surya by Nirodha: A Listening Guide

Nirodha is the meditative music project of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid. The name is Sanskrit for cessation, the stilling of mental noise. surya, released on 11 March 2026 as a single-track release, sits in the wordless thread of his work, the one built for stillness rather than sung mantra.

Within his small catalogue, it occupies a middle position. Night Sanctuary, his album in progress, is native flute made for sleep. Chants from the Heart sets Sanskrit mantra to voice, harmonium and silence. surya pairs nylon-string classical guitar with tanpura. It is instrumental, but warmer and more immediately inviting than the flute pieces. Espada trained as a classical guitarist, and here that background is put to unusual use: the guitar is asked to hold still rather than perform.

The Sonic Character

Espada has said he chooses instruments because each can hold a single tone without demanding attention. That principle governs surya. The tanpura supplies the drone, a steady bed of sustained strings that gives the ear something to rest on. The classical guitar sits on top of it, but not as a showcase. Expect no virtuosic finger-picking, no dense voicings, no melodic story to follow.

The pacing is slow, with long tones and plenty of space. Silence is treated as a compositional choice, not a gap to be filled. There is no lush reverb, no orchestration, no rhythmic pulse pushing you forward. Espada records alone, mostly at night, and asks what can be removed rather than added. The mood that results is warm, unhurried and quietly attentive. It is not drowsy in the way his sleep material is meant to be. It assumes you are awake.

The Track Worth Naming

surya is a single with one track, so there is only one piece to name, and it carries the album's title. Its strength is the pairing at its center. Guitar and tanpura are both plucked-string instruments, and together they create resonance that feels more like a room than a tune. The guitar's warmth gives the drone a human edge, while the drone keeps the guitar from drifting into melody for its own sake.

What makes it land is restraint. Each note seems to arrive only because it has to. Listeners who find pure drone austere may find that the guitar offers a gentle foothold, and listeners who find solo guitar too busy may find that the tanpura quiets it. The title is the Sanskrit word for the sun, a fitting image for music that is warm but never loud.

Its Place in the Tradition

Nirodha's work sits within the broader Hindu devotional tradition of kirtan, though Espada approaches it as a composer rather than a traditionalist scholar. surya is not kirtan itself. There is no call-and-response, no chant, no percussion. What it borrows from that world is the tanpura, the drone instrument of Indian classical music, and the idea of sound as a support for inner attention.

It also belongs to the ambient and meditation-music lineage, but on austere terms. Where much sleep and meditation music relies on textural washes, surya is closer to skeletal. It is not tied to a guru-disciple lineage, and the bio names none. Espada's guiding idea, that stillness is something you remember rather than something you achieve, frames the music as an invitation to recognition rather than a technique.

Who It Lands Hardest For

surya suits the listener who is already tired of stimulation. That might be someone coming off a loud, screen-heavy day who wants to arrive somewhere quieter, or someone beginning a meditation or yoga practice who finds pure flute too sparse and sung mantra too much of a commitment. It is also a good first step into Nirodha's catalogue for anyone who wants instrumental calm with some warmth in it.

It will land less well for those who need rhythm, forward motion or emotional catharsis. If your practice depends on a steady beat, the tone-holding approach may feel static. Listeners raised on polished pop or electronic production may find the acoustic intimacy underproduced. This is music for patient, comfortable-with-subtlety listening, not passive background noise.

How to Listen

Listen in the evening, ideally alone, with the lights low. Headphones help, since the pleasure here is in the small details: the decay of a plucked string, the faint shimmer of the drone, the silence between notes. Sit or lie down, and resist the urge to do anything else.

Let the first minute feel slow. That is the point. Rather than following the guitar, let your attention settle on the tanpura underneath and treat the guitar as something that passes through it. If your mind wanders, there is nothing to correct. Come back to the tone. By the end, the music may have asked very little of you, which is exactly what Espada built it to do.

AboutNirodha

Daniel Espada, as Nirodha, shapes native flute, classical guitar, harmonium and voice into quiet, single-tone music that helps restless minds settle into stillness.
