Street Fighter by Girish: A Listening Guide

Street Fighter arrived on November 1, 2022, as a five-track single release from Girish, a kirtan artist whose work lives mostly in rooms: chant camps, sacred choir circles, workshops, and the stretch of a yoga class where live music carries the practice. Listening to a record from someone whose real work happens in shared space is a particular exercise. The recording is a doorway, and the room it points toward is one where your voice is expected.

Where It Sits in Girish's Arc

Girish describes music and mantra as a path to the joy, healing and freedom that come from giving voice to what lives within us. His career has been built around that idea, and around the community as much as the leader. His catalog sits beside a wider body of work: multi-day chant camps, retreats built around chant, rhythm, breath and shared singing, Attuned Soundscapes tuned to a person's own singing bowls, and the essential oil blend Saraswati Muse. Within that, Street Fighter is a compact release of five tracks, a small, focused piece of a practice that is far larger than any one record. I can't tell you from the available facts how it relates to his other releases, so I'll leave that comparison to you. What the record does give you is a clear sample of his working method.

The Sonic Character

The foundation of kirtan is voice, harmonium and tabla, and Girish's sound is built on that trio. The harmonium, the hand-pumped keyboard of Indian devotional music, supplies the harmonic ground. The tabla sets a cyclical rhythm that pulls a listener toward the trance-like state repetition can produce. His voice is clear and grounded, without ornament or high-register showboating.

Pacing is deliberate and unhurried. Mantra phrases loop and evolve over many minutes, and the music does not build toward a dramatic climax. Newcomers are often surprised by this. The repetition is the point, a way of arriving somewhere beyond thought rather than being taken through a story. The mood is warm, steady and welcoming. Even on a recording, the call-and-response structure leaves gaps for you to fill. Treat those gaps as an invitation.

Tracks Worth Naming

I can't name individual tracks with confidence. The facts available to me confirm that the release has five tracks but not their titles, and I won't guess. The title track, Street Fighter, is the natural place to begin, since it shares its name with the release. Beyond that, the better approach is to listen for the same qualities across all five:

  • How the tabla enters. Notice how quickly the rhythm settles into its cycle and how it supports the voice without crowding it.
  • The first full repetition of a phrase. This is where the call-and-response logic becomes clear, even when you're alone with it.
  • Moments where the arrangement thins. Where voice and harmonium stand nearly alone, Girish's unaffected tone is most exposed and most effective.
  • Late repetitions. By the time a phrase has returned many times, its meaning has shifted from something you hear to something you feel.

Its Place in the Tradition

Girish works within kirtan, a living practice of Hindu devotional chanting built on call-and-response singing, rhythm and Sanskrit mantra. Kirtan is participatory by design and belongs to no single guru or sect. The bio names no specific teachers in his lineage, so I won't assign one. What can be said is that his approach aligns with contemporary kirtan leaders who bring the practice to yoga studios and retreats. His emphasis on tabla and rhythm gives the work a grounding in Indian classical musical structure, and that sets it apart from more pop-influenced or New Age mantra music. The distinctive part is his insistence that the group, which he calls the Sacred Choir, is the heartbeat of the practice. Every voice is welcome, and no experience is required.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This record suits listeners who already sing along, or want to. It will reach people who have sat in a kirtan circle and want to carry the feeling home, yoga practitioners looking for live-feeling music for practice, and newcomers curious about chant but hesitant to walk into a room of strangers. It is a good fit for a moment of transition or heaviness, when repetition can steady a restless mind.

It is not for everyone. Kirtan asks for presence and tolerance for repetition. If you want high-energy electronic music, instrumental fireworks, or secular wellness background sound, this will likely feel too devotional. It also isn't passive listening, and it doesn't work well as wallpaper.

How to Listen

Give it an unhurried evening, alone, with headphones or a quiet room. Play all five tracks in order without interruptions. Sit or lie down, and let the tabla's cycle settle you before you try to join in. Then answer the calls out loud, even quietly, even badly. That is the practice, and it is the invitation Girish extends to everyone.

If the recording moves you, the fuller experience is live. His website, girishmusic.com, lists workshops, retreats and appearances, including a scheduled date at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge on December 29, 2026.
