The Music of Jim Gelcer: Sound, Sacred Texture, and Lineage

The Sound

Jim Gelcer sings Sanskrit kirtan in a warm, precise alto that stays in the mid-register. He does not reach for vocal display. The aim is a clearly pronounced text and an unforced sincerity. Underneath, the harmonium supplies the drone and the basic color, as it does in most kirtan. What sets his records apart is what moves around it: jazz-influenced chord voicings, harmonic turns a listener may not expect from a mantra, and room for live improvisation on drums or keyboards.

Tempo tends to be deliberate. Recent work, including the album Quiet Expanse (July 2025) and singles such as "Healing" and "Letting Go," moves at a meditation pace. He will hold a single mantra or phrase for minutes without ornamenting it. The texture is closer to chamber music than to a festival stage. It is intimate and conversational, with little to prop it up: no stadium-rock drums, no synth swells, no call-and-response built to whip a crowd up.

The Tradition

Gelcer's bio and verified sources place him in the Sivananda Yoga lineage, founded by Swami Sivananda. He studied Sivananda Yoga, and kirtan came through ashram practice. Invited to chant in the temple at the Sivananda Ashram in the Laurentian Mountains, he became committed to the form. He completed yoga teacher training at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas in 2006 and began leading kirtan soon afterward. That framework treats devotion as one pillar alongside asana, pranayama and meditation, which helps explain why his chanting feels like practice rather than entertainment.

He is also open about what else is in the mix. The bio describes his work as blending traditional kirtan with jazz, R&B and rock, and he does not present the result as a pure or rediscovered tradition.

The Signature Contribution

The contribution is his jazz foundation. Before kirtan, Gelcer was a professional drummer, singer, composer and producer. He studied drums, vibraphone, arranging and improvisation at the Eastman School of Music in 1980, then jazz at York University in 1984. He also composed for film and television, including CBC's The Journal. That background shows in arrangements that have compositional integrity rather than sounding bolted together. It also shows in his improviser's instinct for space and silence, and in his willingness to let one phrase sit. Many pop-leaning kirtan artists avoid that kind of restraint. Yoga Chicago magazine called him "the perfect bhakti singer."

Collaborators

His circle comes mainly from Canadian session and jazz work. He has performed, recorded and toured with Lee Aaron and the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and has worked with Paul Hoffert, George Koller, Lorne Lofsky, Don Thompson and Guido Basso. On the kirtan side, Grammy-nominated producer Ben Leinbach worked on Bhakti Groove Machine (2013). Donald Quan, Hans Christian and David Vito Gregoli also appear among his collaborators. Working with experienced players rather than only yoga-teacher-singers gives the records their harmonic and dynamic sophistication. He treats kirtan as a form that benefits from ensemble arranging.

A First-Encounter Guide

Start with Bhagavan (2010), his debut kirtan album. It presents his core identity: Sanskrit chants sung clearly, often over live instrumentation, shaped by jazz but never overcomplicated. Bhakti Groove Machine is the natural second step, more polished, with deeper grooves. Cape Town to Kolkata (2019) takes its title from his South African birth and the Indian tradition he later embraced. Quiet Expanse shows where he is now, at ease with sparseness.

Some things may surprise a newcomer:

  • Restraint. If you expect ecstatic, escalating call-and-response, this will feel understated, even sparse.
  • Harmony. The chord movement under a simple mantra can be more adventurous than you would guess.
  • Language. The Sanskrit is central, not an ambient backdrop, and he is explicit about kirtan's meaning and tradition. It rewards listeners who engage with the words.
  • Topicality. Singles like "Mariupol" (2022), a response to the war in Ukraine, show him bringing current events into devotional song. Titles such as "Compassion," "Forgiveness" and "Resilience" extend that thread.

His wry side appears too, in a title like "Do Androids Dream of Savasana" (2021).

For a sense of his speaking voice and pacing, his daily yoga class on Insight Timer offers it without studio production.

Place in the Conscious-Music Landscape

Conscious music has room for the exuberant festival kirtan wallah, the classical Indian purist and the ambient-wellness producer. Gelcer sits between them. He is less ecstatic than the first, less instrument-pure than the second, and more textual and tradition-aware than the third. His closest peers are other musicians who came to kirtan with serious training and kept it. His distinction is that he is a jazz-schooled improviser who sings mantra with discipline and leaves silence in the arrangement.

That position means his music may not suit everyone. Listeners who want high-energy ecstasy, dense layering or purely instrumental yoga music will find it too spare. Those who want secularized wellness sound with no reference to Hindu philosophy will also look elsewhere. For listeners who want kirtan that is musically literate, unhurried and honest about its hybrid roots, he is a distinctive voice. He positions himself as a guide and companion rather than a guru. He teaches and leads retreats at Sivananda Bahamas and Kripalu, and from 2012 to 2017 he was musical director of Shri Fest in Blue Mountain, Ontario. The music reflects that same posture: it is meant for practice, and it leaves the listener room to join in.
