Where Shakti Gayatri Sits in Prashanti Paz's Arc

Shakti Gayatri arrived on February 4, 2026, as a single with one track. It is the most recent release in a catalog that began with the albums Inner Light (2017), Into the Heart (2019) and Beyond (2023), and that has been shaped along the way by singles: Om Ganapataye and Om Asatoma, Ganesha Sharanam, Mere Ram, Om Tare, and the heart songs Lokah Samastah, Coming Home and A New Day.

Seen against that arc, Shakti Gayatri reads as a return to the mantra practice at the center of her work. Paz is a devotional singer, musician, writer and meditation teacher, born in Patagonia, Argentina, and now based in The Hague. She left screenwriting for full-time sacred music and teaching in 2016. A single is not a full album statement, but it shows an artist still moving through the mantra traditions rather than settling into one.

The Sonic Character

Her catalog is built on a clear alto voice, often described as luminous and soothing, paired with minimal accompaniment. The harmonium is her primary instrument, sometimes joined by sparse strings. The pacing follows the breath of chant practice, with no driving rhythm and room left between phrases for the syllables to resonate. The facts available to me do not list the specific instrumentation of this single, so treat the palette above as her established approach rather than a track-by-track credit. If you know her earlier work, expect the same restraint: voice first, support second, silence as part of the arrangement.

The mood is contemplative rather than celebratory. This is closer to chamber music for chanting than to a festival sing-along.

The One Track That Matters

A single with one track makes the guide simple: the title piece is the whole experience.

"Shakti Gayatri." The piece draws on the Gayatri mantra tradition, rooted in the Hindu Vedic tradition, one of the most ancient and widely respected mantras in Hindu practice. What makes it land is the pairing of that weight with Paz's delivery. Her voice prioritizes clarity of Sanskrit pronunciation and emotional steadiness, so the mantra is not buried under production. Listen for how the phrases are given space, and for how repetition does its work. The effect of chanting does not depend on understanding every word.

Its Place in the Tradition

Paz's foundation is Buddhist. Her bio describes how work on Seven Years in Tibet in 1997 brought her into daily contact with Tibetan monks, Rinpoches and scholars, and her verified biography notes more than two decades of training with Tibetan teachers. Yet her music is deliberately ecumenical. She grew up in an interfaith family, with a Jewish father and a Christian mother, and her repertoire moves across Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and shamanic mantras. Shakti Gayatri, a Hindu Vedic mantra, shows that range clearly.

The word kirtan is often attached to her work, but her approach differs from the call-and-response group singing of the tradition. Her presentations are solo, carefully arranged and introspective, closer to personal sadhana than communal gathering. Krishna Das has said of her, "I love Prashanti Paz's voice!", a sign of respect from within the kirtan world itself.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This single is best suited to listeners who already have, or want, a practice: people who sit in meditation, teach or take yoga classes, or keep a quiet evening ritual. It also suits someone at a moment of transition who wants a steady, unhurried voice rather than stimulation. Because the mantra is a long-respected one, it fits serious practice contexts.

It is less suited to those seeking high-energy group ritual, electronic-adjacent soundscapes, or background music. Her voice and the Sanskrit are the center, not a texture behind something else. And since this is a single, newcomers who want the fullest picture of her voice are better served by starting with Inner Light and returning to this release afterward.

A Close Listening Recommendation

Give it a quiet, uninterrupted window, ideally in the evening, with headphones or a good speaker in a still room. Listen once without doing anything else, simply following the voice and noticing the pauses between phrases. Then listen again as a practice, sitting and letting the repetition carry you, perhaps joining the mantra silently or aloud once it feels familiar. If you use an altar or a regular meditation space, play it there. Because the release is a single track, it fits neatly into a short sitting, and it rewards being returned to over several days rather than heard once and set aside.
