Author · Libertyville, Illinois, USA
Julia Cameron is an American teacher, author, artist, poet, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, composer and journalist, best known for The Artist's Way. The book began with Julia sharing her ideas with a few artists in her living room. It has since sold over five million copies, and she has taught her creativity tools in lectures and workshops around the world. Her official YouTube channel describes her as the author of fifty books.
Her central conviction, as Wikipedia puts it, is that creativity is an authentic spiritual path. Her core practices are Morning Pages, Artist Dates, walks, and writing for guidance. She teaches them as a twelve-week process, and she believes creative recovery works best as a nonhierarchical, peer-run, collective process. There are no accredited Artist's Way teachers, and anyone may start a group using the book.
Her other work includes The Right to Write, The Listening Path, Faith and Will, and Prayers from a Nonbeliever. She has also written fiction, including the thriller The Dark Room, as well as plays, musicals, poetry and screenplays. She has taught at The Smithsonian, Esalen, the Omega Institute and the New York Open Center, and she was writer in residence for film at Northwestern University.
Julia lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her video courses were filmed in her living room there, drawing on decades of teaching and a long writing life.
