Spiritual Teacher
Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, known on his website as the Very Venerable 9th Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, was a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and the head of a worldwide family of Thrangu monasteries, retreat centres, schools and Dharma centers. His followers honour him as Kyabje, "Lord of Refuge", and he has since passed into parinirvana.
In 2004 he founded Thrangu Sekhar Retreat Centre, in the hills on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, just below a cave where the yogi Milarepa practised. It serves as the main retreat for the Thrangu Monastery lamas in Nepal who are chosen for the traditional three-year, three-fortnight retreat. He named it "Sekhar" after the tower Milarepa built during his hard training under Marpa Lotsawa. He visited regularly to give empowerments and advice to the retreatants.
The Thrangu community he led includes Thrangu Tashi Choling Monastery in Boudha, Kathmandu, and Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery at the pilgrimage site of Namo Buddha. At Thrangu Tashi Yangtse, more than two hundred novice and fully ordained monks take part in the annual summer rains retreat. The same family also runs schools, publishing houses, libraries and non-profit organizations. Through these, and with his blessing, the Thrangu team has delivered food relief and oxygen concentrators during the Covid-19 pandemic, and has helped families affected by floods and landslides in Nepal.
His reliquary stupa has been consecrated at Thrangu Tara Abbey. His website offers a weekly quotation from what it calls his vast ocean of wisdom.
Worth Knowing
Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, the 9th Khenchen of his lineage, was a paramount Tibetan Buddhist teacher honored by his students and monasteries as Kyabje—"Lord of Refuge"—their root guru in the dharma. His significance lies not only in his personal teachings and retreats but in the vast institutional legacy he established: multiple monasteries, retreat centers, schools, and dharma centers throughout Nepal that continue to function as living expressions of his lineage teachings. He founded Thrangu Sekhar Retreat Centre in 2004, which became the primary site for traditional three-year, three-fortnight silent retreats conducted by senior lamas in his community—a commitment of contemplative practice rooted in Tibetan Buddhist discipline. His students and monasteries, particularly Thrangu Tashi Choling in Boudha and Thrangu Tashi Yangtse at the pilgrimage site of Namo Buddha, remain centers of teaching and practice that draw seekers from around the world. Though Rinpoche has passed, his weekly words of wisdom continue to circulate among those studying his lineage, and a reliquary stupa consecrated in his honor at Thrangu Tara Abbey stands as a focal point for his community's devotion and remembrance.
