The Single Best Entry Point: The Michelle Chalfant Show

Start with an episode of her podcast, The Michelle Chalfant Show. It is free, ongoing, and available on Spotify and other podcast platforms, so you can hear her voice, pacing and core ideas without spending anything or committing to a program. Pick an episode on boundary-setting, triggers, codependency or nervous system regulation. These are the topics that tend to bring people into her work, and they show quickly whether her style suits you.

If you would rather read than listen, her book The Adult Chair is the other legitimate starting point. But the podcast lets you test the fit first.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. The Adult Chair, the book. This is her foundational text on the model she created. It teaches you to identify the "parts" within you: the adult self, capable of clarity, response and boundaries, and the younger, reactive parts shaped by family history. It gives language and exercises for noticing when a younger part has "taken the chair," and for moving back into adult awareness.

2. A guided meditation. Her meditations are available through her website and her YouTube channel. They are designed around nervous system regulation, stress release and reconnecting with yourself. Her recorded voice is calm and clear, with deliberate pacing that leaves room to sit with your own responses.

3. Her online courses. If the framework resonates, her self-paced courses offer a structured way to go deeper. A coach certification program exists for those who want to work with the model at depth, but that is a later step, not a beginner's one. Her website, michellechalfant.com, is the hub for all of it.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect directness and humor rather than abstract spirituality. Michelle is a therapist and holistic life coach with over 25 years of experience, and she speaks from lived experience: she describes growing up in a loving but dysfunctional family marked by addiction and codependency, and struggling privately with depression and anxiety. She does not pretend that healing is frictionless.

You will hear practical psychological vocabulary: parts, triggers, inner child, reacting versus responding. Nothing is left unexplained, so beginners can follow, though the material has enough depth for people already familiar with therapy or somatic work. Meditation here is framed less as transcendence and more as a way to meet yourself with compassion and clarity.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

Expecting a guru. She positions herself as someone helping you uncover your own inner wisdom, not imposing hers. The message is that the teacher is not the healer; you are. Some people find that refreshing, others demanding.

Expecting a single tradition. Her work is not rooted in one lineage. It draws on counseling, energy medicine, NLP, EFT, PSYCH-K, chakra balancing, meditation and yoga, woven together deliberately.

Expecting a quick fix. The framework asks you to do the work of discovering your own answers. If you want someone to tell you what to do, it will frustrate you.

Treating it as crisis care. It is not a replacement for psychiatric or medical help if you are in acute crisis, with severe untreated depression, active addiction or dissociative episodes.

Assuming "parts" means you are fractured. The language of parts is a practical tool for seeing what drives your behavior. If your own tradition views the self as a unified soul, the wording may feel odd, though many find it useful in practice.

When This Work Lands Hardest

It tends to land hardest when you recognize patterns you keep repeating: people-pleasing, difficulty saying no without guilt, over-reacting to certain triggers, or relationships where you abandon your own needs. It also suits people who grew up around addiction, codependency or unclear boundaries, and those who have tried meditation but find they are too reactive or dysregulated to settle. Her teaching holds that emotional freedom and a regulated nervous system are prerequisites for genuine spiritual practice, so it can be a good fit if you feel stuck, disconnected or running on old wounds. It also works well alongside therapy you are already doing.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Listen to one podcast episode on a topic that matches your current struggle, such as boundaries or triggers. Note what stirs in you.

Day 2: Do a guided meditation from her website or YouTube channel. Afterward, write a few lines about what you noticed in your body.

Day 3: Begin reading The Adult Chair. Focus on the core idea: an adult part of you can respond consciously, while younger parts react from old wounds.

Day 4: Spend the day watching for a trigger. When it happens, pause and ask which part of you is responding. You are only noticing, not fixing.

Day 5: Continue the book and try one of its exercises for identifying an inner voice.

Day 6: Listen to a second podcast episode, this time on codependency or nervous system regulation, and repeat the guided meditation.

Day 7: Review your notes. Decide whether the framework fits you. If it does, look at her online courses on michellechalfant.com. If not, you have lost nothing but a week and some listening time.
