that you've set."

This trust is essential. Distance healing does not require you to monitor outcomes or to know exactly how the energy will manifest. You set an intention, you create the energetic conditions through meditation, and you release attachment to results. This letting-go is paradoxically what makes the practice powerful—it frees the energy from the constraints of ego and doubt.

Who Benefits From This Practice?

Distance healing meditation serves different purposes depending on the practitioner's needs. For reiki practitioners and energy workers, it offers a structured way to send healing remotely and to prevent energetic depletion by receiving as well as giving. For empaths—those naturally attuned to others' emotional and energetic states—it provides a contained practice space where empathic sensitivity can be channeled intentionally rather than left reactive.

For anyone seeking peace and balance, the practice offers benefits that extend beyond the healing energy itself. The grounding, the breath-work, the sustained visualization, and the repeated affirmations all calm the nervous system and quiet the thinking mind. Even if the idea of "sending energy" feels abstract, the meditation is a legitimate stress-reduction and self-compassion practice simply by virtue of its structure and slowness.

Where to go from here

If this meditation resonates with you, consider establishing it as a regular practice. Distance healing deepens with repetition—your visualization becomes clearer, your sense of connection strengthens, and your trust in the process grows. You might practice daily, or you might return to it specifically when someone you care about is struggling. Experiment with whether you resonate more with sending healing to others, receiving for yourself, or moving fluidly between the two.

Beyond the meditation itself, you can explore the broader landscape of energy healing traditions, from reiki to qigong to heart-centered prayer. Each offers its own vocabulary and techniques, but they all rest on a shared recognition: that love is not bound by distance, and that our consciousness and intention matter. The practice of distance healing meditation is, at its core, a practice of remembering that connection—and of learning to direct it consciously toward healing and peace.

The practice operates on the principle that healing intention and energy are not limited by physical distance. By grounding yourself, visualizing the person in light, and directing your breath and affirmation toward them, you create an energetic link. The meditation trusts that consciousness and love transcend proximity—you're not sending something physical, but rather directing intention and compassionate energy through visualization and focused awareness.
Yes. Distance healing is not dependent on the recipient's conscious participation or knowledge. You can send healing energy to anyone—a loved one, a difficult situation, even a past version of yourself. The person does not need to 'believe' in it or be aware it's happening; the practice works by directing your own intention and opening yourself as a channel for universal healing energy.
Sending involves visualizing someone else surrounded by healing light and repeating affirmations for their peace and wellness. Receiving involves opening yourself to that same universal healing energy, visualizing it flowing into your own heart and body, and affirming your own worthiness of healing. Both are essential—sending without receiving leads to depletion, while receiving without sending keeps you isolated from the healing power of generosity.
They are related but not identical. Reiki is a specific energy healing practice with formal training, attunement, and hand positions. Distance healing meditation is a broader contemplative practice accessible to anyone, requiring no training or attunement. However, reiki practitioners often use visualizations and intentions similar to those in this meditation, and many find this practice complements their reiki work.
Results may be subtle or take time to manifest. You might notice shifts in your own peace and clarity after practice, or the person you're sending to might report unexpected improvements. The meditation teaches you to trust the process and release attachment to specific outcomes—that letting-go itself is part of what allows the energy to work. Focus on the intention and the practice; trust in its power.
Absolutely. The second half of this meditation is devoted entirely to receiving healing for yourself. You can practice the full meditation and spend equal time on both sending and receiving, or you can focus exclusively on self-healing by skipping the sending portion and going directly to the receiving affirmations and visualizations.
Wandering is completely normal and not a failure. Each time you notice your mind has drifted, simply return your attention gently to the visualization, the breath, or the affirmation without judgment. The repeated affirmations in this meditation—"May you be healed" or "I am worthy of healing"—serve as anchors that naturally draw your attention back, making it easier to stay focused than in many other meditation practices.
