Musician · Philadelphia
David Newman is a sacred mantra artist, singer-songwriter, author and inspirational teacher whose music and teachings carry a message of peace and universal love. His songs blend original writing with ancient healing mantras, and he is known for bridging contemporary western music and meditative mantras. He is also known as Durga Das.
After graduating law school in 1992, he changed direction and opened a yoga center in his hometown of Philadelphia. The center, Yoga on Main, was one of the first of its kind and created a new awareness of yoga in his community. Soon afterward, David, a lifelong musician, discovered kirtan, an ancient form of healing chant music, and began bringing his musical gifts to the practice and sharing it with others.
His first album, Soul Freedom, was recorded in early 2003. A second album, Lotus Feet, followed two years later; it received critical acclaim and was featured on NPR's All Things Considered. His music spread quickly through the worldwide conscious community, and he signed with Nettwerk Records in 2008. Among his many recordings is Love is Awake, a #1 iTunes world music release made in collaboration with members of Paul Simon's band. He tours internationally and is a frequent headliner at yoga and music festivals and conferences. LA Yoga Magazine has called him "reminiscent of George Harrison, Dylan and Paul Simon when they are in soul mode."
David also teaches on loving unconditionally, both as a way of life and as a path to spiritual awakening. He tells his own story of awakening in The Timebound Traveler, a #1 Amazon best-seller released in 2014. Beyond his music and books, he offers private coaching and mentoring.
Service runs through his work. In 2011 he launched The Stay Strong Project, releasing two singles and videos with figures from the yoga and music community in partnership with Global Green USA, with 100% of proceeds supporting environmental causes. He composed Song for Nepal in 2015 to support the Seva Foundation's earthquake relief, and with the Call and Response Foundation he took part in the Love and Mantra Outreach Tour, bringing mantras and healing music to addiction recovery facilities, psychiatric centers, nursing homes and other institutions. He sees his life's work simply as "spreading the love."
Worth Knowing
David Newman, who also goes by the name Durga Das, is a mantra artist and singer-songwriter who has spent three decades bridging the gap between contemporary Western songwriting and the ancient healing practice of kirtan. After graduating law school and founding Yoga on Main, one of Philadelphia's first yoga centers in the early 1990s, Newman discovered kirtan and devoted his musical gifts to the practice, eventually becoming one of the most recognizable figures in sacred music. His work blends original compositions of peace and universal love with healing mantras, creating a sound that draws both longtime spiritual seekers and newcomers curious about mantra meditation. The Washington Post captured the effect of his concerts by writing that the volume knob "seemed to go from low-level joy to full-on bliss"—a testament to how his music opens people's nervous systems. Beyond performance, Newman has published The Timebound Traveler, a #1 Amazon bestseller, and directs the Love and Mantra Outreach Tour, bringing healing mantras to addiction recovery facilities, psychiatric centers, and nursing homes. What distinguishes him in a crowded sacred music field is his background as a serious musician who understands song structure and production, combined with authentic spiritual practice and a commitment to using his platform for social causes.
