Jardim de Paz : Garden of Peace by Wah!: A Listening Guide

Jardim de Paz : Garden of Peace is a four-track release that arrived on January 26, 2024. It is a short record, and it asks to be heard as a single sitting.

Where It Sits in Wah!'s Arc

Wah! has been in the music industry for roughly thirty years. She says she was the first woman to bring kirtan, the call-and-response chanting of India, to the West in the 1990s, and that claim is her own account rather than something independently documented. Since 1997 she has also played bass guitar with her joyful rock band at yoga festivals and centers across the U.S.

This release follows Prabhuji, the sprawling twenty-track album from December 2023, by only a few weeks. After that long format, a four-track release feels like a deliberate exhale. It comes before the Ma Song remix by Atom Smith in 2025 and the full album It's Friday Night. The title's pairing of Portuguese and English suggests an offering made for a wider circle of listeners. The materials I have do not say who inspired it, so I won't guess.

Sonic Character

I don't have a track-by-track account of the production, so this section relies on what is documented about Wah!'s working sound. Her foundation is Sanskrit mantra sung over harmonium, with her own voice carrying the melody and the call-and-response shape of kirtan. In her online kirtan concerts she adds Ableton Live, which gives the music a warmer, more produced surface than unamplified room singing.

Her pacing varies by project. Some of her work is mid-tempo, some is slow and spacious, and some is built for dance. A short release called a "garden of peace" suggests the gentler end of that range, but I'd treat that as an expectation to test rather than a fact. Listeners used to strict traditional kirtan should expect studio polish. Those who like repetition and devotional sincerity will feel at home.

Tracks and What to Listen For

The facts available to me confirm that the release has four tracks but do not list their titles, so I won't name them. Here is how I'd approach each one anyway:

  • The opening track. Notice how long it takes to settle. In kirtan the first minutes teach you the call, and the response only becomes natural once you have heard it a few times.
  • Whichever track leans most on voice and harmonium. Listen for where her vocal sits against the drone and how much space she leaves between phrases. That gap is where the peace in the title can land.
  • Any moment where the arrangement thickens. Wah! comes from a rock band background, and a sense of pulse can enter even the quietest chant. It is part of what makes her work distinctive.
  • The closing track. On a four-track record, the last piece carries the weight of the whole sequence. Notice whether it dissolves or resolves.

If you stream it, the track list is on the Spotify page, and you can map these notes onto the actual titles.

Place in the Tradition

Wah!'s work belongs to bhakti, the devotional path in which sung names of the divine carry the practice, and kirtan is her specific form. The available data does not name a teacher or line of succession, so I won't assign one. What can be said is that her Sanskrit mantras sit within a devotional lineage, while her yoga-teaching frame and sound-healing vocabulary extend it into the wellness world. Some purists of Indian kirtan read that extension as a departure from older forms. Her recent catalog includes a single, Prano Devi Saraswati, that invokes a goddess by name, which shows the devotional thread running through the same period as this release.

This is also not a pure ambient record. It borrows ambient's patience, but a chant has words and a devotional purpose, and that sets it apart from background sound.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This release suits someone who already uses chant or yoga as a way to decompress. It also suits someone who wants an entry into mantra without committing to a long record. At four tracks, it asks little time of a newcomer. The fans who made a "Less Stress More Wah!" bumper sticker describe the emotional register well: warm, personal, and aimed at relief.

It lands hardest in a transitional moment, such as the end of a demanding week, a restless evening, or a stretch when you need a simple practice to anchor you. It is likely a poor fit for listeners who want a strictly traditional, unaccompanied kirtan experience. Those who want high-energy electronic music, or who are skeptical of wellness language, may also pass. Wah!'s catalog is measured and sincere rather than ironic.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Give it one uninterrupted sitting in the evening, at a low light level, with headphones. Four tracks makes the whole record a manageable ritual, so you can start and finish it without checking the clock.

Try this order of attention:

1. Listen once through without doing anything else. Let the harmonium and voice establish the room. 2. On a second pass, sing or hum the responses quietly. Kirtan is participatory, and the music changes once you join it. 3. End in silence for a minute or two before returning to your phone or your evening.

If you want the chant structure without the voice, her instrumental albums, such as Queen of Mantra (Instrumentals), make a useful companion, since the harmonium-led arrangements carry the mood alone.

This is a short, devotional, quietly produced record, best approached as a small practice rather than a playlist item.
