Miten

Miten is a British musician and songwriter, born Andy Desmond, who performs within yoga and alternative healing communities. With his musical partner Deva Premal, whom he met in India in 1990, he shares Indian Sanskrit mantras alongside his own songs as Deva Premal & Miten. Their channel describes them as Grammy-nominated chant artists who share music, mantras and meditations.

Before the mantras, Miten had a long career as a folk and rock songwriter. In the late 1960s he founded the duo Gothic Horizon with Richard Garrett, and the pair released two albums on UK Argo. He began performing solo in 1973 and joined the Konk Records roster, where his 1975 album Living on a Shoestring featured members of The Kinks. An eponymous album followed on Ariola in 1976, and he went on to open for artists including Fleetwood Mac and Ry Cooder.

In 1980 he was initiated into sannyasa by the Indian mystic Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and given the Sanskrit name Prabhu Miten, meaning "Friend of God". He spent time at the ashram in Pune, where he recorded the album In Wonder. Their version of the Gayatri Mantra was covered by Cher on her 2002 Farewell Tour album.

Alongside their recordings, the duo's own site gathers a mantra book and a book titled In the Garden of the Mystic. It also lists a pilgrimage book, No Water No Moon, a Gayatri Fund for Nepal, a mantra course and an online Gayatri Sangha community.
